1 FireFly™OpticalCablesSamtecmanufacturesFireFlyactiveoptical cables (AOCs)whichprovideamid-boardmountedopticalinterconnectsolutionforchip-to-chip,board-to-boardorsystem-to-systemapplications,atdataratesupto 28 Gbps and link distances up to 100 m. FireFly optical modules are currently available in twoconfigurations.The first configuration consistsofa separate transmitter (TX)and receiver (RX)opticalmodule, each having 12 unidirectional (half duplex) optical channels. Together, the TX and RX cablesform a 12 channel (x12) full duplex optical link. The second configuration is a 4 channel (x4) opticaltransceiver,whichcontains4bidirectional(fullduplex)opticallinksinasinglemodule.

The active and opto-electronic circuitry in the FireFly opticalmodule is packaged on a printed circuitboard(PCB)substrate,whichisintegratedtogetherwithanopticalblockandheatsink.Theribbonfiberispermanentlyattachedthroughtheopticalblocktotheopticalengine.TheFireFlymoduleplugs intotheuserhostPCBviaatwopartconnectorsystem,whichisolatesthehighspeedelectricalsignalsfromthelowspeedcontrolandDCpower.

FireFlyopticalcablesareavailableintwoversions:AfullAOC,oraHalfOpticalCable(HOC).AfullAOChas FireFly opticalmodules on both ends of the cable, connected togetherwith a 12 channel ribbonfiber. This type of cable is used for chip-to-chip flyover applications on a host PCB. The cables areavailableinvariousfiberlengths.

Inboard-to-boardorsystem-to-systemapplications,itisusuallynecessarytoroutethefiberinterconnectthroughachassisbulkhead,orpre-installedstructuredcabling.Inthiscase,apairofHalfOpticalCables(HOC)istypicallyused,togetherwithafiberopticpatchcable(FOPC),andbulkheadOpticalPanelAdapters(OPA).ThisapplicationnotedealsspecificallywithHOCs,andhowtheyshouldbeconnectedtogether.

TheFireFlyHOCconsistsofanopticalmoduleanditsribbonfiberpigtail.TheribbonfiberisnormallyterminatedonthefarendwithanMPOstylemulti-channelopticalconnector.MPOconnectorsareavailablein12or24opticalchannels,andcanbeconfiguredasmaleorfemale.OnecommonbrandofMPOconnectoristheMTP™,madebyUSConec.Othertypesofopticalconnectorscanbeinstalleduponrequest.However,MPOisbyfarthemostcommonlyused.

TheMPOendoftheHOCispluggedintoabulkheadmountedOPA.ThesameisdonewiththeHOCattheremoteequipment.AlongFOPCisusuallyusedtoconnectbetweenthetwosystems.

ThebasepartnumberforaFireFlycableisECUO-xxx.Thelast3charactersofthebasepartnumberdefinethecableconfiguration.Table1listsallthepossiblehalfcableconfigurations.

Aswillbedescribedindetailinthefollowingsections,theMPObulkheadadaptersandtheFOPCsareavailableindifferentconfigurations,whichaffecthowtheopticalsignalsaremappedontotheconnectors.Furthermore,SamtecusesaspecificsignalmapbetweenthefiberribboncableoftheHOCandtheMPOconnector.Becauseofthis,itisnecessarytousetheproperMPOadapterandFOPCconfiguration.Otherwise,end-to-endconnectivitymaynotbeachievedbetweentheHostandRemoteTransmit(Tx)andReceive(Rx)opticalchannels.ThepurposeofthisapplicationnoteistodefinetheproperconfigurationstobeusedwithSamtecHOCs,basedontheintendedapplication.

2 MPOConnectorsMPO connectors arewidely used in parallel optical applications. TheMPO connector provides a highdensity optical connectivity solution, together with a mechanical mechanism to provide positivelatching. TheMPO connectors used in Samtec half optical cables are configured in either 12 or 24opticalchannels.ApairofMPOconnectorscanbematedthroughabulkheadmountedMPOadapter,whichoccupiesverylittlespaceontheequipmentpanel.

Figure3showsa12channelmaleMPOconnector.TheMPOconnectorconsistsofaMTferrule,MPOhousing,andalatchingmechanism.ThemaleMTferrulecontainsthe12opticalchannelsandtheguidepins.AfemaleMTferrulehasholesthataccepttheguidepinsfromthemaleMTferrule.The12opticalchannelsarearranged ina single rowon theMT ferrule. Ina24channelMPOconnector, theopticalchannelsarearrangedin2rowsof12channelseach.

TheferruleisinstalledintotheMPOhousing.TheMPOhousinghasaguidekey,whichensuresthattheopticalchannelnumbersareorientedproperlywith respect to theMPOadapter.TheMPOhousing isenclosed by a spring loaded latchingmechanism.When twoMPO cables aremated through aMPObulkhead adapter, the spring loaded latching mechanism keeps the two MT ferrules firmly seatedagainsteachother.ItisimportantthatthetwoMTferrulesarefirmlyseatedagainsteachotherinordertoeliminateanyairgap,whichminimizestheopticalattenuationthroughthematedconnectorpair.

3 MPOBulkheadAdaptersasOpticalPanelAdaptersTheMPObulkheadopticalpaneladapters(OPA)areavailablein2differentconfigurations,definedbytherelativeorientationoftheconnectorkeysoneachendoftheadapter:

• Opposed• Aligned

Opposedadaptershavetheconnectorkeysonoppositesidesoftheadapter(thekeysareopposingeachother).TheresultisthattheMPOconnectorswhichplugintotheadapterwillberotated180degreesinrelationtoeachother.Alignedadaptershavetheconnectorkeysonthesamesideoftheadapter(keysalignedwitheachother).Theresultisthattheconnectorswillbealignedinrelationtoeachother.SamteccansupplytheMPOadapters,ortheycanbepurchasedfromothervendors.TheMPOadapterswillworkwitheither12or24channelMPOconnectors.Figure4showsthetwotypesofMPObulkheadadapters.

4 FiberOpticPatchCablesInaHalf-Cableapplication,aFiberOpticPatchCable (FOPC) is typicallyused toconnectbetween thehost and target PCIe® equipment, at theMPObulkhead adapters. The FOPCs are available in variouslengths.SamteccansupplytheFOPCs,ortheycanbepurchasedfromvarioussuppliers.LiketheMPOconnectors,theyareavailablewith12or24opticalchannels.

Patch cables are commonly available in 2 different styles, depending on how the optical fibers aremappedonto theFOPCMPOconnector. Themap scheme is referred toas thepolarityof theopticalsignals.

Figure5showstheopticalsignalmapfor12channelgenericpatchcables,ofTypeAandTypeB.ATypeA cablemaps pin 1 on one end of the cable to pin 1 on the other end, and pin 2 to pin 2, etc. It issometimesreferredtoasa“straightthrough”cable.ATypeBcableflipsthechannelsbetweenends.Inotherwords,pin1ofoneendconnectstopin12ontheotherend,pin2topin11,etc.Itissometimesreferred to as an “inverted” cable. Samtec only supplies the Type B FOPC, but it is important tounderstandthedifferencesbetweenthetwocabletypes.

5 HalfCableBack-to-BackOperationwithoutPatchCablesInsomeinstances, itmaybedesirabletooperatetwoFireFlyHOCs inaback-to-backconfiguration. Inthis application, the MPO ends of the two cables are simply connected together, through an MPOadapter,withoutusingapatchcable.

Typicalapplicationsare:aquickloopbacktest,ortoevaluatehalfcableconnectivityovervariouslengthsorwithmultiplehost/targetcombinations.

CaremustbetakentousetheproperpolarityMPOadapter,aswillbedescribed laterforeachoftheFireFlyhalfcables.

6 ECUO–T12toECUO–R12This section describes the back-to-back configuration for two ECUO 12 channel unidirectional cables,onecablebeinga12channelTX(ECUO-T12)andtheotherbeinga12channelRX(ECUO-R12).

Figure7showsthesignalmapforback-to-backoperationoftwoHOCs.Bothofthesehalf-cablesusea12channelMPOconnector.NotethatanopposedMPOadapterisrequired.Followingthesignalflow,Tx1ontheleft-handcableconnectstoRx1ontheright-handcable,andsoon,withallTxchannelsononecablebeingconnectedtothecorrespondingRxchannelontheothercable,andviceversa.

7 ECUO–T12toFOPCtoECUO–R12This section describes the configuration where an ECUO-T12 half cable and an ECUO-R12 half cableare joined using a 12 fiber FOPC. These half cables each have a 12 fiberMPO connector. One cablecontains a 12 channel Tx (-T12) and the other contains a 12 channel Rx (-R12). As was mentionedearlier,thisisacommonapplicationwhentheoptical linkmustbepassedthroughabulkheadateachcableend.

Figure8showsthesignalmapforthisconfigurationwhenaFOPCisused.NotethatonealignedandoneopposedMPOadapterarerequired.Tracingthesignalflowthroughthediagram,itisseenthatalltheTxchannelsononecableconnectwiththecorrespondingRxchannelontheothercable,andviceversa.

8 ECUO–Y12toECUO–Y12This section describes the back-to-back configuration for two ECUO –Y12 HOCs. Each –Y12 cablecontainsa12channelTxanda12channelRxjoinedtogetherina“Y”cable,andterminatedina24fiberMPOconnector.

Figure10shows thesignalmap forback-to-backoperationof these twoHOCs.Note thatanopposedMPO adapter is required. Following the signal flow, Tx on the left-hand cable connects to Rx on theright-handcable,andsoon,withallTxchannelsononecablebeingconnectedtothecorrespondingRxchannelontheothercable,andviceversa.
