COVENANT COUNSELING CENTER’S MENTAL HEALTH MOMENT:
RESILIENCY
It goes without saying we are in unprecedented times where discovering our “new normal” is a daily challenge. The
“waters are unchartered,” and there is no “play book” to go by. For many of us, stress is a constant.
When we talk about “mental health” we are talking about our mental and emotional well being. Our mental health
influences how we THINK, how we FEEL, and how we BEHAVE. Our mental well being directly affects our abil-
ity to handle stress, overcome challenges, build and maintain relationships and recover from difficulties and set-
backs.
What does being mentally and emotionally healthy mean? It means more than just being free of depression, anxiety,
or other psychiatric illnesses. Below are a few traits of mental well being:
Enjoying life with the ability to laugh and have fun
Able to effectively manage stress and bounce back from adversity
Feeling a sense of meaning and purpose in our daily activities, work, and in our relationships
Being flexible and adaptable to change
Able to build and maintain fulfilling relationships
Just as physically healthy people are better able to bounce back from illness/injury; people with strong mental health
are better able to bounce back from adversity, trauma, and stress. The ability to “bounce back” is called RESILI-
ENCE. People who have the tools associated with resiliency are better able to cope with difficult situations and
maintain a positive outlook. They remain focused, flexible, and productive in both good and bad times.
Below are a few tips in developing RESILIENCY:
Practice good self-care
Eat well, move your body, get proper rest (enough said).
Disconnect from electronics and social media
Add electronic-free time daily.
Engage in activities that provide meaning & make you happy, productive, and challenge your creativity
Volunteer
Helping others will enrich and expand your life.
Engage in mindfulness or meditation
These activities help us to be fully present in the moment, ground us to life, and promote relaxation.
Maintain a healthy/active spiritual life
While people have many different religions and different paths to find God and express their spirituality, re-
search indicates those who are more connected to their spiritual and religious practices are more likely to
experience comfort, peace, and relief from stress. While spirituality is a very personal experience, there is
good evidence to show that being spiritually grounded serves well as a buffer to stress. Avoid heavy substance use
Many people use alcohol and other drugs to self-medicate, but in reality substance use and other excessive be-
haviors negatively impact one’s ability to function adaptively.
Get help from a licensed mental health professional when you need it
Seeking help is a sign of strength, not a weakness. Just as it requires proper “know how” and effort to build and
maintain physical health, so it is with mental health.

TIME TO DONATE TOYS It is time to collect TOYS for the Colquitt County Children’s Toy Shop. These toys
will be delivered to children for Christmas. New toys or gently used second hand
toys are welcomed. Summer is a great time to clean out those toy boxes to get
ready for the next year. So far, the donation box is empty.
DON’T FORGET TO UPDATE YOUR MEMBER PROFILE Yes, even if your address, phone number, and family
have not changed, we need you to complete the Family
and Personal Information forms. Susan is entering the in-
formation in Nick Rebbe’s church computer. It is easier and
less time consuming to enter the information from your form
than to chase it through several different locations. The Per-
sonal Information form will give the additional information of
which programs in the church that you are active or interest-
ed in serving. We now have received and updated 84
families and 184 individuals.
Call 229-985-3158 or use this link to access & print member
information forms to fill out and return to the office:

Stewardship Campaign 2020: Realizing the Dream
August - The 20 committees and programs of the church meet to plan goals and activities for the coming
year. Finances needed to accomplish these goals are identified and each committee/program formulates a
budget.
September - Committee/Program budgets are presented to the church treasurer who combines them into a
preliminary budget and presents it to the Finance Committee for deliberation. The Diaconate and Session
review the preliminary budget at their monthly meetings.
October – The Finance Committee finalizes the budget and presents it to the Diaconate. Session approves
the final budget for presentation to the congregation. Each member receive a letter with the budget, a brief
explanation, and a pledge card.
November – Presentations are made during worship each week and at WATCH about the impact of the
budget on the programs and activities of the church. Commitment Sunday is observed on the Sunday before
Thanksgiving when members bring their completed pledge cards to the altar.
December – The Finance Committee compares pledges received with the proposed budget and makes any
necessary adjustments. The Diaconate reviews the budget and passes it on to the Session for final approval.
