WORSHIP NOTES

During this season of Epiphany we celebrate

God’s self-revelation to the world in Jesus Christ.

Our worship theme is “Turn Round Right” (from

the song “Simple Gifts”), which highlights our

response to God’s self-revelation. The lectionary

passages for Epiphany highlight turning in some

way—turning from evil, turning direction, turning

the other cheek, turning the world upside down,

and so forth. Such turning doesn’t necessarily

involve a 180-degree course change, but is more

likely a matter of sharpening our focus and

shoring up around the edges of our lives, both

individually and as a congregation.

The text of today's anthem, Christus Paradox, was

written by Sylvia Dunstan in 1984, and appears

as hymn 274 in Glory to God. Her words call our

attention to the ways that various attributes and

images of Christ seem to be in tension, even

contradiction, with each other. The text is replete

with biblical allusions, notably Revelation 5:12,

"Worthy is the Lamb."

SMALL GREAT THINGS This afternoon, Anna Robinson,

Joe Gray, and Sharon begin a

three-week study of the #1 New

York Times bestseller Small

Great Things, by Jodi Picoult.

The novel tells the story of Ruth,

an African American labor-and-

delivery nurse, who is told not

to touch a newborn at the request of his white

supremacist parents. The baby goes into distress

while Ruth is alone with him in the nursery. What

she decides to do and the aftermath bring to light

the issues of prejudice, race, and justice. Anna

said, “This book comes closer than anything ever

has in helping me understand what it is like to be a

person of color in this country.” While it is helpful

to read the book in advance, it isn’t necessary. The

discussion begins at 1:00 p.m. in room 102.

MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY LOOKS AT ISAIAH

Sharon continues our exploration of the book of

Isaiah. All are invited to the study, which is held

each Wednesday, 6:00 to 6:45 p.m., in the fellow-

ship hall. Those who would like to visit for a bit

prior to the study are invited to bring a “brown

bag dinner” at 5:30 p.m. Childcare is available.

FOOD 4 KIDS BACKPACKS

The Food 4 Kids program will be

working tomorrow, Feb. 13, and

Tuesday, Feb. 14, at First United

Methodist Church, Oak Ridge. Meet

at FUMC at 1:30 p.m. Monday to pack backpacks

and Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. to load up and deliver

backpacks to local schools.

Sixth through twelfth graders continue their study of “Explorations in Faith” during

Sunday school. Upon completion of the ten-week course (Feb. 5-April 9) taught by Sharon and Chris, those who have yet to

be baptized and/or confirmed as members of FPC will have the opportunity to do so

on Easter Sunday.

ORCMA COFFEE CONCERT Pianist Emi Kagawa is the featured performer for the next Oak Ridge

Civic Music Association Coffee Concert next Sunday, Feb. 19, at 7:30

p.m., here at First Presbyterian Church. She will be playing works by

Schumann and Scarlatti. The concert is free and open to the public.

A native of Osaka, Japan, Ms. Kagawa has been active as both a

soloist and a chamber musician, and has performed extensively through-

out the United States, Canada, Italy, and Japan.
