Dear Brothers and Sisters In Christ: This past week has been an emotional week: visiting Darlene's Mother who is in declining

health, Saying goodbye to Bishop Lohrmann greeting our new Bishop Daniel Beaudoin. About 500 people attended the Service at St Mark Bowling Green. Some 70 pastors in the

opening procession. The Toledo Blade Sunday July 24 has a good article on the Installation. Through all of this I have been worried about our world why so much

violence and evil. What has happened to peace? Then I heard that the VBS focused on God as the Light of the World. So I thought about that. It's too easy to worry we ought to put things in God's Hands and teach about Jesus love and demonstrate by our daily lives that love is God's Way and should be our way. Jesus after all took all our pain suffering to the Cross died there instead of us Rose again to give us hope to hang on to so let us worship

the Lord Amen. Pastor Richard Weaver

Council News There was no council meeting held in July! Council will resume in August

Installation of Bishop Beaudoin

BOWLING GREEN — Fifty-one minutes into an installation ceremony Saturday, the Rev.

Daniel Beaudoin officially became bishop of the Northwestern Ohio Synod, one of 65

geographical areas in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The moment arrived

when Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton pronounced the words, “The office of bishop is now

committed to you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”

Bishop Eaton was presiding minister for the 1 p.m. service at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in

Bowling Green, and she had quoted Scripture, then asked a series of formal questions, to

each of which he answered, “I will, and I ask God to help me.”

She prayed over the new bishop, and then Bishop Marcus Lohrmann, who had been

synod bishop for 18 years, gave his successor a cross to wear and the bishop’s staff. Bishop

Lohrmann was caught up in emotion when giving the cross and said later it was because

of “the reality of wearing the cross; sometimes it means suffering, and it’s also Christ’s

promise to be with us … but finally, the good news is that through the cross we see a God

who, in Christ, is for us.” With his first official words in his new office, Bishop Beaudoin told

the congregation, “You are the light of the world because the light of Christ shines in you

and through you. So let that light shine in your pursuit of holiness, in your families, in our

congregations, our communities, and in God’s world. Let that light shine so that it may be

seen by others, and all might give glory to God.” In Bishop Eaton’s sermon, she preached

to Bishop Beaudoin: “There might be times when you doubt you have the strength to go

on. You don’t, but God gives us strength. It’s Christ’s strength in us.”

Asked before the service if he had a first task, Bishop-elect Beaudoin said, “What’s

happening in our country with race relations, I really think we need to spend some time

praying about that and talking with that. We really need — the church really needs — to

speak and be there.”

Bishop Eaton referred to the state of the world in her sermon.

“It’s a frightening place out there,” she said, “and I think that we’re feeling some of that

anxiety, some of that sense that, maybe, how can we ever be sure that we’re ever going

to come home at night with all the craziness that’s happening in the world? And I think for

some of us, probably those of us in the majority culture, we’re realizing some of the anxiety

that our brothers and sisters of color have known for all of their lives. “The world is an

unsafe and precarious and unpredictable place, and we live in a culture and a people

who want to have predictability and security and certainty, and we look for it in all kinds

of places where it will never be found and never be lasting,” Bishop Eaton said. She

compared that feeling to biblical Babylon, using verses from the book of Isaiah given in a

reading. Abdel-Wahab Soliman, at the installation service as a representative of the

Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, said, “It is always very good to cooperate, especially to

reduce the madness that’s going on in the world right now, and the violence.”

During his words of greeting, Bishop Daniel Thomas of the Roman Catholic Diocese of

Toledo said, “From one Bishop Daniel to another Bishop Daniel, blessings, grace, and

peace in the Holy Spirit.”

Bishop Thomas told The Blade before the service that Catholic-Lutheran relationships

between bishops have been close, and “Bishop Daniel and I are going to continue,

please God, that warm relationship.”

As an example of the interdenominational collaboration, Bishop Thomas said that with the

500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, led by Martin Luther, coming in 2017,

“We’re already working at various opportunities for different Catholic and Lutheran

parishes to come together in dialogue, so I think that’s an important note that we’ll move

forward toward.”

For the installation, the congregation filled the sanctuary, the balcony, the narthex or

entryway, and even the Family Life Center where the postinstallation reception would be

held and the service was shown on video.

Besides Lutherans from across the synod — including a group from the church Bishop

Beaudoin had served for the last 12 years, St. John’s in Stony Ridge — numerous Lutheran

pastors in vestments sat together. Guests from other area religions and denominations,

including Bishop Thomas, Mr. Soliman, and representatives from the Ohio Council of

Churches, the Moravian Church, the Reformed Church in America, the United Methodist

Church, also attended.

Bishop Aman Kinyunyu of the Dodoma Diocese in Tanzania was there, on his fifth trip to

the Northwestern Ohio Synod, and Ms. Evka Hlavati traveled from the synod’s partner

congregation in Serbia.

All five Lutheran bishops of the surrounding synods attended, including Bishop Suzanne

Dillahunt of the Southern Ohio Synod, who will work with Bishop Beaudoin as his mentor.

“I think Bishop Beaudoin will do just fine, so I’ll continue to touch base with him and make

sure that he’s doing A-OK,” she said.

“I graduated from bishop school with flying colors, [learned] the handshakes, I know all

that stuff,” Bishop Beaudoin had joked earlier.

After the ceremony, Bishop Eaton said, “God has provided a marvelous shepherd and

servant in Bishop Lohrmann, and we’re seeing the same wonderful thing with Bishop

Beaudoin. We’re very happy.”
