WINNERS

Donated in memory of Ronald (Ron) Gregory Oldham.

Ronald joined the Club on 1st November 1932 as an

Associate. He served as the Club’s first Patron, for five (5) seasons until his death in April 1937.

Ronald Gregory Oldham (1867-1937) was born 11 December 1867 at Ballarat, Victoria.

With depression in Victoria, Ronald came to Western Australia as a builder but also seeking gold, initially in the Pilbara Region and then at Coolgardie.

His older brother Charles Oldham followed him to WA

and commenced practice in Fremantle in 1897, becoming a high profile architect with significant buildings constructed at Fremantle and Perth.

Charles’ success encouraged Ronald to enter into private architectural practice, also at Fremantle.

By 1907 Ron Oldham had built a new residence for

his family at 5 Saladin Street, Swanbourne. He was to reside in the western Claremont area for the rest of

his life, designing a good number of Federation-style residences that grace the elevated areas of the area

formerly known as ‘Osborne’ – notably in Parry Street, Congdon Street and Hillside Avenue. One of these

sprawling bungalows was built for his own family and in 1913 they moved to Cloverly at 3 Windsor Street,

Claremont - just near the Swanbourne railway station.

At sixty years of age Ron was involved in a serious accident when he was run over by a motor car in

August 1928, but he recovered sufficiently to continue in practice until 1936. Oldham died 10 April 1937 at

his residence Cloverly in Windsor Street.

Ron Oldham was one of many architects from eastern Australia who proceeded to WA in search of work in the 1890s, had families, founded businesses and remained on the western seaboard. His projects often being of a smaller scale, Ron’s design portfolio is less recognised than that of his brother Charles.

After Long Illness

After an illness extending over many months, Mr. Ronald Gregory Oldham, A.R.I.A.,

died at his home in Swanbourne, yesterday. Deceased for many years practised his

architectural profession in Fremantle, where he was held in high esteem by all sections of the

community. The late Mr. Oldham, who was aged 70 years, was also well known in Masonic circles.

ARCHITECT'S DEATH.

The Late Mr. R G. Oldham.

Mr. Ronald Gregory Oldham, who had practised as an architect in Fremantle for the last 40 years, died at his

home in Swanbourne on Saturday at the age of 70. years. He is survived by a widow and two sons.

The late Mr. Oldham. who was the son of a Ballarat schoolmaster, came to Western Australia with his

brother, the late Mr. Charles L. Oldham, in 1892. He took part in the gold rush and in 1893 walked from Perth to Coolgardie. He was appointed a Justice of

the Peace in 1899 and was Mayor of North Fremantle in 1902. In his young days the late Mr. Oldham was a well-known footballer and oarsman in this State and Victoria. For the last 35 years he bad played bowls

with the Fremantle Bowling Club.

Competitors must be qualified to start by having competed in at least three 400 m swims at Points Races during the season of events as outlined in Clause 2.1 of these By Laws.

There are several possibilities for the origin of the Kirby Cup:

At a Swanbourne Surf Club meeting held at Allen Park on December 19

th 1932, it was moved by Mr Cyril

Franetovich and seconded by Mr Ossie Gallon that the Tradespeople of Swanbourne be asked to subscribe towards a Cup.

At this time Mr A Kirby resided at 17 Cross St in Claremont (now Swanbourne), near Allen Park and may have sponsored the Kirby Cup directly or via his business.

Mr Albert Kirby was the proprietor of Hummerston’s Garage & Service Station, Cottesloe and he may have been approached as a local business owner. It is not known if Mr Albert Kirby is the same person as Mr A Kirby of 17 Cross St.

At the Executive Meeting held at Allen Park on November 22

nd 1933, it was moved Mr Alf Cook and

seconded by Mr Harry Nuttall that accounts at Kirby’s and Claremont Printery be paid.

Kirby’s were a watchmakers and jewellers that supplied sporting trophies. It is therefore likely that the Club had sourced trophies from Kirby’s and they may have sponsored the Kirby Cup.

It is not known if there is any link between Kirby’s with Mr A Kirby of 17 Cross St. Caris Bros. was another jeweller that supplied sporting trophies and may be associated with the Caris Cup.

Other possibilities are Mr. Alfred C. Kirby, chartered accountant or Mrs. Kirby president of the R.S.L. State Executive Women's Auxiliary, Fremantle Auxiliary. Both were active in Perth around this time although no connection with the Club or surf lifesaving is known.

confusion exists as for the Presidents’ Cup over A Walsh and P Walsh. The Vice Captain for 1942/43 Season is listed as P Walsh whereas for the 1943/44 Season is listed as A Walsh. A Walsh is listed as gaining his Bronze Medallion on 31

st January 1943. Pat Walsh was a member of the 1945/46 and 1946/47 Champion Rescue and

Resuscitation teams and is listed as Pat Walsh in team photographs but referred to as A. Walsh in the 14th Annual

Report 1945/46 and some newspaper articles. It is suspected that they are the same person. 4The Cup is (poorly) engraved ‘1942 H. Thorn’ but Aquatics in W.A. refers to F. Thorn as the winner which is

9 Oldham Memorial Cup is engraved ’1981 J. Russell’. The 48th Annual Report 1981 names John Russell as the

winner of the Cup. Therefore it is John Russell (J Russell Jnr) not his father Jack Russell (J Russell Snr). 10

Oldham Memorial Cup is engraved ‘1995 M. Gerus, 1995 M. Silverstone’ (two separate lines). The 63rd Annual Report 1996 names Mike Silverstone and Mark Gerus as does the 1996 Annual Dinner and Presentation Night programme. The Race Secretary’s report in the minutes of the Beach Committee of 6

th February 1996 states that

John Copp won Long Run Cup, Mark Gerish (misspelt) won ¾ mile swim. Both not eligible, winners to be announced at Annual Dinner. Therefore unclear why Mark Gerus’s name still appears on trophy and in Annual Report as it is not considered there was a dead heat and Mike Silverstone has been named as the eligible winner. Mark Gerus was an Associate Member for the 1995/96 season only. 11

Oldham Memorial Cup is engraved ‘1985 R. Bosworth’. The 52nd Annual Report 1985 lists Ric Buist (and confusingly the 1984 Winner Phil Gallagher). Ross Bosworth also won the F.E. Ford Cup and Ric Buist the Caris Cup in 1985, so presumably the wrong name was entered for the double winner (they both have the same initials). 12

Oldham Memorial Cup is engraved ‘2000 D. Clarke’ and is therefore 2000 represents the year the Cup race was held, not the season in which it was held, as it is out of sequence with the preceding and following engravings. 13

December Newsletter 1986 states: “Trophy Winners - 3/4 mile Cup - Congratulations to Eugenie Nicolandis on winning the 1200 metre swim. Eugenie was the only female in the race out of a field of 30 so her victory must have been ever so sweet.”. However the 54th Annual Report 1987 states B. Jones as the winner and the Oldham Memorial Cup is engraved ‘1987 B. Jones’. Eugenie Nicolandis is listed as a Senior Member and gained her Bronze Medallion during this season. It would be another seven seasons until there was a female winner of the Oldham Memorial Cup. Colin Cook was Race Secretary and John Stringfellow wrote the newsletter in 1986.

Life-Savers

On Sunday, February 11 the Swanbourne Surf Life Saving Club will hold an 880yds, open handicap for a cup presented by the president of the club (Mr. H. A. Sharp), and nominations should be lodged with the handicappers, care of Mr. R. Stainthorpe, Wood-street Swanbourne. The club proposes holding a gala day on February 18, starting at 11 am., when heats will be run. The official opening is fixed for 2 pm. and an interesting programme will be provided. On March 4, a three-quarter mile open handicap swim for the Kirby Cup will be raced, and nominations, which close on February 11, should be left with the handicappers, care of the secretary. Events for to-day include 100yds. point races for juniors and seniors, and 100yds. beach sprints, also for both grades; carnival practice, and special bronze training. No. 2 patrol will be on duty to-day, and patrols 3 and 4 are requested to act on Saturday and Sunday next respectively.

Surf Life-Saving.

Gala Day at Swanbourne.

Under the patronage of the Nedlands Road Board the Swanbourne Surf Life-Saving Club will hold a gala on February 1. The heats will begin at 11 a.m. with an adjournment for lunch at 12.30. The official opening will take place at 2 p.m. An interesting and amusing programme has been arranged.

The race for the President's Cup, an open handicap over 880 yards will take place next Sunday. On March 4 the three-quarter mile handicap for the Kirby Cup will take place. Nominations will close with the handicapper on February 11. The present ambition of the club is a strong double-ended boat to guard the beach.

Swanbourne Club.

The following events will be held on Sunday by the Swanbourne Surf Club: 220 yards club surf championship (senior and junior and 100 yards belt championship (senior and junior). The beach sprint championship will be held at a future date. Tests will be held for the beach relay team to compete at the Bunbury carnival the following week, and members who are desirous of inclusion in this event are requested to be present.

The junior bronze team must report for training next Tuesday night. On March 11 the race for the Kirby cup over a distance of three quarters of a mile will be held.

Owing to the postponement of the State Carnival at Scarboro to the 17th March, the Kirby Cup has been altered to March 24th 1935.

Swanbourne Club.

For the carnival to be held at Scarborough beach, a motor bus will leave Dixon's tearooms, at the comer of Servetus and Wood streets, Swanbourne, at 8.45 a.m. tomorrow, for the convenience of members of the Swanbourne Surf Life-saving Club, which has chartered the vehicle. It is expected to pass the Swanbourne railway station about 9 a.m.

During the week-end, voluntary patrols will operate at Swanbourne.

On Sunday week at 11 a.m. the club will conduct its final event tor the season — a three quarter mile handicap ocean swim for the Kirby Cup, which was won last year by M. Goff.

The Swanbourne Club will hold a general meeting of members this evening at the rooms. Allen Park, at 8 o'clock. Members are advised that several matters of importance will be brought up for discussion. Yesterday morning the annual mile race for the Kirby Cup was conducted when 21 members faced the starter. After swimming on excellent race in practically calm water, M. Goff proved too strong and won comfortably. Result: M. Goff, 1; J. Lynam, 2; A. Cook, 3; K. Nunn, 4.

Swanbourne Club.

The annual three-quarter mile ocean swim for members of the Swanbourne Surf Club took place yesterday morning and competitors were faced with a very choppy sea and a hard swim for the Kirby Cup. Twenty starters took part and an interesting tussle took place, honours finally going to A. Young, who was closely followed by B. Brennan and T. Colvin.

Fastest time went to the veteran competitor. H. Newby, who filled fifth place. At the close of the race the donor presented the cup to Young and complimented him 'on his success.

In the afternoon the Juniors fought for the junior beltman's title of the club. A. Foster won the final with J. Lynam second and D.Kemp third

Surf Life-Saving.

Swanbourne's Annual Reunion.

The Swanbourne Surf Life-saving Club held its reunion dinner, social and trophy night at St. Philip's Hall, Cottesloe, on Thursday night. Mr. O. Gallon in submitting the toast of the local governing bodies, referred to the support given to the club by the Nedlands Road Board, and expressed the thanks of the club to the board. Mr. W. G. Kensitt (deputy chairman of the board) and Mr. J. C. Smith, a member of the board, replied. They pointed out that because of the club's good work on the beach the board would give consideration to any request submitted to it by the club during the forthcoming season.

The Surf Life-Saving Association was complimented upon its progressive policy by Mr. R. Claybrook and in reply Mr. L. P. Gadsdon (president) congratulated the club on its successes during the past season.

Members stood in silence in memory of the association's two vice-patrons, Sir Talbot Hobbs and Mr. L. W. Le Querne, who had died during the season

The toast of the president (Mr. J. Allen) was proposed by Mr. Smith and honoured enthusiastically.

Following the dinner, a social and dance was held when trophies won during the past season were presented. Mr. J. Lyne, senior vice-president of the Cronulla Surf Life-Saving Club, of Sydney, who is visiting Western Australia, made a brief call and congratulated the club on its past successes.

Club Activities.

A 16-year-old new junior member of the Swanbourne club won the Kirby cup in excellent style yesterday morning. It was a three-quarter-mile handicap race and he was able to keep off the fast finishing scratch marker, H. Newby, who gained second place and fastest time. T. Colvin was placed third.
