DEADLINE FOR THE OCTOBER 2016 EDITION

Items for publication MUST be with the editor by

7th September 2016

Thank you to everyone who has sent in material for publication. If you

haven’t seen your article in this newsletter, please be assured that we will

use it in a future edition. We require more articles and features so that we

have them in have for forthcoming newsletters

We have several excellent articles for you inside. On page 3 there is our usual AGM information and map how to get there. Do try to attend as it’s a great day out and a free buffet lunch is provided. Plus there is the only all First Day Cover fair in Britain.

On pages 4 and 5 Selwyn Goodacre shows us some rare FDCs linked with Children’s books. Selwyn owns a very special cover collection and he is a stalwart of your newsletter, coming up with article after article. He never fails to send us something worthwhile to publish. His articles are always interesting and well received. We have much to thank Selwyn for.

The Greetings 1993 stamp issue, and unusual covers pertaining to it, is an ongoing saga which we are very happy to publish articles about. David Cohen has presented 3 similar covers that he has in his collection, plus information as to how they may have come about. If anyone has any idea how many covers were produced like this or, if any other stamp issue has similar covers produced, then please write in to the usual address and include good quality photocopies

Jonathan Guy asks, “Is it time to revalue your Philstamp covers” on pages 12 and 13. Jonathan supports his question with images and ebay realization list of one of Philstamp covers. It makes for very interesting reading.

On the bottom of page 13 I have shown a scan of an empty envelope that I received on the 10th June. Whatever was inside it had well and truly disappeared. If you recognize the envelope as yours then please contact me and resend whatever was inside it. If there was a cheque inside then please contact your bank and ensure it hasn’t been cashed.

The MCS pages are once again poorly supported. Please get your unwanted and duplicate covers list to us in good time for the October and December editions. Let’s aim to have a full MCS feature for both newsletters and you might be able to secure a bit of extra cash for Christmas.

On pages 14/15, Dot presents an article on a Tin Can Mail Entire that she didn’t know she had! It makes interesting reading. The envelope itself is a super illustration of the type of covers Dot likes to collect, even now. The enclosed letter tells the history of the Tin Can Mail in handwritten fountain pen by the sender. The envelope is by no means very rare but how many still have the letters that were enclosed inside them by various senders?

On page 16 John Cook asks for members’ help to identify a mystery cover with a bisected 1963 Paris 6d stamp on it.

Happy summer collecting and enjoy your holidays. See you again in October

On collecting FDCs with original art work

By Selwyn Goodacre

There is something very appealing about acquiring FDCs with original art work. In essence it means one

has what is tantamount to a unique item. I of course understand that most examples we know of tend to be

duplicates – but being original work, copies can never be exactly the same – so even here essentially one

has a unique item.

Some artists would appear to specialise in creating pictures for first day covers. I wonder if certain issues

attract art work more than others? I tend to go for issues connected with children’s books, and it may be

that this is an area which encourages the idea of extra pictures. Benham’s certainly ‘went to town’ with

covers for the ‘Magical Worlds’ issue of 21 July 1998 – with a number that they styled as ‘Hand Painted

Originals’. These were stated to be limited to 200. I have examples from four different artists, each of

whom provided 50 covers – so presumably these constitute the total of 200. So -

Gina Skinner did 50 covers with a Daresbury PHS; Amanda Skinner (was she related to Gina?) did 50

with a Halstead PHS; Helen Easier-Beeken did 50 with a Birmingham PHS; and Jeff Riddle did 50 with a

Belfast PHS. Each is, of course, related to the subject of the PHS – so Lewis Carroll for Daresbury, J R R

Tolkien for Birmingham, E Nesbit for Halstsead, and C S Lewis for Belfast.

In 2015, for the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ issue (6 January), Benham again issued ‘Hand Painted Originals’

– but in this case limited them to 30 in total, all by Jennifer Toombs.

Thanks to Richard Park I also have a Newcastle-on-Tyne FDC with an original picture of Pooh, signed

‘B.S.Vasey (- after E.H.Shepard)’ (Richard told me he thinks this is probably a ‘one off’ cover).

When I wrote my article (First Day Coverage August 2015) on the ‘Village Churches’ issue of 21 June

1972, I mentioned an artist ‘R. Mammatt’(?) (the signature is difficult to read) who created a ‘Special

issue of 30’ covers – each with a fine pencil drawing of Earls Barton Church. Thanks to Richard Park

I now have five of them. The interesting thing here is that they all differ slightly – some have a tree,

some have a carriage and so on.

Finally – one quite extraordinary Year of the Child cover (1979), which I think was organised by our

friend Jeffrey Booth (his stamp is on the cover flap). It bears the Distington, Workington, Cumbria CDS,

(Fig.1) with four blocks of four stamps (one block for each of the four stamps) – each block consists of a

plain gutter pair and a traffic light gutter pair – below are a number of drawings of characters from

children’s books – signed by Jack Follows. Even more curiously I have a sort of copy of this Booth cover,

also with a Distington CDS, but with each block of stamps now consisting simply of two sets of plain

gutter pairs. Below are again the same drawings of characters from children’s books – but rather inferior

copies of the Jack Follows pictures. (This cover has a ‘Stamp Searchers USA’ stamp on cover flap).

Searching out covers like these, which lie outside the scope of the standard Catalogues, is an intriguing

voyage of discovery.

Another Rare Cover

By Selwyn Goodacre

As a relative newcomer to this game, I tend to rely on what we are told in the official catalogues (Booth, Bradbury, Scott etc.), so I was delighted to be able to acquire, in the ‘Magical Worlds’ issue of 21 July 1998, three examples of the official cover for the Scouts’ ‘Scottish International Patrol Jamborette’ – with the Blair Atholl Pitlochry PHS.

The Scott Catalogue tells us that one must be on the lookout for fakes, and adds ‘This cover was very difficult to obtain, the envelope being sold to those at the Jamborette. Few therefore used as FDCs’. Another source suggests about 40 were produced, and that 10 of the 40 also have meter marks. Happily I have two examples of the official cover, each with the stamps fixed in different pattern.

And I also have an official cover (with stamps fixed in yet another different pattern!), with a Dunfermaline ‘Scouts Dunfermaline’ meter mark (see figure).

The question is – do the other nine have different meter marks? (We know from our illustrious editor Phil Sheridan, that many different meter marks are produced for different issues). The search continues.

A GREETINGS COVERS 1993 REVISITED by David Cohen [email protected]

I saw the article in Coverage by Selwyn Goodacre, and I thought I would give you some more

information from my perspective. I was the seller referred to by Selwyn Goodacre who put an example of this cover into the auction in

2011. I bought a batch of covers on ebay earlier that year which included four examples of the

Greetings cover, a 1992 Green Issue cover and a Definitive cover. All of these had a combination of

Civil War handstamps (only one of the greetings covers has the 1993 Greetland handstamp, the remainder only have the Civil war handstamps also on one of the covers the handstamps are on a grey background).

I sold the Green Issue and Definitive cover in the GBFDC auction around 2011/2012.

I had previously seen the Greetings covers listed in Brian Reeves auction in 2008 (FDC sale 269 - it

realised £400) there was another one listed later which appeared in several auctions. The covers

were listed with the comment:- "1993 Greetings (issued 2-2-93) Royal Mail FDC with 3 different special handstamps for the Civil War issue dated 16-6-92, 8 months earlier! Believed to have been done by Royal Mail at the Swindon research & development centre when testing new high speed FDC cancelling equipment"

I have attached scans of the three varieties I have. Should a member be interested (the one with

the grey handstamps is badly creased, it looks like it may have been a failure that somebody tried to destroy)

I am open to offers if anyone wants the covers.

GBFDC’s SECOND OFFICIAL COVER FOR 2016 – Beatrix Potter – 28 July 2016

We have been very fortunate to obtain permission from Penguin Books to feature an actual drawing by Beatrix Potter herself from the book, Tale of Ginger & Pickles. We hope you like

it (Cover design copyright of GBFDC and must not be used until all covers have been dispatched

to members)

The last ordinary GBFDC official cover will be for Agatha Christie 15th September, we hope! There is also an issue still under wraps for 20 October and that might be worth a look at when Royal Mail allow us to know what it is. The Great Fire of London remains our cover for 2016 AGM.

Please send in your letters to the editor for publication. We had nothing to include for this edition. Every member who submits a letter or an article that is published will be entered in to our Prize Draw for a sought after AGM official cover.

Members Cover Sale

If you are an ordinary member and would like to sell your covers free of charge, then be sure to let the editor have your list in good time for publication. All the covers listed are being sold by the member whose contact details appear at the beginning of their listing. We have laid out each set of listings as requested by the vendor so layouts will probably differ from person to person. If left to the editor to arrange then the listings will take on a more uniform appearance. Prices given are the cost of each cover and buyers must contact the seller direct to negotiate the sale. The seller may or may not add postage costs so it is up to the seller and buyer to come to their own arrangement. All that remains is to wish you good luck.

Is it time to revalue your Philstamp covers?.... by Jonathan Guy I was struck recently by an eBay auction of a Philstamp cover from 2009 featuring the Design Classics series of stamps. Philstamp were noted for limited run, cartoon drawn FDC's and most of the covers sold out very quickly. Original sale prices were £10-£20 and the entire series lasted for just ten years. This cover was from a limited run of 20 and had the added bonus of featuring the signature of the artist, Hunt Emerson who even has his own Wikipedia entry.

Continued………….

As someone who was absent from the collecting scene for most of the late 90’s and early 00’s I was keen to get a Philstamp cover, especially as when I returned to collecting in 2010 one of the first things I spotted was an article in Stamp Magazine advising that the very last issue was on sale. Needless to say, by the time I called up they had all long since gone. So I put a ‘watch’ on this item to see what would happen.

With one day to go it had topped out at £52, which I took to be a fair price for whoever had the winning bid, given the current catalogue value in Bradbury is £25 for an unsigned cover.

What happened next was astonishing. Here is a breakdown of the bidding from that point onwards;

With just two hours to go more bids started to appear and in a final flurry, where it is clear that the two top bidders were using a sniping programme, the final price went up to £454. I think that in this case we had two buyers who both really wanted this cover as the final flurry of snipes took it from just over £100 to the final amount. Maybe one of you is reading this article? Perhaps this is a one off and the fact that the artist signed it makes it all the more valuable, but I’d be interested to hear others’ views on this. Are Philstamp covers now at a point where they should command a premium above current catalogue value or was this a one off?

MYSTERY ENVELOPE

The envelope below was delivered to me on 10th June 2016 but it was completely empty due to an insecure flap. It was a self-seal flap that failed to seal, as they often do. It was cancelled by machine at Royal Mail North & West Yorkshire office on 08.06.16 at 06.43 pm. If you recognise this envelope as yours, then whatever was in it has gone astray, possibly whilst going through the postal mechanisation

system. It’s anybody’s guess where the contents are right now. Maybe destroyed or just in a pile of unidentifiable mail in a corner of some sorting office. The main thing is, I didn’t receive the contents, so please resend whatever it was so you won’t miss out on what it was you wanted.

Many thanks.

Phil.

TIN CAN MAIL ENTIRE……by Dot R.

Phil was very kindly helping me go through my cover collection and she came across the Tin Can Mail cover (shown below). However, what I didn’t know, and Phil found, was a two page letter inside. I have no idea how I missed it but I did.

Continued………

The front of the cover carries a plethora of cancellations and cachets. The stamp is a 2½

D

Toga stamp. You can just make out the cancellation as Niuafoou but the date is indistinguishable. Most of the handstamps and cachets can be read without problem, even from a scan. The writing top left is not so readable but it says, “This Letter, enclosed in a water-tight Tin, was put into the sea from the cruise Steamer ‘Maunganut’ off Niuafoou or ‘Tin Can Island’ in the Tongan Group – Lat 15

Long, 175 o39

West. On the 11th

August 1938. G. B. Morgan, D.S.C.. Commander.” As you can see, the reverse of the envelope carries as many again of handstamps and cachets. The date can be clearly seen here as 1938. It looks like these

covers were produced by a guy by the name of W. G. Quensell. He signed his name on the bottom on the reverse in fountain pen ink, Walt: Geo Quensell T.C.C.M.M. I like covers like this, plenty of handstamps and cachets. I think it makes the item very interesting. I have researched the actual cover on line and have found similar covers selling for between $39 and $58. Not expensive really. I don’t know if they contain a two page letter too. So, if you have one of these covers then please let me know if there is a letter inside it and who it is signed by. The two page letter inside mine was obviously written by hand using a fountain pen on lined paper. It certainly doesn’t look like a carbon copy. It was sent to a Marjory Aylott, Lanker’s Drive, North Harlow, Middlesex, England. It is signed by a chap called ‘Roy’ of Cambridge Street, Levin, NZ. On the 25

th July 1938.

If anyone would like a photocopy of the two page letter (shown below) then please send a stamped SAE and 2 x 1

st class stamps.

Futher information about this cover and any letter inside would be most welcome. Thank you.

MYSTERY COVER – HELP REQUIRED PLEASE Can anyone assist with the history, identification or reason for the attached - pictured cover? First and foremost it is not a first day cover but the circumstances are rather strange. The Paris 6d stamp issued earlier in 1963 on 7th may has been bisected and cancelled with a 14 September 1963 London stamp fair double ring handstamp and a cachet for the London Stamp Fair held at the Hilton Hotel London W1 on September 13th and 14th 1963. It is addressed to stand 9 at the stamp fair itself and there is no identification shown as to who was holding this stand but the cover is illustrated with an image of Lady Gomm's ball at Government House in Mauritius in 1847.

The cover has been surcharged with a 6d postage due stamp, cancelled with an unidentified single ring cds and carries boxed green post office regulatory advices signifying (a) the cover has been posted "contrary to regulations - W?" and (b) "6d to pay posted unpaid - W1" which has been initialled.

If you have any details or information about this cover then please send it in to your newsletter at the usual address – Thank you. Phil.

NEWSLETTERS BY E-MAIL

Many members are delighted with the PDF emailed version of the Newsletter. Not only does

receiving it this way cut down on having to find storage for paper newsletters around the

home, as all PDF Newsletters can be stored in a file of its own on your computer desktop, but

it means you can read the newsletter at A4 size and in colour. You can print out all the pages

at any time and at any size, or just one page if you so wish.

We do understand that for a variety of reasons many members do not want to receive their

copies via email and would prefer to continue with a hard copy. This is not a problem and we

would be happy to continue to send them out via the post.

From the point of view of our European and Overseas members emailing your newsletter

would mean that you could be on a par with everyone else when it comes to the opportunities

of purchasing items advertised in the newsletter, for instance in the Members Cover Sale.

Emailing the newsletter also saves your association money in paying for the newsletter

printing and in postage costs. At the time of writing we are emailing the newsletter to 100

members and are keen to increase this number.

Would you be willing to receive your A4 colour newsletter via email instead of a black and

white A5 hard copy in the mail ? Yes, then please contact Terry Barnett with your email

address.

If you already receive your newsletter by email then please don’t forget to let us know if you

change your email address.

That’s it from us for this edition. Please do look in your collections and see if you can put

together an article for us. It will be most appreciated.

MCS How to submit your covers for sale

Please submit your list either by post or email (typed in a Word Doc.) Please make it LEGIBLE otherwise it will not be included. Send them by e-mail to [email protected].. We would prefer you NOT to list covers in a table as it makes formatting difficult. Any member can sell covers via the newsletter free of charge. If you require further details then please contact the Editor.

Please, if possible, only send the list of covers for the next newsletter rather than sending a large list or several lists. It is becoming a little confusing to work out which list belongs to whom and which edition it is for. Thank you

1) Please list them in a Microsoft Word Document (NOT in a table though). The more details you include then the less space there will be for your covers and less covers will be listed.

2) Either email your list or send it by post to Phil Sheridan. Hon. Editor, GBFDC Association, P.O. Box 99, Widnes, Cheshire WA8 0NN. E-mail: [email protected] When posting hand-written lists please make sure we can read them. It is probably best to print all lists. 3) Deadline for all items for inclusion in to any newsletter is ALWAYS 7th of the previous month to the newsletter publication. Please see top of page 2 and inside back page in EVERY newsletter IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Whist we are happy to receive lists of covers for the MCS written in long hand for members who do not have a computer (or access to email), we would ask those member who do have a computer and (or) access to email to take the trouble to type out their lists in a Word Doc. or directly in to an email and email it to us. This will save us a lot of work and time in transferring the list to computer and trying to decipher hand writing. If you submit a list in long hand and we know you have a computer and email then we are sorry but we can’t guarantee to put your list in the newsletter. We hope you will understand. We are trying to make things a little easier for Phil & Dot due to their ongoing health problems

Scarce Double official covers

The covers below are all double official covers. It’s particularly nice when a stamp issue included a miniature sheet of different stamps from the single set. Collecting double official covers means the best of both worlds on a budget. If you wish to collect the full single set and miniature sheet of any stamp issue then buying a double cover is the way to go. Some doubles are easier to do than others. If there are a lot of stamps in the set then the cover has to be a tad bigger than the usual size. I only produce my doubles to order but I do keep one or two in case anyone should ask for one later. Below is the last one of each issue. Remember, all my double covers increase in value very quickly. All prices include postage. For this newsletter ONLY 20% Discount applies on any order. Get your double while you can.
