ConfessionCall to Confession The Reverend Anna Dickson

Prayer of Confession Merciful God, you call, but we are hard of hearing. You beckon, but we turn the other way. Sin keeps us from responding to you, and so we fail to love mercy, show kindness and walk humbly with you.

Forgive our lack of attention to the things that matter. Focus us on your call to worship and service. Release us from all that prevents us from being the people you would have us be, so that we may choose the path that points in the way of Jesus Christ, whose love is stronger than death. Amen. Response (Hymn No. 551) land of rest Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy; Lord, have mercy upon us.

Assurance of Pardon One: Friends, believe the good news. All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. *Response (Hymn No. 33) llanfair Praise the Lord! God’s glories show, Alleluia! Saints within God’s courts below, Alleluia! Angels round the throne above, Alleluia! All who see and share God’s love. Alleluia!

Sacrament of BaptismSacrament of Baptism Eleanor Eldridge Merriman *Apostles’ Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture through Music Isaiah 6:1-8 David McK. Williams In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high, and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood a seraphim; each one had six wings. With twain he covered his face, with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another and said “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts. The earth is full of his glory.” And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried and the house was filled with smoke. Then said I, “Woe is me! For I am undone because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.” Then flew one of the seraphim, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar; and he laid it upon my mouth and said “Lo, this hath touched thy lips, and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin is purged.” Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then said I, “Here am I. Send me.”

ResponsePrayers of the People & The Lord’s Prayer The Reverend Robert Galloway

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

January Sermon and Pathways Focus:  The Great Ends of the Church “The Great Ends of the Church”, six aspirations for the body of Christ, suggest that the church is heading somewhere. Indeed we are on a journey. For 200 years, First Presbyterian has been striving towards these goals that were established in the early 20th century. While we are rooted in tradition, we are committed to the future. January’s Sermon Series and Pathways to Discipleship will explore the foundation of the Great Ends and will shine light on the ways our history has shaped our ministries and how FPC is being called forward.  Register here for weekly classes @10 a.m. January 3-24:  https://bit.ly/GreatEndsJanClasses
