*CALL TO WORSHIP

One: People of God, on this Lenten journey, what will you eat?

Many: The Word of the Lord is our daily bread.

One: People of God, in this time of temptation, how will you live?

Many: Our faith is in the faithfulness of God.

One: People of God, each day of your lives, whom will you serve? Many: We worship the Lord our God alone!

*OPENING PRAYER

*HYMN 334 With Grateful Heart My Thanks I Bring ST. PETERSBURG

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison) Lord God, you know the ways of good and evil. You know the things that

tempt us and the things that give us life. You know our nakedness, and you

know our sin. We confess that we have disobeyed your word, denying your

providence and care and relying on our own cleverness. Have mercy on us we

pray: cover us with your grace, feed us with the bread of life, and re-create

us in your image; through Jesus Christ our Savior.

(In silence, let us offer our personal confessions.)

Amen.

KYRIE Lord, Have Mercy Hal H. Hopson FPC Bicentennial Commissioned Service Music

(the congregation is invited to sing each line of the kyrie) Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

One: Friends, God is for us and not against us! For that very reason, God sent

his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be

saved through him. Believe the good news, in Jesus Christ we are forgiven!

Many: Thanks be to God. Amen.

*Those who are able, please stand.

Worship bags and materials for children are available by the front door. Children are encouraged to share their “Worship Art” by placing it in the marked baskets by the front door after the service.

The season of Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and self-examination in preparation for the celebration of the resur-rection of the Lord at Easter. It is a period of 40 days — like the flood of Genesis, Moses’ sojourn at Mount Sinai, Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb, Jo-nah’s call to Ninevah to repent and Jesus’ time of testing in the wilderness. (The Sundays in Lent are not counted in this reckoning of the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter, as every Lord’s Day is a celebra-tion of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.) In the early church, Lent was a time of preparation for the celebration of baptism at the Easter Vigil. In many commu-nities of faith it remains a time to reflect deeply on the theme of baptismal discipleship.

PROCLAIM GOD’S WORD

TIME FOR YOUNG DISCIPLES (11:00)

At this time all children will be invited to come to the chancel steps. Afterwards, parents of children KINDERGARTEN AND YOUNGER may then walk them to the nursery for sign-in to the child care program. 1ST GRADE AND UP should remain in the sanctuary with their parents. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST LESSON Joel 2:12-16

Yet even now, says the LORD, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with

weeping, and with mourning; rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the LORD, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abound-

ing in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. Who knows whether he will not

turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink

offering for the LORD, your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a

solemn assembly; gather the people. Sanctify the congregation; assemble the

aged; gather the children, even infants at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room, and the bride her canopy.

One: This is the Word of the Lord.

Many: Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM (8:30) Give Me Jesus Arr. Mark Hayes

Cole Henry, tenor

Oh, when I come to die, give me Jesus You may have all this world, give me Jesus. Dark midnight was my cry, give me Jesus. You may have all this world; give me Jesus

You may have all this world, With its troubles and cares,

For of this I am sure, give me Jesus.

(11:00) Set Me as a Seal Upon Your Heart David N. Childs

Chancel Choir

Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm.

For love is as strong as death. Many waters cannot quench love,

Neither can floods drown it. Set me as a seal upon your heart,

as a seal upon your arm. For love is as strong as death.

*Those who are able, please stand.

The Book of Joel calls the peo-ple to recognize a locust plague as a sign from God that they should repent, and then goes on to envision a final judgment when God will punish evil na-tions and vindicate Israel.

*PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND DEDICATION

THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

INVITATION TO THE TABLE

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you!

Leader: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: We praise you, Lord God, for your history of salvation...we, too, glorify

your name and lift our voices in joyful praise:

SANCTUS

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might.

Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

Leader: We praise you for Jesus Christ, born of Mary…

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

Leader: As we remember Christ’s baptism...we proclaim that mystery called faith:

People: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again.

Leader: We praise you for your Spirit who guides us...And now, with the confi- dence of his children, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come,

thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily

bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the

power and the glory forever. Amen.

*Those who are able, please stand.

Around the Table of the Lord, God’s people are in communion with Christ and with all who be-long to Christ. Reconciliation with Christ compels reconciliation with one another. All the baptized faithful are to be welcomed to the Table, and none shall be excluded because of race, sex, age, economic status, social class, handicapping condition, difference of culture or language, or any barrier created by human injustice. Coming to the Lord’s Table the faithful are actively to seek reconciliation in every in-stance of conflict or division be-tween them and their neighbors. Each time they gather at the Table the believing community (a) are united with the Church in every place, and the whole Church is present; (b) join with all the faithful in heaven and on earth in offering thanksgiving to the triune God; (c) renew the vows taken at Baptism; and they commit themselves afresh to love and serve God, one another, and their neighbors in the world.

SHARING THE BREAD AND CUP

Receive and eat the bread. Hold the cup and drink when all have been served.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

All: Lord God, in deep gratitude for this time of worship, for this meal, and

for this church, we give ourselves to you. Take us out to live as transformed

people because we have shared the living bread and we cannot remain the

same. Ask much of us, expect much from us, enable much by us, and en-courage many through us. May we each live to your glory, now and forever

more, Amen.

March Mission of the Month

COOKIES FOR KAIROS

The entire congregation has the opportunity to

contribute Cookies that will be taken by friend of the

congregation and husband of Dr. Patricia Hacker,

Bruce Hacker, as he attends the Limestone Prison

Kairos weekend March 26-29th.

From the Kairos website:

For many Kairos communities, cookies

that are lovingly and prayerfully made by the

Body of Christ are a wonderful example of Agape. Rather than focusing on your need to

gather so many cookies, focus on the opportunity

that Kairos offers to the Christian community.

An opportunity to be part of the "pipeline" that

will carry Christ's living waters directly to the

hearts of the residents.

On the Sign-up Bulletin Board near the

business offices you will find detailed instructions

you make take home on what you may and may not

use for cookie preparations. Please prayerfully consider making a few

dozen cookies for this important prison ministry.

Cookies are to be placed by dozen portions in large

zip-lock bags.

COOKIES SHOULD BE RETURNED TO THE CHURCH NO LATER THAN WEDNESDAY,

MARCH 25TH.

There will be boxes to receive the cookies in

the Historic Room, located off the hall leading to the Fellowship Hall.

Questions should be directed to Karen

Madison: [email protected].

Mission of the Year:

The Backpack Ministry

Beginning in March, every member of the con-gregation, young and old, will have the opportunity

to be a part of ministering to children in our com-

munity in a way that addresses hunger and educa-

tion. Through the Food Bank of North Alabama,

we have been assigned to serve the elementary age

children of The Academy of Academics and Arts (AAA) which is located on Sparkman Drive.

The excerpt below, from the Food Bank of N. Ala-

bama website, explains the program: Thousands of school-age children in north Alabama qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school…. On Fridays, these programs ensure two-day supplemental meal kits are discreetly slipped into the backpacks of chil-dren at risk of hunger over the weekend. During holidays, many programs strive to give more. The kits include ready-to-eat foods such as milk, cereal, fruit cups, pasta and sauce and more. As a result, students arrive to school on Monday ready and able to learn without the painful distraction of hunger. We will need one group a week to make food

bags. For the time being, the work will be done in

a designated classroom on the second floor of the

GBH, which is accessible by elevator. In addition to filling food packs, you may also

serve the Backpack Ministry by:

Donating specific foods from a provided list.

Place food in the Food Pantry Box.

Donate money to purchase food. Volunteer to deliver the food packs to AAA.

Pray for AAA and the Back Pack Ministry

son at [email protected] or Andrew Bevel
