PARTNERS IN PRAYER THANK YOU!
Youth Ministry thanks the STM community for
their participation in Partners in Prayer. Over
150 parishioners joined with youth to partner in
prayer as we anticipate the Steubenville Catholic
Youth Conference this summer. The generous
donations received from parishioners allowed
us to meet our goal of covering the transportation
cost to St. Paul and to help make this an affordable
experience for our youth. We will continue to
pray for all in our parish community. For more information on the Steubenville conference or
Partners in Prayer, please contact Lisa Gaston

Q. & A. OF THE WEEK
3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER
"Jesus himself drew near and walked with them, but their eyes were prevented from
recognizing him." Can you imagine this scene? Jesus comes up next to these two
disciples, walks with them, talks with them, even goes so far as to explain the Scriptures
about him to them, and they still fail to notice who he is. Understandably, they were sad,
"looking downcast" because of Christ's death. Maybe their eyes glumly watched their
feet as they trod along instead of taking in the sights around them. But at some point they must have looked
at their companion's face. Why didn't they recognize Jesus until "he took bread, said the blessing, broke it,
and gave it to them"?
In everything else during their encounter, Jesus had appeared to be just another man. But when he broke
the bread, in fact celebrating the Eucharist, they realized who he was. And then, he "vanished from their sight."
Could it be that the risen Lord wanted to teach his followers about the new way in which he was present? He
may have vanished from sight, but he did not leave them. He was there, as we Catholics profess, through his
real presence in the Eucharist.
We are not so different from the disciples on the road to Emmaus. We may at times become downcast, wishing
that Jesus was with us in a more obvious, traditional way. But in fact, the risen Lord comes to join us every time
we go to Mass, remaining with us through his presence in the Eucharist. We only need the eyes of faith to
believe that it's true. This is not the same as physical sight, to be sure. But he is there. As Jesus himself said
in last Sunday's Gospel, "Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed" (John 20:29).
Q. Is it possible to measure
conversion to determine
if it is genuine or not?
A. A proclamation of a belief is
not a guarantee that one follows it.
I may believe strongly in a healthy
diet, avoiding fats and excess salt.
But you would not know it from the
foods I sample (a few times over!)
at the parish picnic! Beliefs are
proclaimed in both word and deed.
The first measure of conversion is the
one we take of ourselves. When we
claim to be Catholic, followers of
Jesus, and pray the creed at Mass
each week, how well do our deeds
measure up to our words? The
recent debates in political life
show how easy it is to put aside our
"personal" beliefs in favor of some
other belief of a social or political
origin. To say we follow the Lord
and believe in his Gospel means we
think, speak, and act with the mind
and heart of Christ, and are united
to his body, the church.
The same standard would apply
to anyone who claims a conversion
of heart. We know when we are
not true to our beliefs and
commitments. The "Catechism
of the Catholic Church" lists
many ways in which conversion
is accomplished (§ 1435). True
conversion manifests itself in the
way we live, the choices we make,
and, perhaps most importantly,
what we do when we think no one
is watching.
We must
always give a
good example
to encourage
one another.
