Maybe I’m assuming too much though. When you think of a missionary what do you think of? Chances are, the first thing that pops into your mind probably isn’t a normal American Chris- tian sharing their faith with a co-worker. Even us adults still mainly see missions as something to which only “radical” Chris- tians are called. Can we agree that maybe we, just like the children at VBS, need to change our thinking in regards to missions? Let this be a reminder that you (yes, you!) can be a missionary . . . and you don’t even have to move or learn a new language in order to be one! You are around people every day that don’t know Jesus. You work with them, see them at your kids’ school and sporting events, serve alongside them in civic organizations, have them wait on you at restaurants, share meals with them at family get- togethers, and you may even live with one. God has given you the same call that he gave to Lottie Moon and the Apostle Paul, the call to make disciples of all nations. You have access to the same power that they did as well, the power of the Holy Spirit. Tap into that power! Live that calling! Be a missionary! In His Service, Everyday Missionaries “And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Luke 10:2) I’m writing these words just moments before I begin pre- paring my lesson for the mission rotation of Vacation Bible School. I always enjoy teaching about the importance of mis- sions, especially to a room full of children eager to learn. I can remember being in their shoes and hearing stories about mis- sionaries as a kid. I was amazed that people would leave eve- rything they ever knew, move to another part of the world, and learn a completely new language and culture to tell people about the Gospel of Jesus. One of my pastors growing up spent 10 years in Ecuador as a missionary, and I can still re- member several of the stories he shared with our church about his time there. There is something heroic about Christians who would take such risk and undergo such drastic life change in an effort to reach the lost. We revere international missionaries. Many of them reach near legendary status like Jim Elliot, William Carey, Saint Pat- rick, and of course Lottie Moon. We also support several with funds from our church like the Ducommuns in Papua, Arm- strong in Kenya, and the Bonds in Cananda. While we should celebrate individuals like these who have so radically given themselves over to the mission of Christ, we should also take a moment to remember that one does not have to move to another country to be a missionary. This is one of the basic truths that I share with VBS children every time I teach about missions. During Vacation Bible School, I will share with the children ways that they can be missionaries and tell other people about Jesus. We will talk about looking for ways to share God’s love with your family, friends, classmates, etc. I’m always impressed with the creativity of the answers that the children provide. Through the years, I’ve listened to some ideas that get me truly excited about what God is going to do in the lives of future gen- erations. Children get excited about sharing their faith through the talents and abilities that God has given them. My message that missions is for all Christians, not just those who move to another country, is only applicable to chil- dren though, right? I mean, surely adults already know that anyone can be used by God for his kingdom purposes, that it doesn’t take a superhero to be a missionary, and that all of us have the God-given responsibility to be on mission for Jesus. The Worship Choir’s on Break . . . As

of July 2, the Worship Choir is on their summer break. I am so appreciative of these faithful ones who get up early and come prepare to lead us in worship during our 8:30 morning worship hour every Sun-day, and I’m sure those of you who wor-ship with us at 8:30 each week are as well.

Most of our Worship Choir folks will tell you that they are not singers. This may or may not be true. It is much like a sin-gle tree saying, “I’m not a forest” or a single ray of evening sun saying, “I’m not a sunset.” By itself a tree or a ray of sun may not impress, but combining forces with other trees and rays of sun makes something special. This is how it is with Worship Choir members. Individually, we may not have a great deal to offer, but together we combine to bring something that is greater than the mere sum of its parts. I’m reminded once again of the apostle Paul’s great analo-gy in which he compares the local church to the human body. Individually, church members and parts of the human body are not all that functional—just as a toe, an eye, an ear, or a hand cannot do much by itself, so we as isolated church members cannot make much of an impact on the world around us. But united together as God has done it, the parts of the human body comprise the most amazing machine ever known. Similarly, united together and empowered by God’s indwelling Spirit, church members comprise a tremendously effective body of Christ. I believe the same principle applies to a Worship Choir. So, enjoy your break, Worship Choir members. You de-serve it. And, by the way, if any of the rest of you out there would like to bring your “joyful noise” to be a part of our group when we get back together in late August, we’d love to have you. Get in touch if you’d like to know more about when, where, and how you can get in on something that we feel is kind of spe-cial.

Volunteers are needed to help remove old mulch and replace it with new rubber mulch. The more hands we have to help, the quicker we will get done!

Wow, June was a blur! Thank you, thank you to everyone who helped with VBS!!! What a great week! I’m so grateful for all the teachers and dec-orators and the time they spent preparing for the week!! Thank you to every person who cooked and cleaned to make sure we had food and a clean space to eat it in! Thank you to each and every one, including our helpers, for giving your energy and showing the love of Christ to children this week! Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped go door to door in our community inviting children to VBS!! I hope we will all continue to dive deeper into God’s Word through the summer!! If you can’t tell, I love VBS!! It is one of the greatest joys in my life to be able to organize and put together a week for children to come in and hear in a special way how much God loves them, and wants to know them! Don’t forget that we still have some spots for kids camp! The dates are July 31st — August 4th at Riverbend Retreat Center in Glen Rose. It is going to be a great week for the kids to learn how to GLOW! They will have Bible study each day, as well as a multitude of activities to enjoy. If you have any ques-tions, please ask. I would love to talk to you about how your completed 3rd-5th grader can go to camp with us! If they have a friend that wants to go, let me know! The cost is $200 per camper! We do need paperwork turned in by July 9th! Need a registration form? Check in the church office, online at www.gvfbc.org, or with me. We are replacing our mulch in the playground! If you would like to help us clean out the playground mulch and replace it with new rubber mulch, we will be working on that Saturday, July 8th! Ask me for details! While your kids are around for summer, I hope you will take opportunities to encourage each other by digging into the word together. If you need some ideas about how to get started on family devotions or just have Bible talks, check out our family connection center. We have some great resources there to help you out. We want you to succeed in your journey to be the spir-itual leader of your household! I know lots of the kids have summer time sport events and activities. I would love to come and support your kids! Let me know when they are happening and I will do my best to be there! Ms. Amy

I think it is beneficial to sing songs that cause us to encounter the gospel mes-sage within the lyrics. After singing the song, I don’t want to leave with just catchy lyrics, but a deeper understanding of God’s love for us and the message of the cross. In the past couple of months,

we have been singing the song Mystery by Charlie Hall. The verses sing:

Sweet Jesus Christ my sanity Sweet Jesus Christ my clarity

Bread of heaven, broken for me Cup of salvation held up to drink

Jesus, Mystery

This song is a confession of the gospel message in many ways. It emphasizes the importance of the blood of Christ and the bread of Christ. When we gather together in worship, we are confessing the sacrifice of Christ and our reliance upon that sacri-fice for salvation. One of the reasons why this is a powerful song to sing with our entire congregation is that is does not try to make life cookie cutter or easy. It is an admittance that we don’t have answers to the difficulties and the messiness around us. It confesses that eve-rything is not clear and easy, but amidst the troubles and chaos, we find hope in knowing that Jesus is our true sanity and through Him we will find clarity. The beauty of the gospel is that we don’t have to come to it clean, pretty, and with all the answers. We come to the gospel messy, confused, and broken, and through the cross we find sanity in Christ, despite the chaos that abounds.

Grace and Peace,

Joel

JULY 16TH

The Cheerful Giver 6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap spar-ingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluc-tantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every

good work. 9 As it is written,

“He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”

10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the har-vest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. — 2 Corinthians 9:6-11, ESV
