53% of Bolivia’s GDP is concentrated in the two main cities of Santa Cruz and La Paz. (Source: Institute of National Statistics – 2013) As such, the vast majority of projects and investments can also be found in these two cities. The PMI chapter of Santa Cruz was founded in 2010 and to date has over 90 members. For the past five years it has been holding seminars as well as international congresses but this is the first time that such an event has been held in La Paz.

The event helped highlight the region’s need to broaden its project management

horizons in all areas including knowledge, available tools and latest techniques.

Addressing those needs will optimize return on investments of public sector projects,

which is where most of the economic movement is generated in La Paz.

During the first day of the seminar were 4

hands-on workshops in which case

studies were developed on: “how to

manage projects small”, “Quality and

leadership in projects”, “ISO 21500” and

“Effective Communications on projects”.

The participants were very active and

motivated by the techniques of "learning

by doing" used by the facilitators.

According to Cristian Soto, one of the

workshop leaders and one of the PMI

Santa Cruz chapter’s directors: “the

audience got involved in the debates,

shared ideas, arrived at conclusions

and all the while found enjoyment in

the learning process.

On the event’s second and final day,

attendees participated in five Master

Conferences that focused on the three

attributes today’s PM needs to have:

1. Understanding of the business so that the project compliments the corporate strategy

2. Technical expertise in Project Management

3. Leadership and interpersonal skills

All of the presenters focused on these attributes and demonstrated how these

abilities translate into more effective project management.

Luis Sasmay, PMI Antofagasta Chapter Past President

stated “Project Leaders don’t administer just projects but

instead administer the company’s portfolio”.

Gustavo Albera, PMI Nuevo Cuyo

Past President shared: ”What a client

wants or asks for, is not necessarily

always in the best interest of the project.

That gap is always potentially conflictive and must be

managed as a critical risk factor. However, all projects are an

opportunity to help, put things into context and perspective,

and transform the preconceived attitudes of a given region.”

Cecilia Boggi, PMI Mentor

Latinoamérica: “75% of organizations consider leadership

skills as the single most important factor in managing

complex projects.”

Cecilia was also interviewed by a national newspaper. For

Eduardo

Otalora,

Leader of the

PMI

Community in

La Paz

quotes: “Eight

out of ten

projects that are carried out in our country fail to stay on budget and/or are

completed on time. Neither universities nor private companies have developed

programs that will rectify this situation.”

ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

PMI’s Santa Cruz Chapter has a vision for the future and that vision is to inspire

managers to become leaders that achieve sustainable results and thereby transform

the limitations of our country into opportunities. We are certain that initiatives like this

two day event will help us achieve these goals and integrate our region.
