First Presbyterian Church-Lincoln

First Sunday of Advent

December 1, 2013

As you enter the Sanctuary, we invite you to make the transition from "getting here" to "being here". Take these moments of quiet time to come fully into the presence of God and the faith

community. Before worship, speak quietly to God…during worship, listen to God speak to you…following worship, speak to the world in love.

Advent Prayer

*HYMN #15 “Rejoice! Rejoice, Believers” Presbyterian Hymnal CALL TO CONFESSION Because God’s Day awaits us, more is expected of us. Yet, we turn away from

God’s gracious calling, we doze off in our discipleship, we continue to walk in sin’s shadows. Let us confess how we are not ready for the Advent of God, yet long for God to come into our lives.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION (UNISON) How absurd the prophet sounds, God of holy seasons: cannon shells being turned into light fixtures, drones becoming kites for children, military spend-ing used to pay for scholarship for those who attend Peace’s university. How

naïve can anyone be!

But in your time, God of every moment, lives can be transformed, justice can become impartial, love and hope can outlast despair and hate, our hearts can become doorways through which Christ can enter. We know this because Je-

sus has come to show us the path of faith, illuminated by your grace.

SILENT CONFESSION

The LAMAS concert will be on Sunday afternoon, December 22. There will also be a sign up sheet for that event. We will meet at the high school. Cookie Exchange Sunday, December 15, Following worship see flyer. A Note about the Garden Tool: The garden tool used in today’s worship service was loaned to First Presbyterian Church by Raw Tools, an organization in Phila-delphia that has committed itself to peace by taking weapons and turning them into tools. The metal in the tool is from about 5 inches of the barrel of a handgun donated for transformation at an event called the Isaiah Forum in September of 2013. If you look closely, you’ll notice an olive branch burnt into two sides of the grip on the handle. As part of the RAW tools INC. logo, the olive branch is often associated with peace, promise, freedom, and a new beginning. You can learn more about this raw tool by visiting rawtools.org.

NEWS YOU NEED TO KNOW

Advent Resource; Want to begin a new practice this Advent, but need help doing so? Located in the back of the Sanctuary is a book of daily meditations for the Advent, season for all who are interested. There are 20 copies avail-able, and more can be ordered upon request. The book, Preparing for Christ-mas, offers daily meditations, prayers, Scripture readings, and questions for reflection for each day of Advent. Advent Vespers: A Saturday Night Spiritual Formation Opportunity Ad-vent Vespers: A Saturday Night Spiritual Formation Opportunity. Each Satur-day night during the season of Advent (11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21), you are invited to participate in the communal practice of contemplative waiting. Cen-tered on silence, with readings from church ancestors, we will gather around

an advent wreath to prayerfully and contemplatively ponder that for which we are waiting: the arrival of Emmanuel, God with us. The service begins at 5 p.m. and will last 45 minutes. Each service will be held in Union Chapel lo-cated inside First Presbyterian Church. Youth Group News : December 15: All youth are invited to this “Afternoon Retreat” where we will explore the birth narrative of Jesus through discussion and art. Our time together will begin right after worship on Sunday, and extend until 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided! Invite friends to this day of prayer, reflec-tion, and creativity! Sunday, December 15, is the annual Christmas Cantata. A Note About the Bulletin Cover: The artwork on the front of our bulletin is a 14th Century wall painting of the Virgin Mary. It is a rare depiction of Mary pregnant with the Christ child: there are no other known details about this piece of art. It is our hope that this image of an expectant mother will aid us in our Advent waiting, as we move ever so slowly to the day of Christ’s nativity, trusting that at any moment, God will reveal something new. Sign up for Christmas Poinsettias in the back of the Sanctuary by Decem-ber 8. If you are interested in attending Christmas in the Chapel at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 8 please sign the sheet at the back of the Sanctuary on Sunday, or call the office to sign up. Our group will meet at the chapel at LCU.
