Exiting Box 3 (the realm of Fire and Ice)

1) Keep the main thing the main thing 2) Shift the church’s focus outward 3) Seek to be Unique

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” Jesus (Matthew 7:13 - 14)

Seek Waypoints instead of SMART Goals Smart Goals: • Create winners and losers • Polarizes the two vectors (Evangelism vs. Mission/Discipleship) • Are taken from the business world without theological reflection • Are Guilt-driven

Waypoints • Emphasize teamwork • Sees the two Vectors as complimentary • Supports a Journey narrative • Teaches discernment as an ongoing process “If you think you can see God’s will laid out neatly before you for the next five, ten, or twenty years as a clearly defined path, this is emphatically not the will of God. But if you sense that the next hesitant step you are about to make into an uncertain future is somehow directed by God, that is most probably God’s will for you.”- from a participant in Wendy Wright workshop, Companions in Christ: Participant’s Book p. 236 [also George Donigan’s Three Prayers You’ll Want to Pray]
