9. A walk I will remember It was a rainy evening. Usually calm blue sky today was covered with dark, black meanclouds ornamented with occasional thunders. I was staring out of window lost in my thoughts.Why cant I get anything right? Will I ever be happy? Why am I so lonely on the road to my brokendreams?? Is it raining or those are just my tears I see? Even the nature is angry and depressedlike me. Suddenly he came behind me, closed my eyes and said, why do u think u are lonely? Iam always there for you. Perhaps it was his presence that dried my tears and I said, No, I am allalone, I am useless. you see those clouds covering the sky; even my mind is clouded with darkthoughts. Nature and I both are depressed today. But unlike nature I cant express myself. I wasstill thinking when he said, Come, Lets take a walk. A walk!!!! At this time???? No, I wont. Irefused. Why not?? Are you scared? he said smiling, I promise it will be a walk you willremember. Lets go. We started walking in silence. I was angry and a bit scared and suddenly lighteningthundered, increasing my fear. As if reading my mind, he said, Never get scared of nature, honey.Its the most beautiful thing in the world if you just observe. I see nothing beautiful about thisstorm. Its just mud and water everywhere. Look at that tree over there. It is lonely just like me. Isaid angrily. Your eyes see what your mind thinks. He said, When I look at the tree I see awarrior facing storm bravely still holding his head high in the sky. And it is not all alone. Because ithas his roots, branches, leaves with it and all those make it what it is. You can never be lonelybecause you have yourself. You are right. His silent smile said everything. Rain had increased and it was darker but we kept walking. He was with me and I feltbetter. But I was unhappy and sad. Hey look there. His voice broke into my thoughts. A small boywas playing with his dog in mud and water unaware of surrounding. The dog shook his body andwater drops spread everywhere delighting the child. The boy hugged the dog and they startedplaying again. I was watching them with envy when he whispered in my ear, See they are soblissfully happy. Enjoying themselves without worry. If you learn to enjoy those small moments andlose yourself in joy you wont have to worry about anything. Dont forget those small momentswhile running behind the bigger ones. We went ahead and I saw an old leaf fallen on the ground covered with mud. He picked itup and said, You might see just an old leaf fallen on the ground but I see here the satisfaction ofcompleting the work, of living a good life. When the time came it fell down to give place for a newlife to develop leaving its mark there. Dont you think same thing happens in our life? We get olderand get replaced by new. We just have to make sure; we leave our mark in that work. Nature isalways trying to teach us something. Its up to you to see and learn. The sky was clearing and so was my mind. Rain had decreased and we started goingback when he showed me a rose plant. The roses were destroyed and petals scatteredeverywhere. A small bud was blooming trying to open its petals. The rain drop fell on it and it wasthe most beautiful thing I had seen. This time he asked me, what do you see? I searched for ananswer and I found it. I see one life destroyed in storm and still there is a new hope opening itseyes starting a new life. The raindrop fallen on the leaf is as beautiful as the one falling in shellturning to pearl. We dont always get best of the circumstances. Its up to us to make it the best. We had reached home. He smiled, ruffled my hair and turned to leave. Please dont go. I pleaded. I will always be present around you, honey. I am wind. You may not feel me but I willalways be there. Whenever you feel sad just close your eyes and I will be there. Wind was movingaway from me. All this activityand excitement is the indicator to the much awaitedfestival Ganeshotsav!This festival marks the presence of our favorite Ganpati Bappa inour homes and hearts.Mass celebration of Ganeshotsav was started by Lokmanya Tilakin the year 1894. The motive behind this was to increasecommunication between people, share thoughts of Swaraj andthus fuel the freedom struggle with the common manscontribution. But, over the period of times, this mass celebrationhas changed agendas. Every year, the city witnesses thousandsof Ganeshotsav celebrations from various areas. The trends ofthese celebrations tend to change every year.To make any Ganeshotsav ideal and productive of colony level, some of the following pointsprove to be useful:1. Ganesh Murti: The idol of the lord is the most important factor while conducting this festival.Recently, idols in various shapes colors and sizes have come in the market. One must realize thatevery god has a stereotypical look and feel that should not be tampered with. One may seeganesh idols with unacceptable props and clothes. This is one front where we cannot and shouldnot experiment.The murti should look serene and calm. Everyone comes to god with a host of wishes andgrievances. Children,youth, mid-aged and senior citizens all are a part of the society and hence must be given equalimportance.One must include programs that aim on health, sports, entertainment. One must address anyimportant health, social or political issue of public interest.4. Ambience: One must not forget that when one works for spiritual events, the complexity of thesituation increases. It is very important to maintain the ambience and serenity of the place. We asyoung people sometimes end up using foul words or unacceptable exclamations. It is essential toavoid such mistakes at a place of spiritual importance.All the musical programs that are conducted must take into consideration senior citizens, babies, illpeople and students while they play loud music. 13. Varsha Rutu Charya (Life style in Rainy season) - AnAyurvedic viewVarsha Rutu lakshan/symtomps:-1. The wind blows from the vaaruna direction, so all the greenery starts growing.2. The sky is covered with Indra neela-coloured clouds.3. Due to heavy rains the steps of the ponds are immersed in the water. The river gets filled upand appears like oceans. The ground is not properly visible as it is covered by rain water.4. Sounds of clouds, peacock, frog etc are heard.5. The earth appears as if it is decorated with indragopa (a kind of red or white colored insect),vidyudhota (a flash or luster of lightning)6. One can see green plants, grass, shileendhra (fungus) all over. One can also see the plenty ofkutaja flowers.Changes in the body:- Due to the effect of the aadana kala the body as well as the agni becomes weak. In varsharutu it gets affected further by rains, humidity, water, amla paka and the dushita jala(impure water).So it is adviced to undergo purification procedures followed by vasti panchkarma. Due to thisweak agni vataetc doshas gets vitiated very easily. Due to the effect of clouds, cold wind andcold water plants are in their tarunavastha (young or tender) and have amla vipaka(sour vipaka).Soone should not do excess exercise.Pathya:- Yusha(soup),samskruta yusha(processed soup) of purana shali(old rice), godhooma(wheat),yava(barley), jangala mamsa can be taken to protect the weak agni. The food should benatisnigdha(not very unctuous), nati rooksha(not very dry), nati ushna(not very hot) and shouldhave deepana qualities. Madiraa(spirituous liquor), arishta, madhweeka can be taken mixing with honey in very littlequantity of water or drink boiled and cooled water from mahendra/Divyajala(rain water)/ kupa(well)/sarasa(pond) or water mixed with honey. The food and the drinks also should be mixed with honey. One should adopt kleda hara(which depletes moisture) and vata hara food and drinks. Oneshould eat parishushka(dry), laghu(light), snigdha(unctuous), ushna(hot), amla, lavana tasting foodsto pacify the vata dosha on the days which have more rains and wind. To reduce the moisture andto balance the doshas one should take kashaya, thikta, katu tasting foods and alpadrava(lessliquid) foods. Praghrsha, udwartana (powder massage), snana, dhoomapana,gandhamaladharana(wearing perfumed garlands) are to be practiced. Paste of sugandha dravyas(fragrantdrugs) are to be applied on the body. Should live in a place which is protected by reptiles, moist, cold, wind, drizzle (sheekara),mosquito, rats etc. The living room should be warm(should be kept warm with the help of fire). Oneshould avoid the exposure to humidity, so should live in a house which is built above the groundlevel(vihayasi).The room should not be windy. Should wear light and clean cloths after bath.Should wear cloths which have different designsand should wear different types of garlands around the neck.Use thick blankets to cover the bodywhile sleeping. Apply agaru lepa on the body while going out of the house. Should travel in any veicle and not in open wind.Apathya:- Avoid nadijala(river water), udamantha(barley water), divaswapna(day sleep), atidravabhojana(liquid food intake), maithuna(sexual intercourse), exposure to cold or frost(tushara),padacharana(walking with naked legs), vyayama(exercise) and exposure to sunrays.Avoid exposure to frost and avashyaya(drizzle), sunrays. Avoid excess vyayama,atijalapana(drinking more water). Avoid the exposure to drizzle.Avoid ajeerna etc digestiveproblems.- Anand Kulkarni.

According to the Indiancalendar it falls on the 15th of the month of Ashada. Bhagawan Vyasa is called Veda Vyasa - orthe Compiler of the Vedas. Bhagawan Vyasa saw that, in the coming yugas, men would be ofgrosser mind and would lack the ability to learn and retain all of the Vedas. So he compiled theVedas into four parts the Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva Veda. Furthermore he wrote the Puranas so that the common people could also benefit from the knowledge of the Vedas - he conveyed the same spiritual principles through the medium of stories and parables. He is also the author of the Brahma Sutras - the quintessence of Vedanta. So it is but fitting that his birthday is celebrated as Guru Purnima. What is it that you are supposed to know on this day of Guru Purnima? You must understand that God is in you, with you, around you, above you, below you. In fact, you are God. Recognise this truth in the first instance. Do not entertain excessive desires and become beggars. Do your dutysincerely. That is the true Sadhana. When you are in office, do office work only; do not think ofyour family matters. Likewise, when you are at home, take care of the needs of your wife andchildren. Do not make your home an office. But today because of too much work in office, peopletake office-papers to their homes to complete their work. They are thus facing difficulties becausethey mix up their office work, household work, business and spiritual matters.Right from this day, try to reduce your attachment to the world to the extent possible. Be happyand make others happy. Do not hurt anybody. Consider difficulties as passing clouds. You havedeveloped family relationships and there are bound to be some worries. But do not be perturbedby them. When you look at the vast sky, you find many clouds. Likewise, in the sky of your heartthere are clouds of attachment. They just come and go. Do not worry about them. What is theshape of worry? It is a mentally created fear. It is the result of your imagination. Every man isbound to encounter difficulties and losses. We should face them with courage. From this day of Guru Purnima, make your hearts sacred. Just as you wave away the mosquitoes that bite you, brush aside any difficulties that assail you. Do not be depressed by sorrow nor be elated by happiness. Develop equanimity and strive to attain Divinity. Today is described as Guru Purnima Day. This is not quite correct. The day got its name because of some gurus who wanted to have an occasion for receiving offerings from their disciples. Theright name for this day is Vyasa Purnima.Vyaasa was born on this full moon day. He completed thecodification of the four Vedas on this day. He completed thewriting of the eighteen puranas on this day. Owing to the passageof time Vyasa Purnima came to be called Guru Purnima.Serving the Guru

Theone who has no Guru above him is the true Guru. The Sanskritstanza which hails the Guru as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswaraand as Parabrahman is mis-interpreted. The right approach is toconsider Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara as the Guru. Thesethree are symbolised by the three gunas: Brahma is Rajas,Vishnu is Sathva and Siva is Thamas. The whole cosmos isconstituted by the three gunas. The three gunas are present in man. In order to walk on the pathof knowledge and goodness in life, it is must to have a teacher.Guru Purnima UtsavOn Guru Purnima, birthday of Maharishsi Vyas is celebrated in whole with full excitement. It isconsidered auspicious to worship Guru and have their blessings on this day. By the blessings ofGuru, a person leads his life on a spiritual path. The relationship between Master and disciple ispurely a spiritual connection which is not effected by their ages. This relationship of devotion isbased on maturity and manhood. A Student should always have a feeling that by the guidance ofmaster, he will have spiritual growth and a teacher should think of his disciples welfare.Guru Puja is a day of bowing to the spiritual connection between teacher and student. In simple words, he can be called the mass ofknowledge.Hindus attach paramount importance to spiritual gurus. Gurus are often equated with God andalways regarded as a link between the individual and the Immortal. Just as the moon shines byreflecting the light of the sun, and glorifies it, all disciples can dazzle like the moon by gaining fromtheir Gurus.What is Guru Purnima?The full moon day in the Hindu month of Ashad (July-August) is observed as the auspicious day ofGuru Purnima, a day sacred to the memory of the great sage Vyasa. All Hindus are indebted tothis ancient saint who edited the four Vedas, wrote the 18 Puranas, the Mahabharata and theSrimad Bhagavata. Vyasa even taught Dattatreya, who is regarded as the Guru of Gurus.Significance of Guru PurnimaOn this day, all spiritual aspirants and devotees worship Vyasa in honor of his divine personageand all disciples perform a puja of their respective spiritual preceptor or Gurudevs.This day is of deep significance to the farmers, for it heralds the setting in of the much-neededrains, as the advent of cool showers usher in fresh life in the fields. It is a good time to begin yourspiritual lessons. Traditionally, spiritual seekers commence to intensify their spiritual sadhanafrom this day.The period Chaturmas ("four months") begins from this day. In the past, wandering spiritualmasters and their disciples used to settle down at a place to study and discourse on the BrahmaSutras composed by Vyasa, and engage themselves in Vedantic discussions.The Role of the GuruSwami Sivananda asks: "Do you realize now the sacred significance and the supreme importanceof the Gurus role in the evolution of man? It was not without reason that the India of the pastcarefully tended and kept alive the lamp of Guru-Tattva. It is therefore not without reason thatIndia, year after year, age after age, commemorates anew this ancient concept of the Guru,adores it and pays homage to it again and again, and thereby re-affirms its belief and allegiance toit. For, the true Indian knows that the Guru is the only guarantee for the individual to transcend thebondage of sorrow and death, and experience the Consciousness of the Reality."At the Sivananda Ashram, Rishikesh, the Guru Purnima is celebrated every year on a grand scale.1. All aspirants awake at Brahmamuhurta, at 4 oclock. They meditate on the Guru and chant hisprayers.2. Later in the day, the sacred worship of the Gurus Feet is performed. Of this worship it is said inthe Guru Gita: [ : [ [ ] [ ["The Gurus form should be meditated upon; the feet of the Guru should be worshipped; his wordsare to be treated as a sacred Mantra; his Grace ensures final liberation".3. Sadhus and Sannyasins are then worshipped and fed at noon.4. There is continuous Satsang during which discourses are held on the glory of devotion to theGuru in particular, and on spiritual topics in general.

18. 5. Deserving aspirants are initiated into the Holy Order of Sannyas, as this is a highly auspiciousoccasion.6. Devout disciples fast and spend the whole day in prayer. They also take fresh resolves forspiritual progress. , ]The Gurus AdviceSwami Sivananda recommends: "Wake up at Brahmamuhurta (at 4 a.m.) on this most holy day.Meditate on the lotus feet of your Guru. Mentally pray to him for his Grace, through which aloneyou can attain Self-realisation. Do vigorous Japa and meditate in the early morning hours."After bath, worship the lotus feet of your Guru, or his image or picture with flowers, fruits, incenseand camphor. Fast or take only milk and fruits the whole day.In the afternoon, sit with other devotees of your Guru and discuss with them the glories andteachings of your Guru."Alternatively, you may observe the vow of silence and study the books or writings of your Guru,or mentally reflect upon his teachings. Take fresh resolves on this holy day, to tread the spiritualpath in accordance with the precepts of your Guru."At night, assemble again with other devotees, and sing the Names of the Lord and the glories ofyour Guru.
