ON THE COVER...

The Kingdom Rock Vacation Bible School (VBS) team is preparing and almost ready for our VBS program happening June 3 - 7 from 9 am to noon. It's not too late to invite your neighbors or to bring your elementary age keiki. Our team of over 60 volunteers is dedicated to assist our keiki to learn how to stand strong with God. On VBS week our keiki

will experience Epic Bible Adventure stories, Sing & Play Rock Worship, The King's Kitchen Snacks, Imagination Station, Tournament Games, and Chadder's theatre. Even though we have closed our online registration, we will still accept walk-ins on the first day. Be sure to come early. Hope to see you there!

Your outpouring of love and special memories at my Retirement Party were precious to me! And I was truly overwhelmed by the program - the amazing ballerinas, Roz's special solo, my surprise guest, my friends on our Congregational Life and Women's Ministry

on stage, all the beautiful decorations and my gold butterfly necklace presented by Pastor Dan. I'm thankful to all of you who participated, contributed to and shared in my party. As I have been throughout my time here at First Prez, I've been blessed far beyond what I could have ever dreamed of. Love ~ Dee Dee

Abide With MePart 2 by Patti Marshall

You’ve probably discovered that “being” and abiding in Jesus without an agenda is not easy. It requires energy and effort. Here are a couple of suggestions:

Abide in short intervals of time initially (10 min, 15 min) and add more minutes to each session each week.

Abide by reading God’s word for reflection (one verse from Ps. 23) and not study.

Here are some do-able prayers for abiding:

Lord, have mercy on me. Ps. 86:3

Lord, impart Your thoughts to me. 1 Cor. 2:10; Is. 55:8

Lord, help me to take every thought captive to you. 2 Cor. 10:5

Lord, test and examine my ways. Lam 3:40; Jer. 17:10

OUT & ABOUT (FORMERLY RAA!)

When was the last time you visited the Honolulu Zoo at Kapiolani Park? Five years or longer? If you have children or grandchildren, perhaps your visit was more recent. But in any event, NOW’S the time to visit it again.

Join the Out and About ministry as it visits the Honolulu Zoo on Wednesday, June 26th, starting at 10 am.

The Honolulu Zoo is the ONLY zoo in the United States that originated from a king’s grant of royal lands to the people. In 1876, King David Kalakaua, then Monarch of Hawai’i, made lands of the Leahi Crown Holdings available “to the people of Hawai’i.”

In 1877, it was officially opened as Queen Kapiolani Park and developed using royal subsidies to display the King’s private bird collection and to feature a horseracing track. In 1914, the City of Honolulu assumed responsibility for the park and its first park director, Ben Hollinger, began collecting animals, beginning with a monkey, bear, and an African elephant “for the children of Hawai’i.” In 1946, 42.5 acres within the park was designated as the Honolulu Zoo.

Fast forward to 2013, the Zoo is now comprised of 220 acres of the park. Its current animal population includes 221 species of reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, and arachnids, for a total of

approximately 900 animals. With this large number of animals, the Zoo is maintained by about 73 full and part-time staff, as well as many volunteers. A day at the Zoo is never dull, and there are many programs and tours that people can participate in to see what goes on behind the scenes.

The Zoo's breeding program has been proven successful. They recently shipped a Sumatran Tiger to a zoo in France. If we’re lucky, we may get to see the three new lion cubs, born on Dec. 15, 2012 to Moxy, the lioness. There is so much to see, so we encourage you to stay as long as you want to.

This is truly a family event and we invite one and all to attend. Our tour begins at 10 am and is NOT docent-led. You may want to carpool as there is limited metered parking (cost is $1/hr.) or free parking at the Waikiki Shell. The entrance fee for kama’ainas is $8 for adults and $4 for children, 4-12, which can be paid at the Zoo. For those who are interested, you may bring your picnic lunch (coolers are allowed, but no alcoholic beverages) and enjoy your meal on the lawn as we take in the beauty of God’s creation.

So join us on Wednesday, June 26 at 10 am. Sign up in the Fellowship Hall on Sundays, June 16 and 23 after the 8 and 9:30 am services.

WOMEN'S MINISTRY

What a great time! Seventy six of us “Dared to Dream.” and for many us, it was our first time attending a First Prez Women’s Retreat. Wow!

“On one short weekend God worked through Julie Daubenspeck to evoke forgiveness and healing in my life. It was a milestone that drew me so much closer to the Lord.” That was the reaction from Claire Tanoue, one of the first-time attendees.

This year we stayed on home ground at Ko‘olau for the retreat. It was a pleasure to have our own Julie Daubenspeck as our speaker as she shared about her life and how God has worked in and through her. Trisha Kiyohara, Trisha Burlison, Judy Ensing, and Heidi Lum each led mini-sessions. Having Roz with her bright smile lead our singing was a delight as always.

In our packets, we each received a copy of The Dream Giver by Bruce Wilkinson. “Reading that little book helped me and resurrect and solidify my dream," said

During our relaxation time, many attended the stretching class led by Sissi Copeland, while others sat together and talked, or visited the Prayer Room, or walked the Prayer Labyrinth. A few of us took advantage of comfortable spaces for short naps.

We’re looking forward to seeing more women at the retreat next year. Aloha!

This June our church halls will be running over with children! It’s Vacation Bible School time. I hope your children and neighbors’ children are signed up. And it’s time to find that surfboard in the back of the garage and dust it off, 'cause surf’s up, dude!

Mitch D’Olier received one of three Queen Emma awards at the annual Queen Emma Ball fundraiser for his work in advancing public education in Hawaii. Thank you for your dedication in caring for Hawaii’s children, Mitch.

In May, Garrett Sullivan attended a peer group business meeting in Dublin and decided to make a two-week vacation out of it with wife, Janis Loo. They drove on the left side of the road on the Emerald Isle with another couple and encountered a God-incident in which Garrett connected with second cousins he had never met by talking to the locals in Bondurin, Ireland. Kissing the Blarney Stone and visiting castles and pubs were other highlights.

Christa Langdon, daughter of Adriene Langdon, was the recipient of an Alumnae Association Tuition Award at St. Andrew’s Priory School for academics and citizenship. Christa will be in the 7th grade next year.

Ryan Stanfield, son of Barbara Pretty and Bob Stanfield, was awarded the Outstanding Sophomore Award for the Theatre Department in May. Helping win this award was his acting prowess in such plays as “Urinetown, the Musical.” Ryan attends Loyola University in Chicago, where he has a double major of Theatre and Communication. This is the second year in a row he has won the outstanding student of his class for the Theatre Department.

Jeff Marshall, son of Hal and Patti

Marshall, is a Security Investigator in the Corporate Security Department of Bank of Hawaii. He recently gave a powerful presentation to the Out & About (formerly RAA) group regarding financial abuse. He shared ways they could protect themselves by being armed with knowledge about how to identify scams and fraud and avoid falling prey to financial predators and scam artists. Thank you, Jeff.

Our women’s retreat was a special event this year. There was something for everyone. There was lots of learning, listening, singing, laughing, and talking going on. Some were thrilled with the extended down time, like Elaine Olelo Masters who said she really appreciated the “girlfriend time.” She lives alone and writes books, so extended conversations with other gals are a rare treat. Think about going to the women's retreat next year. Who knows—you may make a friend.

Paige Jimenez, daughter of Julie Sparks, participated in her first pageant, the Hawaii’s Outstanding Teen pageant. It is affiliated with the Miss America and Miss Hawaii scholarship pageants. The girls are scored on grades, interviewing skills, talent and fitness. Paige was awarded 4th runner-up. Her mom was pleased because all of the other girls had been in pageants previously. Paige attends Kaiser High School and will be in 10th grade next year.

Well, everyone is getting in on this "All the Good Things" theme. Even Salt Lake City has a news channel named "Good Things Utah" sharing good things in their local area. And let me tell you, it’s gotta be good 'cause they shared a recipe for spam musubi. I kid you not! If Utah can do it, I know First Prez can too. I trust you, O Lord, the Creator of the Universe

But do I trust You with this?It has been years but no doctor or

modern medicine has helped.In fact it is getting worse.Why won’t you take this pain from me?Why must I suffer?Is there a lesson to be learned, or is this a

trial I must face?Let me learn quickly.A cynic I have been with the stories of

healing prayer,But I’ll try this time for hands to be laid.The mind resists but my body presses

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY

On April 24-26, Children’s Ministry leaders Karen Makishima, Sheri Wong, Karen Kaisan, and I joined thousands of others from around the globe to attend the Orange Conference in Atlanta, GA.

At the conference, leaders of the “Orange” philosophy of family ministry asked us to “imagine the impact when church and family collides.” The idea of being orange is combining the Light of the World and the Church (yellow), and the heart of the home (red), to create the most impact on the lives of our youth (orange). The conference was so rich in creative ideas, insights, and training. It strengthened and encouraged us through the various general sessions, break-out sessions, workshops, and resources.

Ko‘olau Kids uses the Orange Curriculum every Sunday morning. We offer a full program in all three services for children ages three months to 5th grade. We are sold-out to the belief that as we partner with families, God will move in our church body. Our prayers are for our children, the next generation of the Church —that the Holy Spirit would move in them and that they will know Christ at an early age!

SUMMER INTERNS ON-BOARDWe have an amazing crew of Summer

Interns who began ministry on May 28th and will be with us through the summer. All the college summer interns are from First Prez. They are ready to pour themselves back into the ministry that has meant so much to them. Please keep them in your prayers as they minister among our children and youth this summer through both big and small events. The interns desire to share the love in Jesus in very tangible ways into the lives of our kids. They are:

SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL GATHERINGThe summer brings many

opportunities and one of the best is moving the High School Gathering to Drew and Cathy’s house. Starting Wednesday, June 12th the barbeque is going to be up and running full tilt. Everyone gathers at 6:30 pm and brings a potluck item to add to the table. Burgers, hotdogs, and drinks are provided. After dinner we have some great times of worship and sharing together. They are the sweetest Wednesday nights of the summer. The time goes from 6:30-9 pm. Meet at Drew and Cathy’s at 470 Kaha St, Kailua. Bring a friend, bring some food, bring your appetite!

New Stephen Ministers

What a blessing our new Stephen Ministers have been for those privileged to be with them during their training classes. They all trusted that God would make space for each of them to go through the 50 hours of training time to become Stephen Ministers. Please join us in applauding them as they are presented to the FPC family at a Sunday worship service in the near future. God bless each of them as they begin their ministry!
