DESCRIPTION OF DATA FILE

IntroductionThe following information is taken directly from the Biro Pusat Statistik's publication, 1985

Intercensal Population Survey (SUPAS) organization and methodology. The 1985 SUPAS isconducted for the entire geographic area of the country, and covered all persons with permanentresidence. Person in special census blocks and institutional households are not included in thesampling frame. Also different from population censuses, SUPAS does not cover persons without apermanent residence such as ships' crews, isolated groups, homeless people nor Indonesian citizensliving abroad.

Considering population characteristics are basically evenly distributed throughout thecountry, the sample selection is such that every region is represented. The design is in accordanceto BPS' policy to optimize the allocation of workload among its field workers.

Sampling DesignIn general the country is divided into two on the basis of the average population density in

each kecamatan (sub-district). The first category includes all provinces with dense population, i.e. 8provinces in Sumatera, 5 provinces in Java, the province of Bali, and 4 provinces in Sulawesi. Thesecond category covers the rest of the country, i.e. 4 provinces in Kalimantan, West and East NusaTenggara, East Timor, Maluku and Irian Jaya.

1. Sampling frameIn selecting the census blocks, the sample list constructed during the 1983 Census of

Agriculture is used. This list is comprised of 20 percent of all census blocks formed for statisticalpurposes, and is designed for surveys with household approach.

This frame is used with the following considerations:a. The sample list was drawn, systematically after arranging the villages by their geographiclocations.b. For these selected census blocks a household list and a sketch of the census block were madeduring the field work of the 1983 agricultural census.c. The drawing of the sample is made easier by the use of computer since the frame is stored inBPS's computer.

2. Sample selectionFor provinces in the first category described above the sample is selected by a two stage

sampling design. In the first stage census blocks are selected and in the second about tenhouseholds from each sample blocks are visited.

For the rural areas in the provinces of the second category a three stage sampling design isapplied. In the first stage sub-districts are selected; the second and third stage follows the samepattern as that in the first category. Sample selection in the urban areas of the provinces in thesecond category is exactly the same as in the first category.

Selection of the households is done as follows: in each district the number of households tobe selected is ten times the number of census blocks assigned to the district. The sample interval isdetermined by the statistics office at the district level after the household listing is completed in allcensus blocks in the respective district. The same statistics office draws the random start for eachcensus block.

This above mentioned design allows estimation to be made for each province classified byurban and rural areas. For areas with sufficient sample size estimates can also be calculated at thedistrict level.

Structure and Contents

The data file consists of 5 record types: two Household Records, a Person Record, an Ever-Married Woman's Record, and a Health Record. Each record starts with 7 variables which provideinformation about the location of the census block. At the end of each record are 42 recoded andconstructed variables.

1. Household Record I, Record Type 02, contains 7 variables. Variables 01-03 describethe number and age of household members. Variables 04 and 06 are the numbers ofbirths and deaths in the household since June 30, 1984. Variable 07 is the date ofsurvey.

2. Household Record II, Record Type 05, contains 23 variables. Variables 01 through10 ask about land and household ownership. Variables 11-23 are the characteristicsof the dwelling, including floor, roof, water/bath/toilet facilities, and householdgoods.

3. Person Record, Record Type 07, contains 46 variables on every person in thehousehold. There is one record for each household member. Variables 01-07 includeinformation about sex, marital status, religion, citizenship, etc. Variables 08-18contain information about migration, variables 19-23 about education, and variables24-46 about occupation and employment.

4. Ever-Married Women's Record, Record Type 09, contains 58 variables. Variable 01is the serial number of the household member. Variables 02-15 are questionsregarding marriage and children. Variables 16-55 ask questions regarding eachchild. Variables 56-58 are about contraception and family planning.

5. Health Record, Record Type 12, contntains 42 variables. Variable 01 is theserial number of the household member. Variables 02-21 are the questions about childhealth including breast feeding and immunization. Variables 22-42 are about deadpersons formerly living in the household.

Weighting Adjustment

The Indonesian Bureau of Statistics attached sample weights to household and individualrecords. These weights inflate the sample population to the total enumerated population. In thesample file, there are 12,541 Census Block Records (3,257 urban and 9,248 rural), 126,966unweighted Household Records and 605,858 unweighted Person Records. Applying the weightvariables for household produces 35,889,411 weighted Household. To obtain the adjustments of theweights, but without the inflation factor, multiply each household weight by the ratio126,966/35,889,411.
