• Guests: Clark Davis (Rotary 2000), Dan Christensen (Rotary 2000), Jonathan Tulli (KTKN/Gateway Country), Steve Van Zandt (State Assessor), Wendy Lawrence (Assistant State Assessor)

2013 District 5010 Conference in Ketchikan

May 9-12, 2013

Rotary Reigns "Service First in

the First City”

Michelle O’Brien and Jon Tulli

• Speaker: Linda Gens "Early Childhood Literacy" (Ketchikan Public Library)

• Early childhood literacy includes a knowledge of reading, the ability to process information and communicate it, and enthusiasm for learning before a child even begins to read.

• The Ketchikan Public Library has begun a Read-Walk-Talk program to improve early childhood literacy in local families. Go to pg.3

• Michelle reported that Wendy Olson, Rotary 2000 President Elect, has offered space at Olson Marine to build our Fourth of July float this year. Rotary 2000 would also like to participate in our annual "Float Gloat" party.

• Clark Davis passed around order forms for the Rotary 2000 annual flower sale fundraiser. He has been in charge it since 1986.

• The Aporkalypse Party will be held at the Asylum on April 14 and the proceeds will benefit a variety of causes, including the Rotary Exchange students. Ordering and wearing an Aporkalypse t-shirt will get you in upstairs to taste the bacon cook-off contest entries! See Michelle for details.

• George S. reminded everyone to firm up their District Conference travel plans. First City Rotary will provide financial assistance going towards registration fees. Sue suggested that Alaska Airlines companion fares could be used to book two tickets at once and reduce costs for more people to attend. There will be some great speakers this year in Fairbanks, and Ketchikan should strive to make a good impression there so that we'll have good attendance for the District Conference here in 2013.

The Prince of Wales dictionary deliveries have been postponed until May. Anyone who would like to accompany Dave and Rebecca Valentine should let them know.

• Sue attended the Seaside Chat at The Point to help present to the Ketchikan Medical Center the new vitals monitor that accompanies a chemo infusion pump. This monitor ensures cancer patients have the safest possible experience during treatment.

• Dan Christensen just celebrated his 33rd year of marriage to his wife.

• Dave's daughter, Amy Owings was one of the Distinguished Young Women of Alaska nominees who presented at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday. The event to decide the winner of the Distinguished Young Women of Alaska award will be held in the Kayhi auditorium on March 24. There will be character and talent expositions.

• Pastor Keith

received a grant to do career development training for teens and adults interested in film production. There will be 4-day seminars with experts from around Alaska held at Ketchikan High School. People interested in attending may apply for a scholarship through KPU to pay the fees.

• Mary reported that the 2013 District Conference steering committee selected the logo submitted by Patricia Rose. The next steering committee meeting will be on Monday, March 26, at noon in the Ketchikan Visitors' Bureau.

• The woodworking exhibit curated by George and Anna Shaffer is continuing through the end of March at the Main Street Gallery.

• Cynna was happy to share that her son is getting married and another grandchild has been born.

Continued Speaker:

Linda Gens

o Early childhood literacy includes a knowledge of reading, the ability to process information and communicate it, and enthusiasm for learning before a child even begins to read.

o The Ketchikan Public Library has begun a Read-Walk-Talk program to improve early childhood literacy in local families.

o Brain growth occurs exponentially between birth and age 3.

o Playing, communicating, eye contact, and positive attention are crucial during this time. When parents focus on their iPhones or computer screens instead of making that contact with their children, it limits the exposure to and development of literacy and learning skills. Children who are not taught to communicate well at an early age are less likely to exhibit empathy later in life.

o Early childhood literacy skills:

"Print awareness" refers to children acknowledging written information and symbols before reading begins, because they observe their parents

reading and are encouraged to recognize these things.

"Phonological awareness" refers to playing with sounds and words, becoming familiar with them and learning the structure of language.

Vocabulary - understanding words and their meaning.

Narrative skills - relating stories or events in a sequence, understanding cause and effect.
