PASTOR’S PONDERINGS Mark 1:34-35 And he cured many who were sick with

various diseases and cast out many demons; and he

would not permit the demons to speak, because they

knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark,

he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he

prayed.

Ahh… Summer time. A time when school is

over. A time when family vacations are prevalent. A

time when things slow down a bit (well it is so darn

hot it has to be) unless you’re on a boat or jet ski.

Perhaps you play golf or fish a little more. Perhaps

you play some softball or rest next to a pool, lake,

ocean/gulf, or river. Perhaps you actually float on one

of those bodies of water. Ahh…. Summertime ….

Recreation…RE-CREATION.

In Genesis we are told that God rested on the

seventh day and called it holy. God was busy for six

days creating everything, God realized a rest was

needed.

In the Marken text Jesus has just healed many

and drove out many demons. In the next chapter

Jesus goes up to the mountainside to pray. He was

alone. In Luke Jesus withdraws quite frequently to

pray and to be alone, or to a lonely place. In Luke

5:16 we are told he frequently did it.

Just like after lots of use and wear and tear the

kitchen and Fellowship Hall need a break to get

refreshed, we too need to be refreshed.

We’ve finished the Christmas and Easter

seasons. We’ve begun new and exciting ministries.

We’ve had a great year of music, Christian education,

picnics, fellowship, movie nights, game nights, and

the list just gets bigger and bigger.

So, as we head into June let’s take some deep

breathes, relax and pray. Come to worship on

Sundays and allow yourself to be reinvigorated by the

word, the music, and the fellowship.

When we get back at it in August, we will

have a new Fellowship Hall and kitchen makeover,

the new program year begins, and we will be headed

towards Labor Day, World Communion,

Thanksgiving, Stewardship, Advent, Cantata,

Longest Night, Christmas Eve. (Christmas is only

220 some days away!). Please participate when you

can and remember to keep up on your pledges.

Well I’m off now on vacation knowing some

sermons are written. Tim and I have selected the

hymns and scriptures to Christmas. Our bagpiper is

reserved. We are really excited about the rest of the

year.

POM ministries is up and running and we’ve

recorded almost 12 episodes of our Amazing Grace

segments along with blogs and POMcasts. We are

working on our Church Lady Snacks sections. We’ve

had such a good response we may create a Facebook

page just for POM.

OK…. now I’m really done and going on

vacation…I promise! I’m going off to play some

golf with Dad and then celebrate some time with the

kids and grandkids (next to the pool). PEACE BE

WITH YOU ALL!!!!!

Pastor Ken

Music Notes

The second Sunday of June is one of my favorite holy days

of the church year: the Day of Pentecost. We invite everyone

to wear RED to the worship service on Sunday, June 9th, as

we celebrate the birthday of the Church and the coming of

the Holy Spirit.

The choir and band will continue to participate in leading worship with hymns,

songs, and offertory anthems throughout the summer. There will be no Wednesday

rehearsals, but we will still meet at 9:30am on Sundays to go through the music for

that day’s service. Summer is a great time to “give it a try” if you’re interested in

singing with the choir!

Our regular rehearsal schedule will commence at 6:30pm on Wednesday, July 31 (to

start preparing anthems for “the new year” beginning on August 18: Rally Day).

If you are interested in participating in music ministry at First Presbyterian Church

of Lake City, please feel free to call the church office at 386-752-0670, email me at

[email protected], or speak to me before or after worship on Sunday.

YOUTH Scott Moore, Elder

COMMITTEE NOTES, Continued

We had a lot of fun in May here with our youth group.

Everything from the school year was celebrated with a

fun mystery themed luncheon hosted by Mrs. Cathy

Glass. We all had a great time and discussed ideas and

schedules for the summer activities. Stay tuned for

more information as those plans are finalized.

We also are looking forward to our kids having a great time at Camp

Montgomery’s Culinary Camp this June. Lots of our youth plus their

family and friends are signed up already, so FPC Lake City will be well

represented. Thank you to all our parents, grandparents and guardians for

allowing us to spend time with your kids.

A special thank you to

Cathy Glass for all the time

and talent she donates to

our church youth.

Although we had to move the location of the End of School/Beginning of Summer

picnic from the Ogden farm to the Fellowship Hall, we had fun. While everybody

was enjoying their lunch, I realized that the sounds of laughter and talking were

significant, which was music to my ears. Thanks to all who still came to the picnic

and hopefully got to visit with somebody that you didn’t know so well. We’re not

giving up on a picnic at the Ogden’s, so…...

CONGREGATIONAL CARE Cheryl Whigham, Elder

to PHYLLIS SKINNER!

Phyllis is finally hanging up her hat after delivering our Sunday bulletins after many, many years. She and Jane Henderson faithfully visited our homebound and facility members weekly. If they were unavailable to make the visits and one of us took their place, folks al-ways asked “when will Phyllis be back?” They loved her and missed her visit when she was out. She’s done this church a great service over the years and deserves our thanks.

Shirley Gordon has agreed to take over this mission with the help of Robert and/or Kitty March. Thank you, thank you for being willing to take over these much appreciated service.

Ritchie Glass graduated from Branford High School and is currently planning to major in Sports Administration at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, FL.

Elaine Phillips received her doctoral degree in Education

with majors in Curriculum and Instruction at Liberty

University.

My dissertation was a study in advanced aged individuals who pursued a doctoral degree: "A Phenomenological Study of Advanced Aged Individuals Pursuing a Doctoral Degree." My research participants were from two universities: a Florida University and Liberty University. All these participants believe that no one should retire. That the society would be better off and everyone would live longer if they continued active in a job or worthwhile activity for society.

Devin Adams recently graduated from Florida Gateway Fire Academy. He looks forward to pursuing a career as a first responder and serving his community.

The Florida Gateway College Board of Trustees officially approved the naming of Building

Number 2 the James Montgomery Building “Mr. Mont”.

Over the past 60 years, Mr. Montgomery has been an educator at both Columbia County Schools

and Florida Gateway College. Thousands of students have been taught by Mr. Montgomery

at both schools. Mr. Montgomery was one of the first faculty members at FGC to teach dual

enrollment students and set the bar high for the quality instruction to those students.

In addition, Mr. Montgomery has been a significant donor to the Foundation for Florida

Gateway College. The Foundation has awarded over 450 scholarships to individuals for the past

30 years as part of his Endowment. His financial support of our students and alumni has helped

many individuals become successful in their careers and life.

On a personal note, James was one of the first individuals to welcome me into this community

and embraced this “Yankee” without bias. He has been a great listener, unofficial advisor,

historian and just a great friend to me over the past four years. His impact whether it was for 60

years or for only a short time is just extraordinary.

The building dedication ceremony took place Monday, May 20th at 10:30 am in front of

building 2.

Darian Sparrow, my granddaughter’s best friend

for 20 years, went into a coma due to her liver imploding

on Feb 2nd. Since she was a healthy 24 year old girl with

a healthy lifestyle the doctors placed her on the top of the

transplant list. She was kept alive by a Respiratory

Therapist, her mother until Feb 16th.

I received a call from my daughter, Judi, to please pray for Darian. I placed

her on the church prayer list and called all the prayer worriers I could think of to pray

for this sweet girl. I prayed “Dear Lord, Thy will be done. My children are in pain for

their friend.”

Our prayers were answered. On Feb 16th she received her “gift” liver which

was a perfect match. March came around and she would not come out of the coma,

her brain stem was separating which would mean, soon she would be in a vegetative

state if she survived. The mother now had to make a hard decision, this is her only

child. After much thought she decided to give her back to the God and allowed the

doctors to remove her from life support on a Friday. Sunday morning there were

brain waves. She slowly came out of the coma. Her first comment was, “my birthday

is next week”.

She is now in therapy, learning to walk, talk and mend. With many

challenges ahead she still needs prayers. Pray for strength and full recovery. God is

on her side. Because of people like you, that have prayed for her, she will have a

story to tell. My children have witnessed a miracle and they are aware of God’s

grace, love and healing power. Thank you Dear Jesus, my Lord and Savior.
