Christmas is a busy time in the church. This was particularly the case a few years ago when, on Christmas Eve, I got up very early and headed to the hospital to visit several members who would be spending their Christmas day in a hospital room. Truthfully, I was feeling a little sorry for myself because it was to be a very long day and would conclude much later when the last Christmas Eve communion service was completed. In my inner being, I longed for the Christmases when my children were small and lamented that we wouldn’t be together for Christmas this year. So, when my visits were complete, I decided to treat myself to a late breakfast at the local IHOP (International House of Pancakes). I planned to find a booth, have some coffee and –because it would be a capacity crowd for the evening services— look over my sermon notes. I asked for an out-of-the-way seat and tried to avoid conversations and give myself some time to think. When the server came to take my order, I did a double-take. She was huge! (No—I don’t mean it that way.) Actually, she was a very petite young woman who looked as though she could have played Mary in the Christmas pageant. She was, as the Bible says, “heavy with child!” I couldn’t help myself. When she brought the food out, I got up and helped her carry it to the table. I tried to get her to sit down and rest but she was too busy with other customers. All it took was a few questions and she began to tell me about her life. It didn’t take much prompting. Like so many in our world today, she was living paycheck to paycheck and there was no margin. She had no choice but to work right up to the very point of delivery. She hoped she’d be able to work a few more days as she really needed the money. When she presented the bill, I remembered that I had once—in college-- depended on tips from waiting tables for my own livelihood. I remembered how hard and how tiring that work had been. I remembered that the “Theotokos” (the “God-bearer” as Mary is known by our Catholic brothers and sisters) was a young woman of no social standing. I remembered that it was Christmas and by all quantifiable measures –whether I felt it or not—I was among the wealthiest people in the world. I left a tip. Well, maybe it was a bit more than a “tip”. I hope it made a difference in her day and helped ease her burden. Suddenly, my sadness over not seeing my own children lifted a bit and crafting the “perfect sermon” no longer seemed all that important. Over and over again, God keeps teaching me that if I pay close attention to the people God places in my path I won’t have time to engage in self-pity. When we kick off our Wednesday evening programming next Wednesday, August 16, we will have an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children. We are asking you to make plans to attend and enjoy a fun-filled evening of biblical trivia, fellowship and good food. Bring a check to pay for the meal and consider adding a “tip” above and beyond the cost of the meal. The excess we collect will be distributed between Crestview Elementary and Covington Integrated Arts Academy to help teachers provide needed school supplies for their classrooms. Come –and help celebrate the spirit of Christmas in August here at Covington FUMC! God bless, Dan

CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST?

She was, as the Bible says, “heavy with child!”

I couldn’t help myself.

Learn how to heal from the deep hurt of divorce and discover hope for your future. Four divorce recovery sessions will be held beginning Wednesday, August 30th from 6:00-7:30 in the GO Classroom (lower level of the Sanctuary building. No materials or registration fees needed. This group is open to anyone who has experienced the pain and trauma of divorce. Sessions will be led by Cindy Pease, a licensed Christian Counselor who holds a degree in counseling from the University of Memphis and is a professional member of the American Counselors Association and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Cindy believes that the gospel offers a hope and the promise of “new life” to all those who have known the deep pain of the dissolution of a marriage.

Adults - Conspiracy theories, mental illness, love stories, with a little violence thrown in….Sounds like a made for TV movie—right? Well, actually, would you believe an account of ancient Israel and God’s relationship with God’s people which is complicated by priest and king alike? If you join with us on Wednesday evenings, we’ll learn of Hannah-- a childless woman who believed she was forsaken by God—whose life is changed when she bears a son, Samuel. We’ll learn how the Israelites wanted a king for “all the wrong reasons.” We’ll see how God allowed that, in the person of Saul, who looked very much like a king but had some problems with obedience to God. Hear—now as an adult—the story of David the young shepherd and the Philistine Goliath. We’ll meet giants, soothsayers and other very curious folks. We’ll watch as that boy becomes King David (who didn’t look so much like a king) and was a very, very human king but became a “man after God’s own heart.” We’ll meet a “foolish and self-destructive” rich man whose name is Nabal and his wife, Abigail, who is both beautiful and brilliant. In the meantime, we’ll fight some

battles, a few wars, bring the ark back to Jerusalem (don’t touch!). David’s son, Absalom, mounts a revolution against his own father and will be left hanging in the branches of a tree. These ancient stories were often told by the Rabbis and finally (thank goodness!) written down for our benefit. In the end, these are stories of human struggle, the “messiness” of life and God’s persistent love. Taught by Pastor Dan. Location: Fellowship Hall Time: 6 -7 PM. A supplemental study guide available for $10. Sessions will be held for 10 weeks.

FALL PROGRAMS BEGIN AUGUST 23RD

Youth- Student Small Groups: Every Wednesday night high schoolers and middle schoolers meet together in core groups to grow deeper friendships, and develop their faith. The High School Groups meet from 5:30 to 7 pm, and the Middle School Group meets from 6 to 7. Small Groups are a time where as a teenager you can get together with like minded people your age, share about what’s going on in your life, pray for one and other, learn more about who you are in Christ, and have fun with some of the coolest youth alive! We have three groups, high school boys, high school girls, and middle school. The addresses to each groups is…

High School Boys: Mike Morrison’s House (1315 Walter St, Covington)

High School Girls: Susan Sampson’s House (4528 Highway 52 East, Covington)

Middle Schoolers: Christian Life Center @ FUMC (145 W Church Ave. Covington)

Children- An exciting adventure through the Bible, connecting kids of all ages with their

Creator. Through interactive lessons, children will walk through Exodus, journey with

Jesus like never before and grow closer to God by learning who He is. Each Wednesday,

children will have up-close-and-personal experiences to learn more about their Creator.
