Please join other church family members for a “potluck” barbeque picnic and fellowship at the Rickman Center (while we still have it!) after our single Pentecost Service on May 24th.

We ask each family “unit” to provide their own “meat” for grilling (dogs, brats, burgers, etc.), a supplemental side dish for all to share, and perhaps chips, a dessert, and non-alcoholic drinks as desired. Charcoal (yes “fired up”, and grill assistance with utensils) will be provided. Pool house restrooms will be open for utilization. Bring lawn chairs and sunscreen. Organized kids (of all ages) games!

It's just two short months until the 2015 New-to-You Sale! As you do your spring cleaning, keep the sale in mind for your gently used items. Please do not bring dirty and/or greasy kitchen appliances or computers.

As in years past, you can bring your donations to the church for storage at any time. Simply contact the church office (636-5157) so they can unlock the alley door. Able bodies, trucks and vans are needed after second service on June 28th to transfer the items from the basement to the Family Life Center. I will also take any volunteers who can help sort and tag during the week before the sale and assist during the sale itself on the Fourth. "Our Kids" Summer Reading Group

What kind of future do kids in America face? What role might Christians have in helping them flourish? These two questions and many others will be at the forefront of a summer reading group of Our Kids: The American Dream in Crisis by Robert Putnam, a widely read sociologist of American culture (his previous books include Bowling Alone and American Grace) and a Harvard University Professor of Public Policy. The six-week discussion group will be led by Rev. David Avery, the recently retired pastor at Community Christian Church, and Rev. Dr. John Bennett, a FCC elder and long-time social justice advocate and will meet at 6 pm every other Wednesday throughout the summer, starting on June 10th. Those interested in participating should purchase the book through a local bookstore or online and read the first chapter in advance of June 10th (there are 6 chapters, and one will be covered in each session). The format of the group will be discussion based, so participants will be encouraged to bring their insights and questions from the reading. VISIONING FOR THE FUTURE Our congregation will soon begin an important step in setting the future of the church. Board Chair Jon Schwartz has asked me to chair an Ad Hoc committee to lead members of our church through a visioning process. If you were in church last Sunday you heard Rev. Beau give a general idea of why and what the process would be. In the coming weeks, we’ll be reaching out to members about serving on the committee. I want to be honest with all those asked that it will be a substantial investment of time because the work of the committee is so important. We will strive to pull together a group that is representative of the congregation as a whole, while not overburdening those of you who have already committed to significant leadership responsibilities. I also want to emphasize that the initial visioning team will spend significant time soliciting input and feedback from the entire church. After the initial stage in this effort, the team will be intentionally broken up into sub-groups focused on specific aspects of our ministry and additional members will be recruited to participate in that work. All of this will be shared in some detail at the May 31st Board meeting, and I’m available to answer any questions you might have. The intent throughout this critical process will be for the entire church to feel invested in – and get excited about – the direction we are moving as a congregation. An Announcement about Summer Sunday School for Kids (& Families)

This summer (starting May 31) we will have an all-ages Sunday School class for kids ages 3-18 AND their parents in the Family Life Center. (This will replace our current age-specific Sunday School programming through the summer). Each week will be lead by different volunteers and will include inter-generational learning activities. We invite families to attend each Sunday at 9:30 in the FLC to grow as a family in faith and to grow together with other families as a church community.

CONGRATULATIONS 2015 GRADUATES!

Kaley Ruff, daughter of Terry & Brenda Ruff, graduated from Jefferson City High School. In the

fall, she will attend Maryville University in St. Louis where she received a scholarship to play

soccer, and will be majoring in physical therapy. Kaley had the honor of giving the invocation at

the high school baccalaureate service. Here is the prayer she offered for all the graduates:

Dear Heavenly Father, Please be with us today as we celebrate the accomplishments of Jefferson City High School’s two-thousand and fifteen graduating class. I pray you watch over each one of us as we come upon the end of this chapter in our lives and as we begin to fill the next chapter with new experiences and adventures. Thank you for bringing us together on this day to reflect upon the friendships we have formed and the knowledge we have acquired during our time as students at Jefferson City High School. We also give thanks for the mentors, parents and educators who have helped mold us into the young men and women we are today. Though we know not what you have in store for our futures, Lord, we are confident we possess the ability and desire to use your gifts to make a positive impact in our community, nation and all across the world. Please help us and guide us to know the decisions we make in the next few years will affect the rest of our lives. Let this baccalaureate remind us of your unending love and strength that brings we people of faith through dark times and rough waters. As we go out into the world, Lord, we ask that you strengthen each one’s faith to follow you on whatever path may best serve you. Guide us as we seek to discover ourselves by glorifying you, O God. In your name we pray, Amen.

Lisa Ramirez, daughter of Rick & Stephanie Ramirez, graduated from Jefferson City High School. Her plans are

indefinite at this time.

Haley Schwartz, daughter of Jeff & Beth Schwartz (and the late Chrissy Schwartz), graduated from Russellville

High School. In the fall, she plans to go to Cottey College in Nevada, Mo. double majoring in music and English with plans to be a teacher.

Laurel Dey, daughter of Dan & Mavis Day, was one of 27 seniors, who graduated with JCHE (Jefferson City Home

Educators) class of 2015 on May 2nd. Laurel plans to pursue a degree in writing/English through Taylor University as well as continue with her music studies. Her degree program will commence later this month through online courses. She will be living in the Jefferson City area and working part-time.

Margaret Albert (granddaughter of Larry Neill) graduated from Jefferson City High School. She'll start college next

year in Rolla, Mo.

Rosie Woodruff daughter of Morris & Denise Woodruff, graduated from Lindenwood University in St. Charles.

Her plans are to finish her internship at Rhino Hyde productions. Rosie completed a book for children that she is actively seeking a publisher. Rosie is currently seeking employment in the Graphic Design field.

Brooke Hagenhoff will graduate from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and a minor in Mathematics.

Megan Neill (granddaughter of Larry Neill) graduated this year from the University of Alabama.

Allison Harvey Blosser received her PhD May 5 from Loyola University in Chicago. Her degree field is Cultural

and Educational Policy. Her dissertation was voted the top dissertation in the field of Professional Schools. Allison is the wife of Rev. Dr. Joe Blosser, the daughter-in-law of John & Cindy Blosser and the granddaughter of Marge Blosser. Music Ministry ~ Gretchen Huedepohl

“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.

And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire

appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit…” (Acts 2:1-4a) This weekend as we observe Pentecost Sunday, the day the Spirit was sent to birth the Church as promised, it is appropriate that we celebrate this Sunday in ways that mark it as special. I love that we are coming together for one worship service at 10:00 a.m. before we are scattered to be witnesses “to the ends of the earth,” as Jesus commands. This is not only symbolic of our unity as the Body of Christ here at FCC and our shared mission; it also serves a practical purpose, one that allows those who normally attend either the 8:20 or 10:40 service to take that first step in becoming acquainted with those who attend the service they don’t. It is also a small sacrificial act for each of us, setting aside our personal Sunday routine, preferred worship style, and perhaps even our regular pew in order to join with others who love the Lord’s church as much as we do. I encourage you to be a part of the celebration! The form of the service will not be drastically different, except that the sermon will be broken down into four parts throughout the service and shared by four of our members. Sharing testimonies of what the church has meant in their lives will be Steve Amick, John Mann, Becky McClain, and Michelle Sheppard. I look forward to hearing from each of these individuals and pray that their witness will embolden each of us to share our faith more openly. We each have a story to tell, one that can strengthen and encourage others as we all seek to follow Christ more faithfully. Music for Pentecost will include traditional hymnody, accompanied by two wonderful trumpeters. The Chancel Choir will share two contemporary anthems accompanied by Austin Dey on percussion. Both anthems, “Go Forth in His Name” and “Go Light Your World,” urge us as those “called to be holy” to claim the present as the time to reach out -- to those still “stumbling in darkness,” to those who may be seeking wrong avenues in search for light, to those in need of a hand to hold them up. We are the church, not equipped with just any old power, but the same power that raised Jesus from the dead! That’s an incomprehensible thought to me, but one that gives me confidence that God can work through the broken vessel that I am. What might happen at FCC and beyond if we all allowed that Spirit within us to be unleashed?!? SPECIAL MUSIC FOR SUMMER: This is the first of hopefully not too many pleas to those of you with musical gifts to share that gift in worship. Contact me by phone or email or in person to sign up for a Sunday service for which to offer a vocal or instrumental offering. I’m happy to help you choose music and willing to rehearse with you as often as needed. I welcome music that covers a broad spectrum of genres, from musicians of all ages. I would love to see some of our children and youth involved in addition to our faithful adults. I’m happy to report that this past week I received some positive responses from local guitarists and drummers willing to be a part of our worship team at the 10:40 service. Assuming we can get scheduling worked out, the congregation should start to see some new faces on the chancel from time to time. One such face is that of Karen Kelley, who will provide special music for us at both services on May 31. Karen is a student at Southwest Baptist University pursuing a degree in vocal music. I became acquainted with her when she was a student at Blair Oaks High School, and I served as her accompanist for District and State Music Festivals. She sings beautifully, plays trombone and guitar, and has a heart for serving the Lord’s church. She’s regularly attended worship conferences (even as a high school student); served for two years as a member of the praise team at First Church of God; and is serving this summer as a youth intern at First Baptist Church in Linn. I’m happy to have her with us for this summer, but continue the search for skilled guitarists who can join our team in the Fall, if not before then. I covet your prayers in this endeavor! outreach concert series. There is no admission, but a free will offering is accepted to help defray the cost of music for this non-profit group. *Monday, May 25, 3:00 p.m., Monticello Men’s Chorus Enjoy the beauty of the Capitol rotunda while soaking up music of this fine chorus which, when begun, included several men of our congregation. Music in the rotunda is spectacular! MARK YOUR CALENDARS for two more summer concerts that are a part of our music ministry outreach! *Tuesday, July 14, 7:00 p.m., Lake Area Community Orchestra I believe this is the 6th year we will host this ensemble in our sanctuary. It is a tradition that fills the sanctuary with members and friends from our community each year. There is no admission, but a free will offering is gathered to support the expense of music for the group. *Sunday, August 9, 4:30 p.m., Dr. Alison Robuck, oboe, and Dr. Peter Miyamoto, piano I’m so excited to have my friend (and Bob and Sally Robuck’s daughter-in-law) on the schedule to share her amazing talent with our church family and community. Dr. Miyamoto, who is on the faculty at MU, is equally amazing, having recorded and performed professionally on the concert stage. The duo is preparing for a performance in Toyko this summer.

Festival of Sharing

It is time, again, to start collecting items for Festival of Sharing. We need any item on this list you would like to donate: 1 hand towel 16” x 28” (NO fingertip or bath towels) 1 wash cloth 1 wide-tooth comb (remove packaging) 6 standard-size Band-Aids ™ 1 bar of soap (bath-size in wrapper) 1 toothbrush (in original packaging) 1 wide-tooth comb (remove packaging) 1 metal nail clipper (NO metal files or emery boards, remove packaging) These items go to Festival of Sharing, a Church World Service organization held in Sedalia in October. The Festival of Sharing is a cooperative response to world hunger, poverty, and injustice and seeks to raise awareness of its causes and to address solutions. The Festival of Sharing, an interfaith, state-wide, gathering event, is held on the third Saturday in October each year. This date was chosen because it is usually the Saturday closest to World Food Day. The Festival of Sharing promotes and supports projects and programs by providing funding and resource goods.
