AchievAL™ FRH Inhibitors / Maintenance Fluids

Advantage Dist. & Lubricants, LLC offers two superior inhibitors for enhancing waterglycol (HFC-type) fire resistant hydraulic fluid properties. These inhibitors are specially-formulated to improve the properties of existing new or used products where the performance components have depleted over time.

AchievAL™ FRH RA Inhibitor

This specialty fluid is designed to boost the reserve alkalinity of used water-glycol (HFC-type) fire resistant hydraulic fluids. Its purpose is to replenish the vapor phase corrosion inhibitor, as well as other corrosion inhibitors, while maintaining expected anti-wear properties.

AchievAL™ FRH AW Inhibitor

This fluid is specially designed to boost the performance of existing new or used water-glycol (HFC-type) fire resistant hydraulic fluids where extra anti-wear and corrosion protection may be required.

Change-Out Procedure

When converting a system to AchievAL™ FRH2 200* from either a conventional mineral oil based fluid or another type

of fire resistant or synthetic fluid, it is important that the following procedures be used:

1. Drain oil from system completely. Particularattention should be paid to the reservoir, fluid lines, cylinders, accumulators, filters and other equipmentwhere residual oil may be trapped.

2. Clean the system of residual sludge and deposits.Remove any paints from the inside of the reservoirunless it has been tested and found to be resistantto the softening effect of HFC water/glycol. Steamcleaning is very effective. The use of carbontetrachloride or other chlorinated metal cleanersshould be avoided.

3. Remove or disconnect all filters.

4. Flush the system with a minimum quantity of flushinitially by operating at no load or at minimumpressure then bring the fluid up to normal temperatureand operate all parts. Many users follow the practiceof operating on the initial flush for several hours toensure complete circulation has occurred.

5. Drain the flushing charge as completely as possiblewhile it is still warm and without allowing it tosettle. This fluid can be retained for further useafter the suspended solids have settled and residualpetroleum oil has been separated. With properattention to removal of suspended contaminants, the flushing fluid can be used in preparing othermachines for service.

6. If a filter is used, install a clean filter cartridge.Replace filter elements having zinc or cadmiumplated parts with appropriate substitutes. Do not usea highly absorptive filter medium such as activatedclay or Fuller’s Earth since these filters may alter fluidchemistry by removing essential additives.

7. Examine pump parts, O-rings, and auxiliaryequipment. Worn out pump parts should bereplaced. Leaking pipe joints should be repaired anddeteriorated gaskets, seals and packing(s) should bereplaced in order to minimize fluid loss. Cork shaftseals should be replaced if they are used within thesystem.

8. Reconnect the system and tighten all joints andconnections.

9. Fill system with fresh selected AchievAL™FRH product.

10. Operate at reduced pressure to ensure properlubrication of hydraulic pump then bring up tostandard operating temperatures.

During the first few weeks of operation, particular attention should be paid to the filters and inlet screens. They may become clogged by sludge and deposits that have been loosened by the solvent action of AchievAL™ FRH. Such blockages may cause pump starvation, noisy operation and higher pump wear rates. Therefore, filter cartridges should be replaced and inlet screens cleaned as often as needed.

Materials of Construction for Water-Glycol HFC Fluids

• Packing and Hoses: Natural rubber, BR,SBR, NBR (including carboxylate nitrileseals), Q, CFM, and IIR rubbers can beused as packing materials, as well asPTFE. Polyurethane-based elastomers, asbestos, leather and cork materialpacking are not suitable since theyabsorb water.

• High pressure or maximum pressurehoses and packing with wire, cotton, orsynthetic fiber inserts and a coating ofnatural rubber or the above syntheticsmay be used without restrictions.

• FXM elastomers including brands suchas Viton are safe for use with water-glycol HFC fluids.

• Board and paper material should notbe used for flange and cover seals. Fluidpacking compounds or mastics shouldbe used sparingly, so that these do notget into the fluid circuit and lead tovalve blockages.

• Water-glycol HFC fluids may dissolveor soften certain pipe thread dopes. It is recommended that either Teflonpressure tape or pipe compounds thathave water-glycol compatibility beused. The use of soda-based greases inand around hydraulic circuits shouldbe avoided due to their proneness toemulsify with water-glycol fluids. Greaseselection should be restricted to thosehaving good water tolerance such aslithium, calcium, aluminum complex, and calcium sulfonate complex.

• Water-glycol HFC fluids, because of theirsolvent action, are not compatible withconventional industrial paints. When asystem is converted to water-glycol HFCfluids, all internal paints known to beadversely affected should be removedand the surface either left unpainted ortreated with a coating that is resistantto water-glycol solution, such as epoxyresin or phenolic resin paints.

• Water-glycol HFC fluids are compatiblewith the metals normally employedin hydraulic systems. They shouldnot be used in systems incorporatingmagnesium alloys, because of theirreactivity with water. Zinc and cadmiumplated parts should be avoided.

Corrosion Testing

At KOST USA, specializes in corrosion testing designed to estimate the corrosion behavior of alloys in various environments. Our technical experts assemble customized tests to simulate a variety of atmospheric and environmental service conditions. These methods are used to:

• Identify performance parameters of a product, component or material

• Identify areas more prone to corrosion attack(such as cracks and crevices)

• Determine if a product’s materials are suitedfor a specific environment

• Utilize the test data generated to makeproduct improvements

• Testing of materials to verify conformationto various industry standards including ASTM

Corrosion Testing Method

This method is a simple beaker evaluation of the effects of a fluid on metal specimens under controlled laboratory conditions. Specimens of a metal are totally immersed in aerated solutions prepared with corrosive salts for 240 hours (10 days) at 88°C (190°F). The corrosion inhibition properties of the test solutions are evaluated on the basis of the weight change by the metal specimens. This test method will generally distinguish between fluids that are definitely deleterious from the corrosion standpoint and those that are suitable for further evaluation. The results of this test method cannot stand alone as evidence of satisfactory corrosion inhibition.

Results: Free and clear; no rust.
