SECONDARY NEWS ‐ Toni Shuman

Secondary is moving into our new facility!! So, with “D Day” approaching, please note the following:

PICK-UP/PARKING

As in the past, secondary students will meet their parents in the parking lot for after-school pick-up. The parking bay closest to the front of the Secondary Building will be used by faculty and staff. The next two are for student drivers. The fourth bay (just to the right of the gym when you are facing the building) will be for parents who are picking up students after school. Please park there and students will come to you rather than forming a line in front of the building and blocking First Baptist Drive.

In case of inclement weather, parents may approach the building from the gym and either pick up their student from the covered walkway in front of the gym or pull through the porte cochere at the front of the Secondary Building and exit toward Red Bluff.

Please be alert to cars in the elementary pick-up line and to secondary students walking toward cars or exiting from student parking areas.

ESC – MORNING

ESC will be available in the Secondary Cafetorium beginning at 6:45 in the mornings. Students entering the Secondary Building before 7:40 will report to the Cafetorium and sign in with ESC personnel. Those who are have detention or tutorials will sign in before reporting directly to the teacher indicated. Students who have athletic bags to drop off, may do so in the gym between 7:25 and 8:00.

ESC – AFTERNOON

Students not in tutorials are expected to exit the Secondary Building by 3:15. Athletes needing to access materials from their lockers before going home should do so before they leave the building at the end of the school day.

Students who are not picked up immediately after school and who are not in tutorials or supervised athletics may wait

outside the Secondary Building outside the Gym in ESC (normal fees apply) – Room S105 – until 3:55 (Those

still in secondary ESC at 3:55 will move to ESC in the elementary cafeteria).

Any student not under adult supervision who remains in the campus area at 3:55 must report to ESC in the elementary school cafeteria as the Secondary Building will be locked. This is a safety concern.

LOCKERS

All lockers come equipped with a combination lock. Junior high lockers are on the first floor while high school lockers are on the second floor. Students are expected to store all items in their locker. Athletic equipment will be stored in the gym and should not be brought into the building. Band instruments will be stored in the band hall. Only those backpacks that will fit into the baskets under the student desks are appropriate to bring to classrooms.

Staff Tes mony ‐ Alice Purcell

B eing a part of the FBCA family has been an amazing adventure for all of us. Kathy and I always wanted a Christian education for our son John and when we

moved to La Porte, TX we found FBCA to be the place. John started in 4th grade and is currently in the 10th. How quickly time passes by when you look how far we have come.

Our journey to FBCA started at Lamar University where I met Kathy. I had completed my Bachelor’s in Secondary Education for Math and History and a Master’s in Computer Science while Kathy finished her Master’s in Deaf Education. We both believe in the importance of a strong education especially one with a Christian world view. We both grew up with Christian parents and are thankful for that as during that time we became Christians ourselves understanding the work of Christ for us. John to us was a miracle child with many difficulties surrounding his birth but God was always there and guided us all the way.

We have seen John grow with FBCA from a child to pre-teen, becoming a Christian, then a teenager to now an amazing young man. He has learned so much from being there and learning from many of the teachers and staff of the school. For us FBCA can be exciting, challenging, sometimes even a bit overwhelming with the rate of learning and activities that can occur, but we see this as an opportunity for all of us. We have worked as a team in partnership with his teachers, administrators, Grandpa and his Aunt Cathy. Each week we work together planning homework, reviewing for tests, memorizing and understanding God’s word, openly talking about our friends and relationships realizing the grace that our Father shows on us all.

Life will send explosive shells at my son but with his time at FBCA, his family as a team and a God who is more amazing

than I can say, many of those shells will appear empty because of all the time and heart spent preparing our son for his continued journey.

M y parents sent me to a Baptist kindergarten where I heard the gospel for the first

time. I believed everything the teacher told me and began to pray and try to be good. Sometimes I would ride the bus to Sunday School or get on the bus to go to VBS in the summer. Those experiences always raised my awareness about God, but since I was not going to church regularly and was not taught about God at home, I didn’t learn much about what the Bible said.

When I was in junior high something happened that frightened me, so I thought I should get baptized in case I died, so I did. My grandparents took me to church with them for a while.

As a high school senior, some youth group kids invited me to a youth retreat. I think I was saved before, but I really know that I trusted in Jesus as my Savior and not in “being good” for salvation at that point.

I backslid a lot in college, but after I got married, I attended church and really started to learn about what a relationship with Christ means. I started attending a very good Bible study and learned how rich God’s Word is. I became very involved in church after that and learned so much. I had the head knowledge, but not the heart knowledge yet because my faith had not been tested.

Then my dad died. My husband was working out of state and it was all a very big mess. I had prayed for my dad to get saved as long as I could remember. He had met a preacher a couple of years before he died and got saved. He confirmed that to me just a few weeks before he died when He told me that Jesus was his Savior. This sad, dark time was when God really showed me that He’s real and that His Word is true. I know that He will always be with me because He is. He gives me the strength to endure the hardest things. When I get hit by painful events, His faithfulness helps me to respond to Him in faithfulness. I trust Him because He has shown me that He is everything His Word says He is. I’m so grateful that God has had His hand on me my entire life.
