Engineering Capabilities

One of Cla-Val’s most unique characteristics is the strong focus we place on con-tinuous improvement in our products and manufacturing processes. This focus ispersonified by our in-house Engineering Department. They work hand-in-hand withour customers to develop real-world solutions to help them meet their operationalchallenges, such as the recently developed KO Anti-Cavitation valve trim picturedbelow. Cla-Val Engineers continue to create products that ultimately become theindustry standard.

Utilizing a wide array of the most advanced technical software,including custom programs developed in-house, our Engineers ana-lyze product applications, and study our customers’ fluid handlingsystems to characterize conditions such as Cv, surge, flow, and thepotential for valve cavitation noise and damage. This expertiseenables our Engineers to take the data they gather and determinewhich flow or pressure control products will best meet our customers’system requirements in the most operationally efficient and costeffective manner.

Beyond analyzing and understanding our customers’ existing requirements, Cla-Val Engineering uses the latest in solid modeling designsoftware to develop new products to meet the ever-changing requirements of the industries we serve. Cla-Val Cavitation Solutions for Fire Protection Valves

Patent Pending

Because of the type of service they perform, valves used in fire protection systems are often subjected to extreme pressuredifferentials and high velocity flow conditions which can, in turn, significantly increase the likelihood of cavitation noise anddamage. Valves supplied with Cla-Val’s KO Anti-Cavitation trim are an ideal solution to this problem.

Constructed of 316 stainless steel as standard (also available in Monel for seawater service), the seat and disc guide featuredual interlocked sleeves containing radial slots that deflect internal flow to impinge upon itself, harmlessly dissipating poten-tial noise and cavitation damage. The cast radial slots, for which there is a patent pending, create a larger flow path than ispossible with the standard drilled holes typically used by other anti-cavitation valves currently available in the marketplace.The uniquely designed radial slots in the seat and disc guides also lessen the possibility of fouling if small particles are pres-ent in the water.

Valves equipped with Cla-Val’s KO Anti-Cavitation trim provide optimum internal pressure control while virtually eliminatingnoise and damage associated with cavitation.

Understanding Cavitation

The first step in fighting cavitation is understanding which partof your system is vulnerable to extreme pressure fluctuations.The most effective way to achieve that understanding is byhaving your system analyzed by Cla-Val’s team of engineer-ing specialists using the CLA-CAV Cavitation AnalysisProgram.

CLA-CAV analyzes the physical characteristics and operatingconditions provided by a system designer or operator and mod-els the performance of Cla-Val valves under those conditions.Using valve size; maximum and minimum flow rate;static/dynamic inlet and outlet pressure; water temperature;and elevation above sea level, CLA-CAV can accurately predictif and when a valve will experience critical, damaging or chok-ing cavitation.

Armed with this data, our application specialists can advisewhich valve or valve combination will be best suited to handlea given system’s flow control requirements.

CLA-CAV Cavitation Analysis Program is part of Cla-Val’s con-tinuing commitment to providing superior technical support toour customers.
