About lund university
Lund University was founded in 1666.
Today it is an international centre for
research and education and has ap-
proximately 47 000 students. The Uni-
versity has evolved into one of the most
internationalised universities in Swe-
den, co-operating worldwide with a
great number of universities, university
networks and research institutes. Annu-
ally some 3,000 international students
choose to study in Lund. The University
has exchange agreements with approxi-
mately 600 universities in more than
50 countries worldwide, including more
than 400 within EU’s Erasmus pro-
gramme. With a strong international
profile, Lund University offers a rich
and diverse student and academic body
where you can meet people from all
over the world, soak up the Swedish
culture and even learn a new language.
With eight faculties and many research
centres and specialized schools, Lund
University is the largest institution for
research and higher education in Swe-
den. The majority of the University is
located in Lund, but there are also
campuses in the nearby towns of
Malmö and Helsingborg. As a FIPDes
student, you will belong to the Faculty
of Engineering (LTH).

Calendar
The academic year is divided into two
semesters, approx. 20 weeks each.
The autumn semester starts with the
introduction week on Tuesday 19 Au-
gust. At LTH each semester is divided
into two study periods. The study peri-
ods consist of seven weeks followed by
periods of examinations.
The spring semester 2015 is dedicat-
ed to your master’s degree project. If
you have missed an examination dur-
ing autumn you may have additional
chances to re-exam during period 3
and 4.
Examinations
A combination of various examinations
at the end of a course is the most com-
mon form of evaluation. For example,
written reports, that may be presented
orally to the lecturer or to a group of
other students, combined with a poster
session or a written exam are common
means of evaluating the performance
of students.
Written exams
The length of the exam can vary from 4
to 6 hours. During the written exam,
invigilators will answer any general
questions and ensure a controlled envi-

ronment. The responsible lecturer is
normally available during parts of the
exam to answer more specific ques-
tions. You may bring drinks or snacks
to the exam. You are not allowed to
communicate with each other during
the examination. Moreover, you must
bring a valid identity card to an exam.
You can also bring permissible accesso-
ries such as pencil, ruler and eraser.
Credits
Academic studies in Sweden are orga-
nized around a credit system where 1.5
higher education credits are equivalent
to one week of full-time studies. 60
credits equal to full-time studies during
one academic year (i.e. 40 weeks).
Grading scales
The grading scale comprises four lev-
els: U (failure), 3 (three), 4 (four), 5
(five). A higher figure signifies a better
grade. The grades are criterion-
referenced, e.g. awarded in relation to
the students’ performance relative to
learning objectives set out in the course
syllabus.
Arrival day/Introduction weeks
On 19 August, Lund University organ-
izes the Arrival day for all international
students. Then you have to be in Lund!
The Arrival marks the start of the in-
troduction weeks, which aim to help
you settle in smoothly at the university
and in the student life of Lund. For
example, you will get help concerning:
Internet access
E-mail address
Access card to campus
Swedish “personnummer” (social
security/personal identity num-
ber)
Financial matters
During this time you will gain insights
into Swedish culture and academics,
and have great fun together with other
international and Swedish students.
Mentors can give you additional help on
practical matters and student life. The
excursion tour and welcome party are
always highly appreciated by previous
international students.
Note that only during these weeks you
will get this structured help and sup-
port from the university. Once the se-
mester has started, you will have very
limited time to arrange all these practi-
cal matters.

Lund University
Lund is a small university city. For
means of transportation within Lund
we advice you to get a bike. Nearly all
of your courses will be held at Ingvar
Kamprad Design Centre (IKDC). It is
situated in the northeast part of the
Faculty of Engineering LTH. It is very
close to Kårhuset, the place of the LTH
international office.

Lund’s student life is unique. The com-
bination of nations (primarily social
clubs), student unions and the Aca-
demic Society (culture and media ac-
tivities) is not only one of a kind, it is
one of the strongest reasons why new
students flock to Lund every semester.
Membership of Studentlund gives you
access to everything that makes Lund
such a fantastic city to study in, and it
means that you are a member of three
organisations – a student union, a
nation and the Academic Society (AF).
Especially the nations will give you
access to events, parties, organized
lunches, “sittningar” (dinner parties).
and other social activities. The student
union at the Faculty of Engineering,
TLTH, is also supporting international
students by arranging social events, a
career fair and by safeguarding stu-
dent rights. When you have paid your
fee (approx. 250 SEK), your student
card will be sent to your Swedish ad-
dress.
Learning Swedish?
As a master student, you will
be offered a course in Swedish, organ-
ised by the Division of External Rela-
tions at Lund University. Sign up early
if you are interested! You can also par-
ticipate in the Swedish language in-
struction for immigrants (SFI), run by
the city of Lund. This requires that you
get a Swedish social security number. If
you have this interest, please contact
Komvux Lund, phone +46 46 35 71 00.

Examinations
Attend all examinations the first time
as you will only have three or less
chances per year on each course. Do
your very best to pass the first exam.
Literature
You are expected to buy your own copy
of the required literature. Neither the
school nor the teachers have any possi-
bility to lend you any books. Literature
that you can read (not borrow) might
be found in the library.
Study technique
Study at a Swedish university involves a
lot of self-studies, group works and
seminars. It is therefore important that
you take an active part in all parts of
your education. Study continuously,
not just the weeks before the exam.
Your work load will be at least 40 hours
a week.
Seminars and group works
These study forms require that you
take an active part in the collective
work in the group. Failure to do so will
lead to a fail on that course.
Deadlines
Failure to hand in a task or report be-
fore the deadline may lead to that you
fail that course. Meeting deadlines are
extremely important in Sweden.
Be on time
It is very important that you are on
time and well prepared for lectures,
seminars, etc. Coming late to compul-
sory activities may lead to failure of the
course.

Once you have chosen to go to Lund
you will get registered at the Faculty
of Engineering, Lund University and
your international coordinator will
prepare your “Letter of Invita-
tion” (letter of acceptance).
The invitation letter will be sent to you
personally. It is needed for your resi-
dence permit and housing application.
Once you have your “Letter of invita-
tion” it is important that you apply for
Swedish student residence permit as
soon possible. The application process
can take several months depending on
your citizenship. You apply online at
the Swedish Migration Board webpage.
EU citizen
As an EU citizen you are entitled to
study in Sweden without a residence
permit. From 1 May 2014 you no long-
er need to register your right of resi-
dence.
NON EU/EEA citizen and Switzerland
You must apply for a residence permit from your country of origin, or where you are residing legally and your per-mit must be complete before you can enter Sweden. This applies even if you have a residence permit for studies in another EU country, giving you the right to for instance visit Sweden for three months. Read information on how to apply here:

Housing
Application for housing in Lund is done
online and handled by Lund University
Accommodation office (LUACC). The
application period is in early April each
year. In order to be considered for a
room you must be admitted to studies
at Lund University (confirmed in your
“Letter of Invitation”) and you must
submit your housing application before
the deadline. Once you have applied it
is VERY important that you follow your
application status online.
As a FIPDes student you do not have
housing guarantee. However, you are
highly prioritized and your internation-
al coordinator, Helene von Wachenfelt,
is in direct contact with LUACC during
the entire application process to ensure
the best service possible.
You will receive the link to the online housing application and instructions regarding the application process dur-ing March.
Rooms in dedicated student residences are usually furnished (bed, study table, chair). Things like pillows, duvets and mattress covers can preferably be bought during the organized trip to Ikea during the introduction weeks.

The key: Swedish personal identity number
If you have a residence permit valid
for at least 12 months, you should as
soon as possible register in the Popu-
lation Register (Folkbokföringen) in
Sweden. Then you will get your per-
sonal identity number. Population
registration is made by visiting the
local Swedish Tax Office once you
have arrived in Lund. Read infor-
mation on how to register here:
http://www.skatteverket.se/
Health care information
In case of illness you can call the
Health care information number, sev-
en days a week. Phone 1177 and a
registered nurse will give medical
advice on how to take care of yourself
or information on where you can go if
your condition calls for care by a phy-
sician. Provide your personal identity
number (see below).
Student counselling
There are student counsellors who are
trained social workers there to help
you if you are facing problems and
need someone to talk to. All your deal-
ings with the counsellor are strictly
confidential. The counsellor at
“Utbildningsservice” is Ulla Bergman.
You can contact to make an appoint-
ment, [email protected],
phone: +46 46 222 37 14.
Medical Insurance
EU/EEA citizen are required to bring a
European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
These cards are issued by the social
insurance office in your home country.
The card entitles you to access the Swe-
dish public medical services and pay
the same fees as Swedish patients. In
all these contacts, be prepared to pro-
vide your Swedish personal identity
number (see below). International stu-
dents (outside EU/EEA) holding a Swe-
dish personal identity number are enti-
tled to the same services as described
above and getting this number is there-
fore strongly recommended. It is your
responsibility to make sure you have
sufficient insurance coverage during
your stay in Lund. Remember to keep
receipts from medical treatment, for
later reimbursement from the insur-
ance company.
Medical centers in Lund
In case of emergencies go to Skåne
University Hospital or to Södertull
vårdcentral (Helgeandsgatan 16). Note
that waiting times can be long.

Financial matters
Currency
The Swedish currency is called
”krona” (SEK). Note that Euro is not
used in Sweden. One Euro is approxi-
mately 9 SEK.
Opening a bank account
To open an account in Sweden you will
need proof of admission from the uni-
versity, a valid passport and you must
also be registered at a Swedish ad-
dress. Swedish banks do not usually
charge a fee for opening an account
but there will usually be fees for their
different services. When you open an
account in Sweden you will receive an
IBAN (international bank account num-
ber) which you can use together with
the Bank’s SWIFT address to transfer
money from your bank abroad to your
new account in Sweden.
We recommend that you give someone
at home a power of attorney to trans-
fer money on your behalf. It usually
takes at least one week to transfer
money from your bank abroad to your
Swedish account. Please note that per-
sonal, traveller’s or international
cheques are not accepted by Swedish
banks.
Many of the financial matters will be
handled during the introduction weeks.
Summer internship
Several FIPDes students are offered an
internship during their stay in Sweden.
It is important to know that you will
have to pay Swedish tax on any intern-
ship salary but your Erasmus Mundus
scholarship is excluded and will not be
taxed.
