PREPARING TO HEAR GOD’S WORD

THE CALL TO WORSHIP-written by Kate Reeves Ashley Walker

The youth of this church welcome you this morning to this special Youth Sunday service where there is an overarching theme of unity.  As children of New Canaan, we’ve grown up in a rather homogenous culture and have been surrounded by very similar points of views. As we age, we have had the opportunity through this church to learn from a diverse set of perspectives shared by all of God’s children.  This church has taught us how to respect and celebrate differences.

Max Gifford This church is “our safe and sacred place” because it is God’s home.  Through youth group, we have discovered that this atmosphere is extended far beyond our church.  We’ve been at home with God in the Scottish Highlands of Iona, within the unfinished walls of houses destroyed by Superstorm Sandy, and while caring for our Belizean brothers and sisters, to name a few.  God’s roof of love extends even into places where hopelessness reigns.  Unity reminds us that every person is our brother or sister in Christ.

Kate ReevesThrough the hundreds of unanswerable questions stimulated throughout Sunday’s Cool and Confirmation class, we have become fully aware that God is beyond comprehension and is an indescribable being.  Yet, God speaks in the powerful language of love and hope. While conversing with a person on the other side of the world, listening to Kibbie’s lessons in Sunday’s Cool, or Paul’s sermons, the voice of God shines through, telling us to let go of the barriers between us and speak in God’s language of love instead.

Michelle LaBadie The Scriptures are full of stories that emphasize the importance of being united through love.  In the Book of John Chapter 4, Verses 18-19, it is written that “there is no fear in love.  But perfect love drives out fear… we love because God first loved us”.  At this moment in history, we bear witness to a society plagued by fear.  This fear has poisoned our hearts, causing this world to divide itself into race, gender, country, etc.  But as Christians, we have also witnessed Jesus’s example of how to love

Page 3: First Presbyterian Churchfpcnc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/youth-sunday-201…  · Web viewFIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. ORDER OF WORSHIP. YOUTH SUNDAY. February 12, 2017 10:00 A.M.

each other, and so we too must be a disciple of the Lord by trying to heal the world again through the power of love.

Nichole LaBadieWill we love those we have never met, even those whose ways we may not understand?  Will we regard the diversity in this world as a blessing instead of wishing people were more like ourselves? Will we make decisions in our life by thinking through the lens of the love of Jesus Christ?  Will we do our best to provide for and help others in need?  Jesus called us to embody his Spirit.  Let us begin by worshipping God together!

*THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN “The Summons” KELVINGROVE

A CELTIC PRAYER                                                                           Julia Sulkowski You O Lord are the peace of all things calm. You are the place to hide from harm. You are the light that shines in dark. You are the heart's eternal spark. You are the door that's open wide. You are the guest who waits inside. You are the stranger at the door. You are the calling of the poor. You are the light, the truth, the way. You are my Saviour this very day.

(Celtic oral tradition - 1st millennium)

A DIALOGUE ABOUT CHOICES LED BY THE CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2017 How do you respond with respect and love….

Colin MennittMy friend is moving away. I am trying to spend as much time as I can with him before he moves away.

Holly KnightWhat do you do when you are told a false rumor about your friend? Do you repeat it? Do you question it? How I responded with respect and love is to question the person who was spreading the rumor and say, “that is not true, please do not spread that.”

Shea HobbsWhat do you do when you are stuck in a lie and cannot get out? The way I have tried to respond as a Christian is by telling the truth no matter what the punishment, apologizing for lying, and never doing it again.

Augie KelliherOne of my friends is an atheist. He tells me that it is impossible that there is a God. I responded by saying God will love you no matter what.

Vivi ReevesWhat do you do when your friend does really well on a test that you failed? I responded by congratulating them instead of saying “no one wants to hear about your 100% miss smarty pants!”

Greg MortensenWhat do you do when a friend’s relative passes away? I responded by asking them about their loved one, what memories they have, and you sit with them while they talk.

Audrey MagnusenWhat do you do when a teacher favors or treats people differently? I responded by respecting the kid’s feelings if they are hurt, ask if they want to talk about it, and listen with love and compassion.

Alexis RodgersWhat do you do when you see a kid in your class cheat on a test that you have studied hard for? You decide to tell the teacher that kids are cheating, but you do not give names. This way you tell the teacher to pay attention, and it puts everyone on notice.

Jack McCarthyWhat do you do when your childhood friend’s parents’ divorce? I responded by reaching out and calling them, talking when they need to talk, and doing whatever it takes so they can get through this tough time.

Colin ByrneWhat do you do when your best friend breaks his collarbone and cannot do the things he used to do? I responded with kind words, playing games that you can play together, and carrying his backpack to the bus so he doesn’t have to.

Nick WoodsWhat do you do when you find out your friend is gay? I responded by treating him the way I always have, because he is my friend and that will never change.

Alexander WalkerWhat if someone on your sports team does something spectacular in a game that you couldn't do? Instead of feeling jealous or resentful that you weren't the star that day, you try to be happy for your team and your teammates.

Alexandra Gillespie What do you do when your friend is constantly struggling with something you can do easily? You respond with compassion, relating to a time when you struggled and offer to help them.

CHERUB CHOIR ANTHEM “Cover the World with Love” music/words by Jerry EstesOne heart loving another, two hands reaching out, we can cover the world with love. Two voices singing together, one song ringing out, we can cover the world with love.Starting with this moment, we can make a change; if we love those around us, maybe they will do the same. Though we have a small voice and just a simple song, let’s place it in the heart of another, so they can pass it on.

(Cherubs will return to their parents following the anthem).

THE ANNOUNCEMENTS(Children are invited to stay for this special service hosted by our youth.  There will be a seventh inning stretch during the offering where the children are asked to collect food from our Cents-ability offering which is located on the sides of the sanctuary and bring it forward.)

HEARING GOD’S WORD PROCLAIMED

THE EPISTLE LESSON Colossians 3:12-14 Ashley WalkerPut on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Make me a star to lighten the darkness,Make me so bright with your living word, that I may shine with your love.

THE EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians: 13:4-8, 13 Freia MierendorfLove is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
