We believe every UNT student has the potential to succeed. We also know that the transition to college can often be difficult as you begin to navigate a new environment where you are now responsible for all of your decisions—both positive and negative. Part of our responsibility is to help you shape your college experience in a way that sets you up for success. You are an important member of our university community and we want to make sure you, too, feel like an integral member of it. To help you start on the right foot, all new freshmen will be required to participate in First Flight, UNT’s official welcome week program. First Flight consists of a series of events all geared toward starting your first semester on the right foot. Ultimately, by the end of First Flight, we want you to feel prepared, have a sense of what a healthy college lifestyle looks like, feel connected to the university community, and already be thinking about your future! All new freshmen must be checked in to First Flight and on campus by Sunday, August 21 at 4:00pm for the First Flight Kick-Off. Once First Flight kicks-off, regardless of if you live on campus or will be commuting to campus, you should plan to spend the entire week at UNT. ORIENTATION DETAILS

ORIENTATION LENGTHOrientation is a 3-day experience, and students are required to stay the night on campus. Students and families should plan to arrive no later than 3:00pm on Day 1* of their orientation session and depart no earlier than 5:00pm on Day 3 of their session.*Students needing to test for the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) are encouraged to test at a location near their hometown before orientation. TSI testing is not part of the orientation schedule. Please visit the Learning Center website for more information: learningcenter.unt.edu/texassuccessinitiative and also see page 8 of this book.

ORIENTATION HOUSINGPart of the orientation experience is staying in the residence halls. Orientation participants in sessions 1-7 will reside in Kerr Hall. Students attending orientation are required to spend both nights in the residence hall. Housing is not provided during session 8. Students attending session 8 will move into their fall residence hall home before their orientation session begins. If you are a commuter student, during session 8 you will be expected to commute to and from campus each day for orientation. Commuter students attending sessions 1-7 will be expected to stay in the orientation residence hall.

ORIENTATION FEEThe student orientation fee is $188 for students who register by May 1, and $208 after that date. This fee is non-refundable. This fee includes lodging, meals (dinner on Day 1 through lunch on Day 3), materials, t-shirt, staffing, administrative costs, and year-long orientation activities.

Although students who graduate from an Early College High School (ECHS) can enter the university with a significant number of transfer credits, UNT requires these graduates to participate in a 3-day freshman orientation program. We believe this best sets you up for success at UNT. Because your needs are slightly different, we encourage you to attend a special meeting prior to the orientation welcome to help better prepare you for your orientation experience. This meeting will take place at 1:30pm on the first day of your orientation. We encourage you to check in to orientation at 1:00pm and then attend this meeting. The location of the meeting will be available to you at check-in.

EAGLE CONNECT EMAILEagleConnect is the UNT email system for all students. One of your first steps in starting at UNT should be setting up your EagleConnect email account so you don’t miss out on important messages about your college experience. All campus offices will correspond with you through this email platform, so it is your responsibility and in your best interest to check your account regularly. Please visit eagleconnect.unt.edu for more information on accessing EagleConnect.

Eagle Alert allows UNT administrators to quickly contact campus community members by phone about emergency situations affecting the safety and wellbeing of people on and around the UNT campus. The system sends voice messages to the phones, including cell phones, of all active faculty, staff, and students. The system can also send text messages to cell phones if you grant the system permission to do so before hand.

MATH PLACEMENT EXAMThe Department of Mathematics will not place students into courses at or above the level of Calculus I (Math 1710) without prerequisite credit. Some examples of prerequisite credit include: scores of 3 or better on the Calculus AB or BC Advanced Placement Exam, a score of 5 or better on the higher-level IB mathematics exam, and dual credit in mathematics courses with Texas Common Course Numbers: Math 2312 or 2412. If you would like to take Calculus I as your initial course and do not have prior prerequisite credit, you will be required to take the placement assessment. If your major requires Calculus I, then you are strongly encouraged to take the placement assessment.1. You are expected to take the online Pearson MyMathTest (MMT) prior to coming to your orientation session. Doing this is important for students majoring in Math, Engineering, Science, Economics (BS) and who need to start with Calculus I (Math 1710) or a Business major who needs Business Calculus (Math 1190).2. You will find how to access the test and other important information about the placement assessment on the Math Department’s website. Go to: www.math.unt.edu, under ‘Academics’ select ‘Math Placement’.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE PLACEMENT AND EXAM FOR CREDIT

Students taking the Foreign Language Placement Exam may earn up to 12 hours of foreign language credit. The exam may be taken only once per language. Many degrees at UNT require some level of proficiency in a foreign language. Review your degree requirements at catalog.unt.edu to see if a foreign language is required. There is a $53 fee for the placement test.Exams for placement and/or credit are offered in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. The foreign language placement/credit exam will be available each orientation session. In addition, the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers proficiency exams for languages not offered at UNT. For more information, contact the Department of World Languages and Literatures at 940-565-2404.

MUSIC MEETING DURING ORIENTATIONAll students who are not music majors but are interested in being involved with the College of Music during their time at UNT should plan to attend the music session during orientation to find out more about music minors, music classes for non music majors, auditioning for any of the performance groups, and the possibility of taking private lessons for the fall semester. We will also have information on applying and auditioning to become a music major available at this meeting. This session will be the morning of day 3. Students who have successfully auditioned for the College of Music do not attend this session.Anyone considering auditioning for a band, choir, or orchestra should attend this session. The information session will be available each orientation session. You will receive a schedule with specific times and locations at check in.

Living on campus during your first year at UNT, while it is required, is a great benefit to you as a student. Here are some things that tend to happen for residents of UNT Housing: >> Meet people that live around you and become part of the on-campus community >> Find opportunities to get involved through campus events and student organizations >> Be in close proximity to your classes and campus resources that promote academic success >> Earn a higher GPA than your off-campus counterparts (we think you should study, too) >> Get the feeling that UNT is the place to call home as you complete your degreeUNT Housing is here to assist freshmen with the adjustment to being in college, new found freedom that comes with living independently and becoming an engaged member of the Mean Green Nation! The application for housing and the ability to edit preferences on an existing application is accessible through your eHousing account. Room assignments are issued beginning in May for those students with a complete application. Once assigned, the ability to change application preferences or room assignments is extremely limited.Mean Green Move-In, the day the residence halls open for the Fall 2016 semester, is August 21, 2016. Housing will open its doors at 8:00am and there will be volunteers on hand from across the UNT community through the early afternoon to help you move in to your room. Come early, move in and get ready for the start of First Flight Week.
