Many of the carers work long hours seven days a week, with little respite. The charity is constantly looking to recruit new volunteers in the Ferryhill area to aid with transport services. Carers are faced with many problems - with transport being just one of them. As well as the transport service, they also offer a sitting and befriending service. The volunteer sitters provide two to four hours per week sitting with the cared-for people, whilst their carer can go out for some well-earned respite. Sitters are not expected to provide any personal care, they simply befriend the person and can have a chat, read, watch TV or even play games with them. Sometimes, the volunteers is the only other person that they see. For more information on how to volunteer, contact Jo on 01325 313123. A volunteer takes local resident Eric on a trip to the shops. Sedgefield Borough Homes has published the first in a series of intelligence-led neighbourhood plans in a bid to improve its commu- nities, and our area is the first to have plans in place. Sbh, which manages around 1900 properties in the Ferryhill and Chilton area, is the first registered housing provider from the North East to publish plans of this type. The housing association, which underwent major restructuring earlier this year, set up specialist teams to lead on the plans, which will result in the delivery of a number of services to tackle issues such as unemployment, health, welfare reform and environmental quality of neighbourhoods. Just some of the items on the agenda include bringing eight empty homes in Dean Bank back into use and improving gardens in Arthur Street in Chilton. Sbh also plan to help residents with issues such as unemployment and household income, by providing money advice and supporting residents in gaining new skills which could lead to employment. Alan Boddy, executive director people and com- munities, for sbh, said, “Strong and vibrant com- munities are about more than good housing, they are about sustainability factors such as employment, health, the environment and community cohesion. “We want to support our communities but also give them the skills and tools needed to empower them to make decisions, and a difference locally.” Detailed neighbourhood plans for Dean Bank, Chilton & Chilton Lane, West Cornforth and Ferryhill Village & Cleves Cross are now available online at www.sedgefield- boroughhomes.co.uk. Dig for victoryGreen-fingered youngsters are sowing the seeds of success by showing their commitment to improving the look of their village.Members of Chilton youth Club have spent the last two months helping Durham County Council’s civic pride officers spruce up their neighbourhood. After carrying out a litterpick and taking pho-tographs of the hard work involved in the ‘Chilton in Bloom’ bid, they have also been showing off their gardening skills at a local nursing home. Four young people from the club brightened up the redeveloped courtyard and gardens at Chilton care home, planting tubs and creating flower displays.Jimmy Bennett, street scene manager (south), said, “it’s refreshing to see how these youngsters have dug deep to show real community spirit.“They’ve got their hands dirty to keep Chilton

Ferryhill father spared jail after admitting chargesLocal father-of-two Stephen paul Williams was spared jail earlier this week, after admitting charges of possessing indecent images of children. Mr Williams had recently left his job as a night manager at ASDA as he planned to pursue a career in teaching, but his plans for a job in education are now in tatters after police found images of child por-nography on a computer in his home in Ferryhill.prosecutor Don McFoul told the court how police arrested Williams after a legitimate recipe website was hacked in 2008 and plastered with indecent images of children. The images remained online for 18 hours and were viewed by over 2,000 users. He continued to tell how Mr Williams downloaded 64 images, including 59 at the least serious level one, one at level two,

three at level three and one at level four. The most serious is level five. Mr Williams was arrested in January and admitted 17 charges of possessing child porn.Zoe passfield, defending, said that the offences were very much historic – the images were downloaded in early 2009 and last viewed in April 2009. She also told the court that Williams was depressed, suffering from ill health and drinking too much around that time. She said that Mr Williams was appalled and sickened by his own actions. She continued to say he has since turned his life around – winning student of the year on a previously enrolled college course.Recorder Darren preston said that although most of the images were at level one, some were not and these represented some of the most serious abuse

of children imaginable. He said, “For those images to be created, there has to be the abuse of children. if it was not for people who are willing to look at those images, there would not be quite so much abuse.“your activites, albeit for a short period of time, directly came about as the result of the abuse of children. “The impact on the victims of these kinds of offences hardly bears thinking about. you have children yourself. You do not need me to tell you how you would feel if similar things happened to them. “There is no excuse for what you did.”Mr Williams eight month jail sentence was suspended for two years and he will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years. He is also banned from working with children.

Trefoil Guild at SedgefieldTrefoil Guild would like to welcome members old and new alike who are interested in local Guilding and Scouting projects. Sessions will run initially from Bishop Middleham Village Hall,

starting on Thursday 22nd September at 7pm, but will also serve Ferrhill, the Trimdons, Fishburn and Sedgefield. All over 18s are welcome and refreshments will be provided.

police in Ferryhill are appealing for information after a number of garage break-ins in the Ferryhill, West Cornforth and Bishop Middleham areas. The incidents all happened on Sunday 31st July and Monday 1st August and entry has been gained to some of the garages but in most cases nothing was taken.pC Chris Metcalfe, from

the Safer Neighbourhood unit in Ferryhill, said, “We are keen to hear from anyone with any information about these incidents.“We can only guess at the intentions of those re-sponsible, as in most cases the garage locks and doors were damaged but nothing was removed. “We would urge people to be security conscious

when it comes to garages and outbuildings particu-larly through the summer months.”Anyone with any informa-tion is asked to contact Durham Constabulary on 0345 60 60 365 and ask for pC Chris Metcalfe at Ferryhill Safer Neigh-bourhood unit or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,

Was anything achieved by the public meeting in Dean Bank Institute on Friday July 29th?

A lot of feelings were expressed but nothing positive was resolved. However, it was decided to adjourn the meeting to be reconvened in a bigger hall at a future date to be decided, when some positive decisions can be taken.

A.S. HolmesFerryhill(See back page for more information)

A letter to Phil Wilson MP I am shocked to learn that yourself and Chilton Town Council are opposing the proposed wind farm on countryside south of Ferryhill and Chilton, saying the said 16 sq km site would be a blight on Durham Counties countryside, when this countryside is not accessible to the public and would only be seen as you whizzed past on the A1M.

There would be a lot of jobs created through the manufacturing of the wind farm, instal-lation of the wind farm and maintenance of the wind farm, and these wind turbines look a lot better than the carbuncle of a bio mass power station that was built at Chilton with foreign labour, after you said it would create jobs for locals.

Name and address withheld on request.

Dear Editor,

Thanks to three local young girls and their quick thinking actions they were able to alert a member of the public when an elderly lady collapsed in Chilton front street.

The lady was taken into Chilton Town Council offices where staff called the paramedics. They responded quickly and thankfully after some attention the lady was taken home.

Had it not been for the action of these young girls the outcome could have been different. Unfortunately at the time nobody got the girls names however they deserve praise for their actions.

Chilton Town Council

Local girl does coast to coast

Ten year-old Eleanor James last week completed a coast-to-coast bike ride with her dad, Daniel James. The father-daughter duo cycled the 145 mile route in three and a half days,

from Saturday 30th July to Tuesday 2nd August. The route was from Workington to Sunderland, stopping at Dalston, Alston and Endmondbyers before they made it home to rest their very tired legs!

Eleanor’s mother June James was delighted to welcome them home, and Eleanor and Daniel’s extended family and friends are all incredibly proud of their achieve-ment.

Local firm fined after worker loses fingersLocal manufactur-ing company parnaby Cyclones international Ltd have been fined over £10,000 after a worker severed three fingers whilst operating a bandsaw on the premises. John Houston from Ferryhill injured his left hand whilst cutting steel on the site at Chilton industrial estate in April last year. The bandsaw had no safety guard fitted and Mr Houston had ten hours of surgery to try to re-attach his fingers. The

Health & Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted the firm and Darlington Mag-istrates Court heard last Wednesday that parnaby Cyclones pleaded guilty to two breaches of employment law.HSE inspector Cain Mitchell said after the case, “This was an entirely avoidable accident. it resulted in Mr Houston suffering a life changing injury. “The bandsaw should not have been used without the correct guard to prevent access to the moving blade. “preventing access to dangerous parts of machinery with the use of guards is a simple, but vital precaution to help ensure workers’ safety.”Mr Houston was the managing director of his own company – AJL Safenet – and worked for Derek parnaby Cyclones internal during quiet periods. He has since been forced to cease trading

after being unable to return to work.A spokesperson for parnaby Cyclones said, “We are very sorry for Mr Houston and were all deeply saddened by the injury. “We took full responsibil-ity from the outset and we quickly identified im-provements which have been addressed. The company has a very good safety record, with good health and safety systems of work and no previous accidents on this type of machine.”The firm have said that the bandsaw could not completely be guarded to prevent injury. A full review of the company’s health and safety records has since been carried out, with a continuous review ongoing. Magistrates ordered parnaby Cyclones to pay £3,281 in costs and fined them £10,500 for the incident.
