First Family News come up with after reading the opening paragraph of this sen- tence. How different would those two lists be? What does that mean for today’s church? Have we become so busy making sure that our church experience meets some sort of worldly standard that we’ve stopped keeping track of God’s standards for His church? And if that is the case, Lord have mercy on us! So let me ask you again, what qualities are necessary for a church to have in order for you to belong? What if you dedi- cated yourself to making FBC Grandview look more like what the New Testament says it ought to look like in whatever way you could, be it small or earth-shattering? Is it really enough for us in 2019 if we took Paul’s example and simply busied ourselves to, “know nothing among you except Christ and him crucified”? Enough “For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.” – 1 st Corinthians 2:2 If you were to create a list of the qualities of a good church for you and your family to attend, what would that list look like? If you’re like many church folks your list would likely include good, active programs for children, students, adults, and senior adults. You might also list good, encouraging preaching and/or solid small group and Sunday School teach- ing. Most of today’s church attendees would put high quality worship near the top of their lists. You would likely want the church to have a welcoming atmosphere and for the building itself to be clean and updated. You might want to know what kind of childcare the church offers during worship and if your child would be too old to attend the children’s church. You might even have preferences over the type of seating and temperature in the sanctuary, the length of the service itself, and the type of dress common amongst the congre- gation. Again, if you were to compose such a list, what would it look like? I hope you would include such things as a church that is loving to all people regardless of differences. Many of you would hopefully desire a church that be- lieves in strong evangelism. Would you include the quality of service to our community and caring for the least of these wherever God leads? Is an open and vulnerable community of people that share their faith lives, wins and losses, with each other something you would put on your list? What about prayer? Would you want the church you attend to be one that places a high value on prayer? Of course, there is Scripture as well. How would you want the church to which you belong relate to the Bible? Now, get out of your own head. If you were to sur- vey the pages of the New Testament, what would your list look like? In other words, what does the Holy Spirit tell us, through the pages of Scripture, ought to be the marks of a church body. If you have the time (which you do) and the willingness, I would encour- age you to do just that. Look through the New Testa- ment and write down a list of necessary church char- acteristics that you find in its pages. Let (True) Freedom Ring . . . As we

approach Independence Day, we celebrate the countless freedoms we enjoy as citi-zens of the United States of America. God has been so good to us, allowing us to live in freedom the vast majority of our world will never know. In years past, songwriters expressed their gratitude to God for His goodness to us in this. We find phrases

like these in patriotic songs we have enjoyed all of our lives: “America! America! God shed His grace on thee.”

“Our fathers’ God, to Thee, Author of liberty, to Thee we sing.”

“God bless America, land that I love.” “And this be our motto: ‘In God is our trust!’”

Decades ago, I was blessed to be able to sing such songs, pledge allegiance to our nation’s flag, and pray together in the classrooms where I also learned the “Three R’s.” I miss those days. I mourn the fact that so many have used their God-given freedom as Americans to pull our nation away from such godly thoughts and practices. In scripture we find calls to avoid such abuses of freedom:

“You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather serve one

another in love.” (Galatians 5:13) “Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a

cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.” (I Peter 2:16)

Most young people attending our schools in recent decades have not known the blessings which we were able to experience as students. We all share the blame for their being so deprived. Ever so gradually, we have casually watched as our nation has drifted further and further away from its spiritual moorings. Still, God’s Word makes it plain that it’s not too late to reverse that trend:

“If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive

their sin and will heal their land.” (II Chronicles 7:14)

Shall we accept His invitation?

We as a church have a wonderful oppor-tunity to pray for our students who are attend-ing summer camp at Latham Springs during the first week of July. My prayer throughout camp season consists of asking God to make students aware of their need for Him, and for students to have tender and receptive hearts

to His truth. So often students feel the pressure to make an emotional decision to follow Jesus while at camp, but on returning home go right back to the way things were before they left for camp. My prayer is that whether a student is just learning about who Jesus is, or has known Him for a while, that they would all have a desire to live authentic lives of obedience after they leave camp. For them to see clearly that when we love Him and submit to His Holy Spirit's control over our lives, we see Him transform us from the inside out, day by day. What a miracle His work of sanctification is! That is what we want for our students. I invite you to join me in prayer, and ask you to go to the Father and pray the following:

- For lost students to surrender their lives to Jesus - For redeemed students to grow in their love for Jesus and His word, and walk in holiness - For sponsors to be filled with love, patience, and truth - For Jamin Roller, Camp Speaker; Jarryd Foreman, Worship Team; DBU, Recreation; Latham Springs Leadership and Staff - For everyone our students and sponsors come into contact with to exhibit the fruit of the Spirit - For safety, wisdom, and peace - For students to have a burden for their friends who don’t know Jesus - For our students to have a desire to serve and a willing- ness to put others first

Without prayer, this week of camp has the potential to just be another event on the calendar. But we want life change, amen? May we be willing to go to the Lord on our beloved students' behalf.

Keep shining for Jesus,

to Plan for Christmas!

Help us reach kids all over the world by donating gift filled shoeboxes or plastic containers through Operation Christmas Child. This year our church family is being challenged to meet a goal of at least 20+ gift filled boxes each month between now and mid November. Goodbye June! Thank you, thank you to everyone who helped with VBS!!! What a great week! I’m so grateful for all the teachers and the time they spent preparing for the week. Thank you, everyone, that cooked and cleaned to make sure we had food and a clean space to eat it in! Thank you, everyone, for giving your energy and showing the love of Christ to children this week! Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped go door to door in our com-munity inviting children to VBS!! I hope we will all continue to dive deeper into God’s word through the summer. Can’t you tell I love VBS? It is one of the greatest joys in my life to be able to organize and put together a week for children to come in and hear in a special way how much God loves them and wants to know them! Kidz Camp is coming in a few short days. The dates are July 11-15 at Riverbend Retreat Center. It is going to be a great week for the kids! They will have Bible study each day, as well as a multitude of activities to enjoy. Parents, please note we must do a lice check before leaving for camp! We need children to be brought at 2:30pm on the 11th. Please remember a parent or guardian must drop the child off! We will return on the 15th at 10:30am! Looking forward to an amazing week! Please start praying for our kids and sponsors!! While your kids are around for summer, I hope you will take opportunities to encourage each other by digging into the Word together! If you need some ideas about how to get started on family devotions or just have Bible talks, check out our family Connection Center! We have some great resources there to help you out! We want you to succeed in your journey to be the spir-itual leader of your household! I know lots of the kids have summer time sports events and activities. I would love to come and support your kids at those event and activities! Please let me know when they are happen-ing and I will do my best to be there!

Dallas Willard describes growth in our Christian life as, “Spiritual formation re-fers to the Spirit-driven process of form-ing the inner world of the human self in such a way that it becomes like the inner being of Christ himself.” Sometimes, I have heard spiritual growth explained as

only happening through reading our Bible daily and praying. Also, Christian growth involves joining a Sunday School class or a Life Group and being involved in group discipleship. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus says, "Whoever wants to be my dis-ciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Spiritual growth is about learning to be honest with ourselves and with God. Spiritual formation calls us to be open to what is really happening in our lives and seeing God’s hand in that, living through any pain and struggle that we might face and leaning on the provision of the Father to take us through it. Remember that definition I gave at the beginning of this article? Willard says that spiritual formation is growing our inner selves to be more like the inner self of Christ. In doing so, we are living in such a way that allows us to be honest with our fears and failures. Ultimately, our goal is to live like Christ. May we honestly and openly seek that this week.

Grace and Peace,

Joel
