Etheridge’s Epistle

Ego eimi

"This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased;

listen to him!" Matthew 17:7

I do not know who said it but it is true;

"We were given two ears but only one mouth, because listening is twice as hard as

talking."

Here is another version that goes like this;

"We were given two ears but only one mouth, because listening is twice as important

as talking."

How very true! But we need to be very careful. What do you listen to? What you listen to and allow into your mind, heart and soul becomes a power in your life that shapes

you. In our spiritual lives it is very important to listen to the voice of God.

I want to invite you on a journey of LISTENING. On the mount of transfiguration

we are told two important truths and given one commandment and invitation.

First we are told who Jesus is, this is my son. Second, we are told that God loves and is

pleased with Jesus. Then God issues a commandment and an invitation listen to him.

We are commanded and invited to listen to Jesus. For Lent this year let us listen to

Jesus tell us who he is through the ego eimi, the I am saying. Each Sunday we will

listen to a different I am saying. Sunday March 4 we will listen to Jesus proclaim, "I

am the bread of life.”

See you Sunday,

Bro. Bill

MARCH IS NATIONAL COLORECTAL CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

COLON CANCER FACT SHEET

Colon & rectal cancers are referred to as “colorectal cancer” and abbreviated “CRC”

About Colorectal Cancer:

• 2nd leading cause of cancer death among men & women combined

• 3rd most commonly diagnosed cancer

• 135,430 estimated new cases in 2017

• 50,260 estimated deaths in 2017

• 1 in 20 people will be diagnosed in their lifetimes

• 1 in 3 people are not up-to-date with screening

• 23 million people have not been screened

• 60% of deaths could be prevented with screening which is demonstrated to reduce new

CRC cases and deaths from CRC

Early-Onset (under 50) Incidence:

Data suggests that the incidence of colorectal cancer for those under 50 is on the rise and more young people are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

~10-11% of colon cancers and 18% of rectal cancers are diagnosed in individuals under the age of 50

~Up to 22% of colorectal cancer cases diagnosed before the age of 50 are associated hereditary cancer syndromes; additional cases are related to inflammatory bowel disease.

~Colorectal cancers in individuals under 50 are more likely associated with symptoms. It is very important to seek medical care for unexplained persistent rectal bleeding and other signs and symptoms.

Hereditary/Genetic Stats:

• People with a first-degree relative (parent, sibling or child) with colon cancer are between 2-3 times more likely to develop the cancer than those without a family history.

• 25% of people diagnosed with colorectal cancer have a family history.

Music Notes

Trussville First UMC abounds with talented folks! For most of us that is not a major revelation! What is amazing is how freely these talents are shared and used to spread the good news of God’s unconditional love to the world. Not all talents that I have seen shared at Trussville First UMC in the New Year have been musically related, but for this portion of the newsletter, those are the ones I want to highlight. The Joyful Noise Children’s Choir sing with such joy & excitement. Nothing stops them—not even the recently unearthed musical instruments! The Sunday Night Children’s Rotation presented a Music/Drama rotation as one of the three rotations. These kids love singing about and acting out stories of Jesus. Be sure to be at church on March 4th when the Joyful Noise Children’s Choir & the Sunday Night Children’s Rotation Kids become part of the worship team for the 8:30 and 11:00 am Sanctuary Services. You do not want to miss them sharing

their talents.

If you happen to be anywhere around the Handbell Room throughout the day and night on Wednesdays, you will hear the excited children in Melody Handchimes & Harmony Handchimes ringing hymns and choruses on the Handchimes and the very dedicated ringers in Melody Makers and Jubilant Ringers rehearsing for upcoming

Worship Services and the Central Alabama Handbell Festival.

The 2nd & 4th Thursday nights BRASS4HIM can be found filling the building with wonderful melodies and harmonies while working on music for the Worship Services here

and at other churches.

The Chancel Choir can be heard each week faithfully and skillfully rehearsing music of the faith to share each Sunday in both the 8:30/11:00 am Worship Services and other

special Worship Services throughout the year.

Russell Williams, Debbie Barton and Jim McKinney always make our hearts soar with their preludes, offertories, postludes and hymns. What a joy it is to have guest soloists like

Ruth Gregory, one of our youth, and Paul West share their piano and trombone talents!

All of this comes down to one thing—music at Trussville First UMC does not happen by accident. No indeed! It is an intentional offering from those who sing, ring or play instruments to make music to the glory of God and to share His amazing love with everyone. There is a place for you in the Music Ministry at Trussville First UMC. Talk to

Kelley about how and where you can share your talents.

Make a Joyful Noise Unto the Lord!!!

Kelley Clegg Neal, Interim Music Director

Jubilant Ringers are participating in the Central Alabama Handbell Festival 2018 at Pleasant Hill UMC in McCalla on March 2 & 3. This is their 8th time to attend. You are invited to come to the Closing Concert on March 3 at 3:00 pm at Pleasant Hill UMC. Around 150 ringers will be ringing the Closing Concert. The concert is free. Please invite your family and friends to come with you. For more information contact Kelley Neal at [email protected] or 256-738-3979 or go to cahandbell.com.

Easter Celebration

Sunrise Service 6:15 am

The first service of Easter will be a Service of Light. We will begin outside the Sanctuary with a greeting, the Easter scripture, and the lighting of the Paschal candle. Then we will light our own candles and proceed into the

dark sanctuary, celebrating the Resurrection of Christ our Lord. We will conclude the service with the celebration of Holy Communion. A fellowship breakfast of biscuit or sausage biscuit, juice and coffee will be

provided in the Fellowship Hall. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors.
