We began Sunday an emphasis on the Apostles’ Creed. We recite it frequently in worship. It is one of the historic creeds of The Church. Sometimes though it is helpful to consider what we say with more diligence. One way to do this is to sing it! Sunday we thus sang three hymns which refer to vital aspects of the Apostles’ Creed. Each week we’ll sing two hymns which expound another line or two of the creed. I trust that these familiar hymns will help us appreciate the truth that we sing what we believe and that as we sing we learn what we believe. Although The United Methodist Church is not a creedal church, we value the shared creeds of the Church. Members of The United Methodist Church do not have to profess any one creed; rather we hold the truths of faith to be contained in the Risen Jesus Christ, Lord and Savior, and in the Bible. We believe that there are various ways to express these truths. So, at times in worship, we recite the Nicene Creed which is a fuller creed expressing the universal faith of The Church. Sometimes we recite a creed constructed from Scripture or borrowed from our colleagues in Korea or Canada. Creeds express parts of the truths we hold vital; no creed can express all we know to be true. Let’s ponder the meaning of our joint expression with the holy catholic Church. What does it mean that we have so much in common with other Christians around the world and around town? How does what we say when we say, “I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. . .,” affect what we do on Monday morning and throughout the week? Being a faithful Christian means keeping the promises we make. Being a disciple means pondering how Jesus wants us to live daily. Is what we say on Sunday in worship as we recite the Apostles’ Creed together congruent with what we do? Are we living in the full power of the Holy Spirit and of Jesus Christ, serving the Eternal God through the holy catholic Church? Are we living our joy in the reality of forgiven sins and everlasting life? Let’s take this corporate faith declaration seriously. Let’s be who God intends us to be so that all may know the God who is and was and ever shall be! Shalom, Pastor Pam
