“By these He has given us very great and precious prom-

ises, so that through them you may share in the divine

nature, escaping the corruption that is in the world be-

cause of evil desires. For this very reason, make every

effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness

with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-

control with endurance, endurance with godliness, god-

liness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection

with love. For if these qualities are yours and are in-

creasing, they will keep you from being useless or un-

fruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2

Peter 1:4–8, HCSB)

Peter wrote these words to encourage Christians in his day.

Christians were outnumbered and were beginning to be se-

duced by false teachers, within the church; attacked by non-

Christian Jews for their devotion to Christ; and targeted by

Roman officials. Being a Christian in that time wasn’t easy

and believers needed encouragement.

Peter had stated that God has provided all that is needed to

live a godly life. If these qualities (faith, goodness,

knowledge, self-control, endurance, godliness, and brotherly

love) increase, we will not become useless. We will continue

to bear fruit. That, my friend, is the work of the Holy Spirit. I

can’t ever recall anyone expressing a desire to be useless. I’ve

known a lot of people that didn’t realize that they had be-

come useless for the kingdom. I’ve known a lot of people

who lived as though they did not care about God’s kingdom.

But, I have never heard anyone say, “I want to be useless.”

Never! But it happens all the time.

This summer, we are preaching through a series entitled,

The Heart of the Home. This series will examine people in

the Bible who either remembered their call of God or, people

in the Bible who seemingly forgot their call of God. Each

Sunday we will read the series text, “For if these qualities

are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from

being useless or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord

Jesus Christ. The person who lacks these things is blind

and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from

his past sins.” (2 Peter 1:8–9, HCSB) By summer’s end, we

will be able to recite this passage by heart. I am praying by

summer’s end we will make the commitment to not become

useless for God’s kingdom.
