Motherhood
What is a mom? Mothers come in all shapes and sizes from all differ-ent backgrounds with varying life experiences. What is the common de-nominator? Through the process of pregnancy (with the obvious help of God) they choose to love. They house another human being within their own body for some 9 months (which I’m sure at times seems like eterni-
ty). Some mothers don’t get to carry their children, but in another demonstration of un-selfish love, through adoption they welcome children into their home. Then they feed, clothe, house, teach, correct, encourage, discipline, believe in, etc., this person for as long as they live. Pretty extraordinary, don’t you think?
Moms give up the TV for their kids (or at least they did back in the “1 TV per house-hold” era). If there’s a program to attend, they’re there. If something needs cleaned, washed, ironed, filled out, turned in, moms often are the “go to” people, right? And by the way, hats off to any single-parent family (whether a mom or a dad); only Heaven knows all you do! Moms are the managers of a million deadlines.
Moms take care of skinned knees and bruised egos, torn clothes and broken hearts. In some families, moms are the cheerleaders and spiritual leaders (of course, if a dad is in the picture, I hope he helps!). I know that days like Mother’s Day are bittersweet for a myriad of reasons, but motherhood holds out the possibility for so much good. If your mom is still here, call her; better yet, drop what you’re doing and go see her!
I suspect many of you have many wonderful memories of your mom. And thankfully, many of you are in the process of making positive family memories today. I remember my mom cheering me on as I played (ok . . . attempted to play) third base for my Little League team, The Jinx (that speaks volumes, huh?). When I went to state music contests, Mom wouldn’t have missed hearing her Glen Miller “wanna-be” playing trombone. When I graduated from high school, college, and seminary, my mom was so proud. I still blush when I think of her telling a world-class surgical genius that “My son is a doctor, too!” and I knew he was impressed . . . LOL.
When I was in college and serving one of my first churches, I took a vacation Sunday and went to Bellevue Baptist in Memphis to hear Dr. Adrian Rogers preach. When I got home, my mom asked me if I had been asked to sing that morning (you know, out of the 13,000 people there); only a mother! But perhaps my mom’s greatest gift and legacy (as a direct result of her walk with Christ) was how much she loved my dad and her children (and of course her favorite daughter-in-law), and her grandsons.
Memories are God’s great gift to us. Someone once said, “God gives us memories so that we might have roses in December.” This morning I’m thinking about mothers in May and my heart is full. I have a loving mother in Heaven, a wonderful mother-in-law on earth, and I’m married to the most beautiful woman who is the most remarkable mother to our sons.
“Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. . .” (Proverbs 31:28 ESV).
