I BELIEVE
Today we find
ourselves in the midst of
great need. We are in a
long dry spell, harvest-
ing corn which didn't
make and planting wheat
with little moisture. We
are a month and a half
from Election Day with
many difficult issues
facing our nation--high
unemployment, over-
whelming national debt,
ongoing debates about
health care and immigra-
tion, and now several of
our embassies are threat-
ened by angry mobs of
protestors. What can we
do? Is our faith of any
help in the face of the
magnitude of our needs?
What does
it mean? Jesus "rebuked
the wind, and said to the
sea, 'Peace! Be still!'
Then the wind ceased,
and there was a dead
calm." (Mark 4:35-41).
Those taking the
Christianity Explored
class heard last week
that the stopping of the
wind would not naturally
lead to the immediate
halt of the waves. Water
doesn't work like that.
There was plenty to
amaze the disciples in
the boat. It was all super-
natural. At Jesus' com-
mand, a full tilt storm
stopped on a dime. What
was threatening salty
fishermen, causing them
to fear for their lives,
was gone in an instant
moment. because Jesus
said so. Not only did the
wind quit,

but the energy within the
water, which would keep the waves
going long after the wind, vanished
precisely at that moment.
And how did the fishermen
disciples respond? Their awe of
Jesus was greater than their fear of
the storm. They asked one another,
"Who then is this, that even the
wind and the sea obey him?" (Mark
4:41). These disciples were one
step closer to believing.
When Jesus, Peter, James,
and John came down from the
Mount of Transfiguration, the other
disciples were struggling to cast a
demon from a boy (Mark 9:14-29).
The father told Jesus the boy's his-
tory with the affliction and asked
Jesus, "If you are able to do any-
thing, have pity on us and help us."
Jesus replied, "If you are able!--All
things can be done for the one who
believes." The father cried out, "I
believe; help my unbelief!" Jesus
rebuked the spirit and it came out
of the boy. When the disciples
asked Jesus why they were unsuc-
cessful in casting out the demon,
Jesus answered, "This kind can
come out only through prayer."
As Jesus prepared his disci-
ples for his departure, he told them,
“Very truly, I tell you, if you ask
anything of the Father in my name,
he will give it to you.” (John
16:23). Jesus wanted his disciples
to know, that just as he had helped
them while he was with them, so he
through prayer would help them
from heaven.
Belief is a conclusion drawn
based on the facts as we have per-
ceived them. Is Jesus the only Son
of God? Does God truly have su-
pernatural power, authority over all
creation, including even the affairs
of human history? Does God hear
and act on the prayers of those who
believe and align themselves with
His will?
There is prayer which is
uttered in desperation and without
much faith. Such prayers are more
like wishes than true prayers. And
then there are prayers spoken in
confident faith. The confidence is
not in the answer which will be
given, but in the authority of God
to answer. Such is the faith Jesus
meant when he said, “Truly I tell
you, if you say to this mountain,
‘Be taken up and thrown into the
sea,’ and if you do not doubt in
your heart, but believe that what
you say will come to pass, it will be
done for you.” (Mark 11:23). Such
belief is not only a conclusion that
God is God and that He is disposed
to answer the prayers of those who
believe in him, but it is the conclu-
sion that calls us into action. Make
no mistake, prayer is not doing lit-
tle or nothing, prayer is doing the
hardest and most important work.
So what can we do in the
face of our many great needs? We
can believe God is able and willing
to address these needs. We can ask
Him for help, not telling Him what
the answer must be, but asking Him
to act and do more than we imag-
ine. And we can keep asking Him
until the work is done.
Do you believe? Like the
boy’s father, I answer, “I believe,
Lord, help my unbelief.”

ANNUAL
CAKEWALK
During the UMW Bazaar on
Nov. 3rd the youth will be
having their annual cakewalk
to raise money for there ski
trip to Red River in March.
Any donations would be ap-
preciated! If you have any
questions you can call the
church office at
492-6850.
Preschool has been super busy! We started our study of colors,
numbers, letter, and shapes! We have eaten red, worn red, spelled red, and made
red ladybugs!! We have practiced ‘loud’ for letter L and have started our study of
fire safety for letter F. Our trip to the fire station is scheduled for October 9th. We
have also discovered many animals that come from eggs for letter E; and then
enjoyed peeling and eating them for snack!
I believe we have all adjusted to the school routine again! The students
seem to love bouncing through activities with me! We love to stay busy and have
fun! Our new technology room, the tech room, is a hit with the older students!
They love being challenged by the computers and the listening center is always
playing a story! The younger students are getting used to moving through all the
other centers. We will start the tech room soon. If you haven’t seen it yet, please
feel free to come down and look at it!
I have one spot available in the 3 year old morning class if you know
anybody who has a child interested in the challenging fun experience of pre-
school!!

PISTACHIO NUT SWIRL CAKE
1 pkg. yellow layer cake mix 1 pkg. Jello pistachio instant pudding
4 eggs 1 c. sour cream
1/2 c. oil 1/2 tsp. almond extract
1/2 c. sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. nuts
Combine 1 package yellow cake mix, 1 package Jello pistachio instant pudding, 4 eggs, 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup oil and 1/2 teaspoon almond extract in large mixer bowl; blend. Beat at medium speed of electric mixer for 2 minutes. (I add green food coloring to make the color brighter).
Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/2 cup finely chopped nuts. Put 1/3 of the batter into greased and floured 10 inch tube pan; sprinkle with half of the sugar mixture. Repeat layers and top with remaining batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes, or until center springs back when touched. Cool 15 minutes before removing from pan. Amy Edgar
