Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man.

Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

God Speaks Today/ Dios Habla Hoy


Today marks the beginning of an-other liturgical year. The tone of today’s readings casts us in the role of students learning solemn lessons. The reading from Isaiah sets the stage, calling us up a mountain to receive the Lord’s instruction. In this passage we study peace. Then Paul steps forth with sober admonitions. We have to wake up; the day is almost here. Live honorably in the light. Paul reminds us that we really do know the time in which we are living. Finally, Matthew presents Jesus the storyteller. Just imagine, Jesus tells us, what it was like in Noah’s time. He paints a vivid picture of ordinary people living ordinary lives and ignoring the warnings that Noah heeded. Totally unconcerned, they were destroyed. How will it be any different for us? No one knows when the Lord will come. But we have been warned. Perhaps we find such sobering scriptures unappealing and threatening. But within them there is promise. We are to live in the light with nothing to hide. We are to be ready.

What is Advent?

Advent is the season that begins the liturgical year. It consists of four Sundays starting with the Sunday closest to November 30th. The word "advent" is derived from the Latin adventus, which means "coming" or "arrival." In the societies of the Roman Empire, the word adventus referred to the arrival of a person of dignity and great power -- a king, emperor, or even one of the gods. For Christians, Advent is the time when the church patiently prepares for the coming of Jesus Christ. Advent is the first part of a larger liturgical season that includes Christmas and Epiphany and continues until the beginning of Lent. Even though Advent occurs in the month of December and is often considered as a prelude to Christmas, it is not simply about waiting for the birth of Christ. The Advent season focuses on Christ's threefold coming past, present, and future. First, we remember the Lord's humble first coming in Bethlehem two thousand years ago. Second, we give thanks for His present and continual coming to us through Word and Sacrament. Finally, we look forward with hope and longing to His second coming in glory on Judgment Day. The symbolism of the Advent wreath is beautiful. The wreath is made of various evergreens, signifying continuous life. Even these evergreens have a traditional meaning which can be adapted to our faith: Holly also has a special Christian symbolism: The prickly leaves remind us of the crown of thorns, and one English legend tells of how the cross was made of holly. The circle of the wreath, which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God, the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found in Christ. Any pine cones, nuts, or seedpods used to decorate the wreath also symbolize life and resurrection. All together, the wreath of evergreens depicts the immortality of our soul and the new, everlasting life promised to us through Christ, the eternal Word of the Father, who entered our world becoming true man and who was victorious over sin and death through His own passion, death, and resurrection. The four candles represent the four weeks of Advent. A tradition is that each week represents one thousand years, to sum to the 4,000 years from Adam and Eve until the Birth of the Savior. Three candles are purple and one is rose. The purple candles in particular symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices and goods works undertaken at this time. The rose candle is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete

Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass; Gaudete Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at the midpoint of Advent, when their preparation is now half over and they are close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to judge the living and the dead. The light again signifies Christ, the Light of the world. Some wreaths include a white candle placed in the middle of the wreath, which represents Christ and is lit on Christmas Eve. Another tradition is to replace the three purple and one rose candles with four white candles, which will be lit throughout Christmas Season.

Con el Adviento comienza el año eclesiástico en las Iglesias occidentales. Durante este tiempo los creyentes son exhortados a prepararse dignamente a celebrar el aniversario de la venida del Señor al mundo como la encarnación del Dios de amor, de manera que sus almas sean moradas adecuadas al

Redentor que viene a través de la Sagrada Comunión y de la gracia, y en consecuencia estén preparadas para su venida final como juez, en la muerte y en el fin del mundo. La corona de adviento se hace con follaje verde sobre el que se insertan cuatro velas. Tres velas son violeta, una es rosa. El primer domingo de adviento encendemos la primera vela y cada domingo de adviento encendemos una vela mas hasta llegar a la Navidad. La vela rosa corresponde al tercer domingo y representa el gozo. Mientras se encienden las velas se hace una oración, utilizando algún pasaje de la Biblia y se entonan cantos. Esto lo hacemos en las misas de adviento y también es recomendable hacerlo en casa, por ejemplo antes o después de la cena. Si no hay velas de esos colores aun se puede hacer la corona ya que lo mas importante es el significado: la luz que aumenta con la proximidad del nacimiento de Jesús quien es la Luz del Mundo. La corona se puede llevar a la iglesia para ser bendecida por el sacerdote. El círculo nos recuerda que Dios no tiene principio ni fin; es eterno.

The Angel Tree is designed to assist families in financial need to ensure that their children have a joyful Christmas. Each year, with your generosity,

we help provide over 100 children with Christmas presents. The Angel Tree will be in front of the crying room inside of the church. If you would

like to help simply choose an angel and bring a gift card to us by December 14th.

The distribution date will be Monday December 16th and Tuesday December 17th from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from

3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Christmas Art Contest

Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Miami, invite our kids to submit drawings with a Christmas theme. The goal is to promote mission among our children during the season of Advent. This local contest is part of a national event held by the Missionary Childhood Association. Entry form and guidelines were sent out in October. The Mission Office will receive all entries and determine local winners. Local winners will: - be featured at Christmas time in the archdiocesan website and in the Christmas edition of the Florida Catholic and La Voz Católica. - receive special recognition from the Mission Office. Then all entries will be submitted to the National Office of the Pontifical Missions, for participation in the national contest. National winners selected by the Pontifical Missions Society will be displayed at the Basilica of the National Shrine in Washington, D.C. during Advent 2013 and the feast of the Epiphany 2014.

Evangelio de la Semana Mateo 24:37-44

Hemos completado el círculo y hoy empezamos un nuevo año litúrgico. El tono de las lecturas de hoy nos pone en la posición del estudiante que aprende unas importantes lecciones. La lectura de Isaías prepara la escena, invitándonos a subir a la montaña para escuchar las instrucciones del Señor. En este pasaje estudiamos la paz. Luego Pablo nos presenta advertencias sombrías. Debemos estar alertas porque el día está a la puerta. Vivan honradamente en la luz. Pablo nos recuerda que sabemos en que tiempo vivimos. Finalmente, Mateo nos presenta a Jesús, el relator. Imagínense, nos dice Jesús, lo que era vivir en tiempos de Noé. Presenta una imagen muy realista de gente común viviendo vidas ordinarias e ignorando las advertencias que Noé escuchó. Totalmente despreocupados, fueron destruidos. ¿Podrá ser diferente para nosotros? Nadie sabe cuando vendrá el Señor. Pero nos advirtió. Tal vez pensemos que ese tipo de Escritura es desagradable y amenazante. Pero contiene promesas. Debemos vivir en la luz; con nada escondido. Debemos estar listos.

En aquel tiempo, dijo Jesús a sus discípulos: -«Cuando venga el Hijo del hombre, pasará como en tiempo de Noé. Antes del diluvio, la gente comía y bebía y se casaba, hasta el día en que Noé entró en el arca; y cuando menos lo esperaban llegó el diluvio y se los llevó a

todos; lo mismo sucederá cuando venga el Hijo del hombre: Dos hombres estarán en el campo: a uno se lo llevarán y a otro lo dejarán; dos mujeres estarán moliendo: a una se la llevarán y a otra la dejarán. Por tanto, estad en

vela, porque no sabéis qué día vendrá vuestro Señor. Comprended que si supiera el dueño de casa a qué hora de la noche viene el ladrón, estaría en vela y no dejarla abrir un boquete en su casa. Por eso, estad también vosotros preparados, porque a la hora que menos penséis viene el Hijo del hombre.»
