Cause and Origin Evidence Update: How Daubert, 921, and New Accelerants

Can Hinder Arson Investigations

Dr. John D. DeHaan, CFI,CFEI, PhD – Fire-Ex Forensics Glenn W. Johnson – CFI - Q.Global

Did you know that a Daubert motion raised before or during an arson trial can result in dismissing your expert witness testimony, K9 assisted findings, or lab analysis? Can you identify the latest vehicle and household fuels that may be used to intentionally start a fire? Do you know how to detect them? Join these two leading arson investigation experts, as they explain Daubert motions, and why arson trial judges are now determining the scientific validity of evidence, how data was obtained, and its reliability and relevancy. Learn why your current arson investigation practices must comply with the latest standards of 921, especially when the cause of a fire is “undetermined,” and what to do if the cause cannot be “proven.” Discover the latest, easily obtained fuels and water-soluble accelerants and why it is difficult to detect them. The importance of comparison and reference samples will be

stressed.
