Everyday Stewardship Recognize God in Your Ordinary Moments

There’s No Place Like Home Where do you get the best night’s sleep? For me, it’s in my own bed. I don’t even really know why. There’s something about the texture of the sheets, the groove I’ve worn in the pillow. The mattress seems to recognize my shape. I’ve got a job that sees me traveling often and I’ve stayed in plenty of nice places. But there’s just no sleep like the sleep you get at home. There’s a feeling that we have when we’re at home. Our bodies seem to recognize it when we walk in the door. There’s a relaxation that kicks in, a peace that falls over us. I think that’s what Heaven will be like. It won’t be pleasure or happiness — those words aren’t enough to describe what it feels like to be at home, are they? It’s more than that. If you ever wonder why there is pain in this world, it’s because we’re not at home. That’s not to say we don’t belong here. Through God’s mercy, this beautiful world is where we live out our earthly existence, and those existences can be filled with amazing relationships and profound experiences. In fact, we might enjoy our time here so much that we don’t want to leave. But there’s a reason this life has so many things that don't make sense: loss, fear, anger, sickness, hatred. It’s because we weren’t made for this place. For our souls, it’s like a never-ending night in a hotel bed.

Theology of the Body (Column 16) Naked and Ashamed

Adam and Eve were filled with God’s Life and Love which we call Grace. We could say they were “clothed” in Grace. While physically naked, they did not “see” (pay attention to, be concerned about,) their nakedness. Rather, they saw in each other the image of their creator and the dignity of each other as a person in God’s image. Adam would love God in Eve and love Eve in God. Eve would love God in Adam and Adam in God. God would love each in themselves and in their union with each other. Adam and Eve were naked and unashamed.

Along comes the serpent who goes after Eve. The serpent of course represents Satan. Where is Adam when this

takes place? Genesis states very simply after the temptation: “and Adam was with Eve”. I must take a turn toward a tangent because it is too important to pass up. Remember Adam and Eve are in the Garden of Eden only temporarily. When they have manifested freely their choice to love God above all else and give God permission to bring their love to perfection in Heaven, they would have entered into the Beatific Vision of God, their love would have been made perfect, and they would be freed from all temptation, even that of Satan. Also, please recall the discourse on the meaning of love. The greatest measure of love is to lay down one’s life for another. While Adam was not going to die, he was immortal, this does not mean that the Serpent could not kill him. Adam had the duty to defend the Garden and everything in it, especially his wife Eve. What could he have done in the face of such a grave threat and evil as Satan? He could have said: “You enter here over my dead body” so to speak. The Serpent might well have said: “O.K.” and struck Adam down. What do you imagine would have happened if this played out this way? If you say God would have resurrected Adam back to life and brought him and Eve into the glory of Heaven in the Beatific Vision of God, I think you would be correct. They would have passed the test. However, they did not. In that moment of temptation, Adam remained silent in the face of evil. His silence, his hesitation in doing his duty, is already a failure to love. Even if he resisted by saying to Eve “No, don’t listen to it, don’t do it” she might have found the strength she needed to resist. But this is not what happened, Adam remained silent, and the Serpent/Satan was permitted to enter into the Garden.

As mentioned last week the nature of this temptation is to be one’s own god. God had revealed to Adam and Eve

that something was forbidden, and they were not to go there, in the context of the story they were not to “eat of it”. The exact act of disobedience we may never know in this life but it does not matter, the point is clear, by eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they disobeyed God, they chose to do something forbidden. This was an act of pride, of being their own God by deciding for themselves what was good and evil.

When Eve eats of this “fruit” what are the consequences? Nothing. Nothing happens after Eve eats of this fruit. She

presents it to Adam, and he eats of it. What happens when Adam eats of this “fruit”? All hell breaks loose (excuse the pun, although intended). Why? Remember what I said in an earlier column: we must see Genesis in light of Christ if we are going to understand it. God inspired the writers of Genesis to write it so that Adam would be a type of Christ and Eve a type of Mary and the Church. Eve was disobedient first, but her disobedience did not immediately cause the fall, it was only after Adam’s disobedience that was predicated on Eve’s disobedience. Mary gives her yes to the God through the Angel Gabriel. Her obedience precedes the obedience of Jesus (in time). It was not until Mary gave her “yes” to God that Jesus makes incarnate in time His “yes” to the Father. What was His “yes” to? Jesus gives his yes to the Father in that He will become man, like us in all things except sin, remaining God but not seeing His divinity as something to be grasped at. He will be obedient in not using His divinity for His own sake. Yes, He will use it to teach the Apostles that He is God and out of mercy for those in need, but not for His own comfort or pleasure, not even to save His life. Therefore, He is obedient even unto death, death on the Cross. Again, while Mary’s obedience preceded Jesus’s in time, Jesus’s obedience was predicated on Mary’s obedience. It was Jesus’s obedience that saved us. Eve’s disobedience preceded Adam’s disobedience, but Adam’s disobedience damned us. All Grace necessary for our salvation comes from Jesus Christ. Adam, as the first high priest, was chosen by God to be the minister of that grace to Eve, and from His union with Eve to the whole world. When Adam sinned, Eve lost that Grace and so did the whole world.

Back to the main topic: So, Adam disobeys God, eats of this “fruit” and what is the first thing that happens? They

realize they are naked, and they become ashamed. I promise, next week no tangents but an explanation why and what this means. In Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, / Fr. Jeffrey Galens
