The Finnish Olympic Committee as well as all the athletes and officials on Finnish team in Nanjing are awaiting the Youth Olympic Games with a lot of expectations. The YOG is a unique event for the participating athletes and Nanjing organizers have done an outstanding job preparing the event. We firmly believe that the Games will be a great success.
Supporting youth elite sport is one of the main tasks of the Finnish Olympic Committee. It includes also participation at the youth sport events. Since 1991, over 1000 young Finnish athletes have participated in the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in 25 different sports. Finnish ath-letes have also participated in first two editions of the YOG, Singapore 2010 and Innsbruck 2012. Altogether 61 athletes took part in these two events, winning 7 medals. The experience from the participation at these events is valued very positively among the athletes and we expect same to be the case also with this edition of the YOG.
Finnish Team comprises 14 athletes – 8 boys and 6 girls. They will compete in 8 sports – aquatics, archery, boxing, gymnastics, golf, sailing, shooting and volleyball. For most of the athletes on the team it is their first big international event.
Finnish athletes will strive for victories and success. But the medals are not the main reason for participation at this wonderful event. Gaining experience and increasing motivation to train even harder to become an elite athlete is what matters.

“Be part of a life-changing experience that goes beyond competition!”That’s how the IOC welcomes our fantastic Team Finland among all the other 203 nationalities for our exceptional trip to Nanjing. It means that in addition to competing, our 14 athletes will learn a lot about different cultures, Olympism, healthy lifestyle, career planning, global issues and much more. They will learn what it means to be a responsible athlete living by the Olympic Values of excellence, respect and friendship. In the YOG, the participants are able to engage, interact and learn from each other as well as meet their role models and get advice from them. And what’s the most important – to have FUN.
I am more than happy and honored to be the Young Ambassador for our enthusiastic young athletes and make them get the most out of their first Olympic experience. We have a super team, who will undoubtedly do their best in their own sports, but also in cheering the other teammates for their best as well. That’s the true Olympic Spirit.
Let’s enjoy our exciting experience and make the most out of it! Let’s Rock the YOG!
