Why talk about abuse & neglect in this

course?• They can cause injury

and illness to children.• They occur often

enough that most will see these problems at some time.

• Under Ohio law, child day care providers are required to report them -EVEN if it’s just suspected.

Recognizing Abuse

Accept that it happens!

Train yourself to ask: “Could this be abuse?” whenever a child has an unusual or suspicious injury.

Learn the warning signs.

Steps to Take

Report the abuse/neglect to the Children’s Service Agency in your county. It is your legal responsibility to report - even if you just suspect!

Become familiar with how to assist a child who discloses abuse.

Be specific. Include factual detail.

child’s parent and keep a copy on file.
