DISCOVER

Welcome to the first issue of FIRST PRESS.A publication promoting all of the programming of First PresbyterianChurch, Davenport, Iowa.

Discover is a verb, an action word, meaning to see, get knowledge of, learn of, find, or find out; gain sight orknowledge of (something previously unseen or unknown).

So how do we set forth to Discover atFPC? First, let’s consider that it is averb, an action. That means we need tobe intentional about setting time aside to do discovery work. We can be presentin worship, study groups, communityservice, teaching, fellowship, leadership, and prayer. We can be attentive to others, showing care and concern by listening to understand, and not simplylistening to respond.

We can embrace our denomination andhistoric Reformed tradition. Presbyteriansunderstand the Bible to be the essentialrule of faith and practice, very much asother Protestants do. We believe thatGod exists in the trinity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; that Christis the Son of God, the Revealer of God,and the Savior of humanity; and that thechurch is the Body of Christ in the world.

We can continue to learn and explorefaith through education. Presbyteriansbelieve that the Holy Spirit constantlyenlightens truth, and thus they admit different understandings of the historicalconfessions of faith. Ultimately, everyPresbyterian must find a personal understanding of faith through study,

contemplation, and worship. A very important principle is that “God alone isLord of the conscience.”

In this first issue of the First Press, you’llfind opportunities and paths to navigate, but leave your mind open to what morecan be discovered on your journey.

Help others Discover FPC by invitingthem to church, programs, and activities. If you find the information in this issueof FIRST PRESS interesting and valuable to share, please take a copy of it (located on the Welcome Desk) andgive one to your friends and neighbors. On Sundays, in February we’ll have“Discover Cards” available for you totake and pass along to your friends andneighbors, inviting them to visit FirstPresbyterian Church.

As you navigate through these pages andreflect on your relationship with God,may you consider a path that allows youto travel in grace and full of Discovery.

MusikgartenOur Musikgarten program is half-way through its third year at FPC already! And what an excitingtime it has been! We’ve been joined on a weekly basis by our youngest children (newborns to 3-year-olds), their parents and even some of their grandparents to sing, dance and play together.Starting with the sacred-based curriculum, “My God, My Family and Me!”, we have immersed our children in movement and music activities that are perfect for their physical and language development. And along the way, other areas of development — creativity, family bonding, self-esteem, confidence, emotional development — have also been growing.

Musikgarten's philosophy is steeped in this understanding: movement and music activitiesare perfect for child development; music immerses the child in language; evokesmovement; stimulates the brain; and fosters physical coordination -- all in a groupsetting that builds a God-centered, musical community -- a truly holistic experience.

We now have three age-specific classes available. Our Musikgarten Babies class, ledby Kathy Middleton, is for parents and newborns to 18-month-old children. Each classfeatures bouncing and rocking songs, wiggle and peek-a-boo games, and fun age-specific activities. This class meets in the Toddler room on third floor of the education wing.

Musikgarten Toddlers, led by Adam Page, is for parents and toddlers up to age 3. Each lesson features movement activities for coordination, body awareness and control, exploration of space, and instruments such as rhythm sticks, jingles and rattles. This class meets in the Parlor.

Our Musikgarten for 3-year-olds class meets in our newly refurbished Angels Room 307 on thirdfloor of the education wing and is led by Anne Page. Parents and their 3-year-olds participate together in focused listening, musical games, playing instruments, moving and singing.

All classes meet from 10:15-10:45 AM and follow the Sunday School schedule. If you have questionsor would like more information, please contact Kathy Middleton ([email protected] or 563-505-0471).

Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 12:30 to 2:30 PM

Lardner Balcony at the Putman Museum1717 W 12th St, Davenport, IA 52804

Guest Speaker is Minner Serovy from the national Presbyterian Foundation

A light brunch will be served

Throughout the Church’s history, in both good and difficult times, faithful members have financiallysupported the Church’s work. This has enabled the Church to share God’s love for more than 175 years. But long-term stability continues to be an issue. Each year during the annual Stewardship Campaign, the Church starts from zero to raise the necessary resources to sustain itswork for the coming year and each year there are many unknowns which impact annual giving.

The goal of the Foundation is to provide for future needs which cannot be met through the annualcampaign. The Foundation provides opportunities for members to extend their giving, perhaps for use beyond their own lifetimes. It gives today’s faithful Christians an opportunity to leave aheartfelt legacy for subsequent generations of believers.

All members are welcome to attend. RSVPs will be taken by the church office in March 2016.

&Envisioning 20/20 Appreciative Inquiry

Recently, we introduced the mission of the Envisioning 20/20 team, which is: Listening to each other and the congregation to discover God's vision for First Presbyterian Church.

At the same time, Richard re-introduced The Prayer of Examen (The Purple Prayer)-- and he encouraged everyone to join the Envisioning 20/20 team in using it to help us quiet our hearts and minds and enter into authentic and transparent prayerwith God.

We now want to introduce the philosophy that is guiding much of the work of theteam, Appreciative Inquiry -- which focuses on positive outcomes and successes asthe basis for discussion and planning. Our consultant, Rev. Jim Kitchens, will useAppreciative Inquiry as he leads us in our congregation-wide discussions.

This approach may be different from other long-range planning you might have experienced. The questions you will be asked to consider may be different fromones you have been asked before. The first assumption in Appreciative Inquiry isthat all churches do something well.

Appreciative Inquiry is an approach that asks us to share what works in our church andappreciate it. This process will generate a series of statements that describe where FirstPres. wants to be, based on the high moments of where we have been. Because thestatements are grounded in real experience and history, we will know how to repeattheir success.

You’re invited and encouraged to attend each of these gatherings. The Envisioning 20/20team will be there to listen to you.

There will be three congregational gatherings facilitated by Rev. Jim Kitchens during which we will look at Where We Have Been (January 10), Where We are Now(February 14), and Where We’d like to Be in the Future (March 6). Those gatheringswill be in Fellowship Hall at 11:00 AM. A light meal will be served. Child carethrough middle school age will be provided.

If you have questions, please speak with one of the Envisioning 20/20 Team: LizTerrill, Harry Hoyt, Merriam Rink, Jim Keenan, Cindy Meinert, Mark Jones, Kathy Bowerman, Ted Brown, Pam Paulsen, or Kurt Schreiner.
