From the Pastor’s Desk...

If I were to give you the chance to complete the state-ment, “Easter is…” this Lenten season, what would you put in the blank? It’s really not a quiz, though in one sense, it is a test for us all; especially if we claim the name of Christian. What would your answer be?

In regard to the above question, one scripture has spoken to my own heart in the past as I have re-read the Easter story as record in Luke’s Gospel. In Luke 23:42 we read this simple yet profound request, “Then he said, Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom.” To the thief ’s request, the Master says, “I tell you the truth this day you will be with me in paradise.”

What an amazing verse. First, it reminds us that even in the eleventh hour so to speak – at the very last mo-ment – for this criminal, Christ became a life giver in a sea of troubles; big troubles. To put it simply, there’s al-ways hope in Christ for the soul willing to come hum-bly and believe in Christ for whatever the need in that person’s life – the humble faith of this thief changed eternity for his soul’s sake. Secondly, here again I’m challenged by the character of Christ on the cross still ministering to the lost through love, mercy, forgiveness that only he could show.

I find forgiveness a hard journey ... then I look at the road that led to Calvary. It was no less. The road to Calvary was very difficult, but necessary for us.

A few years back I went to visit a friend in the hospi-tal who was suffering with a rare disease that brought on paralysis. One thing that blessed me the most about that visit was that he had a picture of his then little son hanging up above his bed (where he could see him with little effort). All he had to do was move his eyes to focus in on this child. He couldn’t even talk at the time, so I had to read his lips as he told me that he loved his son so very much ... I just took a chance and assumed that the picture was hanging there for hope, inspira-tion, and for a life beyond that hospital bed invested in something that matters most to him – a reason beyond himself to live!

May we do no less in our own lives as we look to the One True Son who is no longer on the cross, no longer in a cold grave, but risen indeed ... Christ has died, Christ was buried, Christ is Risen today!

Now it’s time for those who have ears to hear when you are asked to fill in the blank, “Easter is…?” What will you put in the blank? If you’ve never known the risen Savior, to you this year, Easter may be no more than eggs, beautiful flowers, and possibly new clothes. But for those who receive Christ, Easter is love beyond measure. Easter is mercy. Easter is forgiveness. Easter is a holy mystery, so let us come with great expectation as we share together in this month in celebration of this unimaginable historical holy event!

Christ is Risen indeed!

For the Kingdom,Pastor Kevin

Easter is... “Jesus remember me...”

Saturday, March 19 6 p.m. Family Life Center

Plan to attend the free showing of the movie War Room, which will be shown from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 in the Family Life Center.

Victories don’t come by accident ... Prayer really is a powerful weapon. The award-winning creators of Fireproof and Courageous bring a movie of humor and heart that explores the power that prayer can have on marriages, parenting, careers, friendships and every other area of our lives.

Feel free to invite your friends and family. We challenge and encourage you to pray for someone to give the ticket on the first page of this newsletter to and invite them to see the movie.

These orange vinyl signs will be placed around Springville to promote our “War Room” event! They also help promote our new website, lovethe14141.com, which will have additional informa-tion about the event.

If you live in a high trafficked area and wouldn’t mind having a sign in your yard, contact Pastor Kevin or Luke Skura. And of course, any additional help you can give in promoting this event would be greatly appreciated!

Chili Cookoff & Pie Action

Church Renovations

Page 8: First Fruits — March 2016

Years ago when the Finance Team intro-duced the Chili cook off and Pie Auction, I must admit, I was skeptical that any-one would want to eat those two selec-tions together in the same evening. But here we are, nine of-ferings later, and still going strong!

Since the New Mortgage Fund is holding it's own, the Finance Team was gracious enough to let the Mission Team take over this fundraiser this year to benefit the Upper New York's Africa 360 initiative.

We praise the Lord that so many you, who have helped us pay for the “new building” over the last 15 years, were also there on Jan. 31 to help us reach others who are in need beyond our doors! Thanks to our chili makers, pie bakers, taste testers and voters, a total of $1,360 for Africa 360 will be presented by Pas-tor Kevin at May's 2016 Annual Conference. Make sure you look for the display to gain a little more insight concerning the Africa 360 initiative. Or visit www.unyumc.org/mission/africa-360.

Mission Moments

Last year I was tremendously blessed to be part of a preaching/teaching ministry team to Uganda for eight days.

This year, I will not be able to be part of the team going to a region further north where there are great physical and spiritual needs, though I still support the efforts of the team that is going finan-cially and prayerfully.

Their mission this year is to minister in a region where Jo-seph Kony used to wreak hav-oc. If you have never seen the documentary video, An Un-conventional War, produced by The Sentinel Group, the team highly recommend that you do so to gain an understanding of the spiritual ground they will be ministering on.

One option is to go to: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/anunconventionalwar and watch the trailer. You can also Google “The Unconventional War” to find other trail-ers. The film can be rented online for $5. It would be a worthwhile investment.

I realize this is not a mission outreach that our local church has chosen to sponsor, though it is one that I personally support and simply want to offer anyone a chance to support prayerfully and with a one time financial gift if the Lord so moves you. If you are interested, please contact the office on how you can support the team this year while they are in the country from April 28 to May 7.

Thank you for your consideration. Blessings, Pastor Kevin

Monthly collection tosupport Dan and Miranda Vaccaro

Beginning the first Sun-day of March and continuing through the first Sunday of June, our congregation will be taking up a monthly spe-cial collection which will be designated to help support Dan and Miranda Vaccaro.

You may remember that they are missionaries, whom the Lord called this past Au-gust to serve at the Malawi Campus of the African Bible College.

Miranda is the daughter of Bill Skura and Sue Putney, and the sister of Luke Sku-ra. Please be in prayer for the Vaccaros and the Skuras and be watching for the "grey bucket" each first Sunday of the month.

A big THANK-YOU to all of you who helped bake or assemble the Val-entine care boxes that we send out to our college students and our Nursing Home residents. A total of 18 packages were mailed and we have heard back from some mighty satisfied recipients!

Thank you for helping to make Valentine’s boxes

Library CornerHere are 4 new books in our church library for this month. The two on the left are nonfiction and are for those who

want more “intellectual” or nonfiction books in our library. In the past, these kind of books were not well read so the library leadership is watching the response to these books. The two books listed on the right are fiction, which have been well received by our readership in the past.

Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God

by Timothy KellerPrayer is the only entry way into genuine

self-knowledge. It is also the main way we experience deep change-the reordering of our loves. Prayer is how God gives us so many of the unimaginable things he has for us. Indeed, prayer makes it safe for God to give us many of the things we most desire. It is the way we know God, the way we fi-nally treat God as God. Prayer is simple, the key to everything we need to do and be in life. We must learn to pray. We have to.

A challenging read for anyone but so many nuggets of truth! This book ties in nicely with the pastor’s sermons on prayer. Timothy Keller is one of the most popular authors of our times.

Fool’s Talk: Recovering the Art of Christian Persuasion by Os Guinness

In our post-Christian context, public life has become markedly more secular while private life is infinitely more diverse. Yet many Christians still rely on cookie-cutter approaches to evangelism and apologet-ics. Most of these methods assume that people are open, interested and needy for spiritual insight when increasingly most people are not. Our urgent need, then, is for the capacity to persuade – to make a convincing case for the gospel to people who are not interested in it.

In his magnum opus, Os Guinness of-fers a comprehensive presentation of the art and power of cre-ative persuasion. Christians have often relied on proclaiming and preaching, protesting and picketing. But we are strikingly weak in persuasion – the ability to talk to people who are closed to what we are saying. Actual persuasion requires more than a one-size-fits-all approach. “Jesus never spoke to two people the same way and neither should we.’”

A Thousand Shall Fallby Andrea Boeshaar

A Civil War novel, this is the first book of the Shenandoah Val-ley saga.

In the autumn of 1864, spirited Carrie Ann Bell is searching for her runaway sister. Disguised as a Yankee soldier, she stumbles into a skirmish near Front Royal, and instead of her sister, she finds trouble.

A popular author for many!

Room for Hopeby Kim Vogel Sawyer

One day a deputy arrives with three young children and announces that her husband and wife have been killed and she now has his secret family to raise. Can she forgive her husband’s betrayal and love them the way God does? In a desperate time can Neva find forgiveness for a grievous wrong – and make room for hope?

And when they did not find them, they dragged Jason andsome brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out “These who

have turned the world upside down have come here too.”— Acts 17:6

Workers in southern Mexico built a church in 1564, thinking the area would be heavily populated. Unfortunately, a plague dev-astated the region and the church was abandoned. In 1966, a dam was built, and the resulting lake covered the building and hid it from view. Recently a drought caused water levels to drop and the church reappeared out of the waters like a revitalized shrine. Soon, however, the waters will rise and the church will again dis-appear beneath its murky waves.

The true Church of Jesus Christ will never be overwhelmed by the world. The waters may swirl around us, but the Lord has prom-ised to build His Church and keep it strong until he returns.

One thing must be avoided at all costs. We mustn’t let the world seep into the Church. When we let the world dilute our Gospel and water down our values, we’ll disappear from sight. Let’s keep the Church holy — and wholly committed to Scripture.

The chief danger of the church today is that it is trying to get on the same side as the world, instead of trying to turn the world upside down.

Lay Leader’s CornerWith all the changes happening in our church, I found this

article by Dr. David Jeremiah to be a perfect fit for this month:

The Unsinkable Church

We had a great turnout for the district’s disciple learning classes. I heard nothing but great com-ments. Classes were full as I found out the hard way. There will be more offered again in the near future; expand your ministry and plan to attend. I’ll keep you posted.

Thank you for all you do as church volunteers — your time, work, effort does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. Service not for money but for love.

Thank you, Tom

A preacher was explaining to his congrega-tion how the new sound system had come to be.

“The microphone and wiring were paid for by the church,” he said, “and the loudspeaker was donated

by Mr. Thomas in memory of his wife.”
