What is a BER?A Building Energy Rating or BER is an energy label with accompanying advisory report for homes. The rating is a simple A to G scale. A rated homes are the most energy efficient and will tend to have the lowest energy bills.

At Firebird Heating Solutions we strive to help home owners obtain the most effective way of heating their home. For new build homes the Building Regulations 2011 Part L require a 60% improvement in energy efficiency which typically equates to a BER A rating for new builds. The BER rating is determined by completing a Dwelling Energy Assessment Procedure (DEAP) to ensure that the new home complies with the Building Regulations. At design stage the most effective way of showing compliance with the regulations is to submit a provisional BER assessment from the DEAP software. Firebird have successfully worked with all types of professionals to help bring their developments from design to construction phase. As part of our work in this area we assist and meet professionals to ensure that their dwelling achieves compliance with a range of our energy efficient heating solutions.

Use of 5kW wood burning stove with room sealed kit means an open flue can be deleted and a permanent air vent in the wall to feed combustion is not required.

The thermal bridging factor can be improved once a “junction detail” has been specified and approved by the assigned certifier in accordance with TGD L 2011 1.3.3.

Firebird Enviromax Blue Supreme is Europe’s most efficient oil boiler rated at 97.4%. This extra efficiency helps to achieve an even better energy rating for the home.

Firebird Heating Solutions have corrected the misconception of oil-generated heating devices not achieving high BER ratings.

Firebird Heating Solutions’ engineer team, in co-operation with BER assessors, have completed a vast number of assessments and are achieving at least an A3 rating, with

their total heating solution of the Firebird oil boiler, solar thermal and smoke exempt wood burning dry stove.

Firebird Heating Solutions produce quality-heating products and have done so for over 30 years. Liam Maddock, technical manager of Firebird, notes: “It is key that the design and build team speak with the householder on the various heating options available.

“It is the responsibility of the team to ensure the householder obtains the dwelling they want and a key factor to this is that they are given heat and comfort, especially when they require it. We are all aware that the regulations require us to build more energy-conscious houses with respect to insulation, heating and

orientation.”

A BER assessment is designed to determine the heat efficiency of the dwelling and in turn, save householders money on their fuel bills. BER ratings have generated significant discussions over the last year since the Building Control (Amendment) Regulations came into effect on 1 March 2014.
