STAINLESS Steel Pipes & Tubes
Stainless Steel is a metal with a number of great qualities. It is bright and attractive. It
is easy to clean. It emits an aura of quality. And it is as 'stainless' as its name suggests
giving it an everlasting shine . SS ornamental tubing market is growing exponentially
because of substantially increasing usage of SS in architecture, building &
construction (ABC) segment. It is used by Architects, City planners, Airport Designers, Rail coach Manufacturers,
Furniture manufacturers, etc. to give a place aesthetic beauty, longevity combined
with strength. But all of this comes at a HUGE COST, both commercial as well as
environmental.
The hosting of Commonwealth games in India in 2010, the retail revolution,
modernization of cities, bus stops, railways, airports and the economic growth of
India has contributed to the rapid growth of the stainless steel tube industry. Against
the steady and robust growth in the economy, the stainless steel usage in the country #has also been growing at a faster clip of about 13%.
Gone are the days when one had to pay a hefty price for the same. Smart’s Stainless
Composite tubes are a revolutionary breakthrough in the Stainless Steel Tube market.

Steel in grades S304, S316 & structural Mild Steel in grades IS513. These are
available in standard tube sizes in a variety of wall thickness.
There are many reasons for choosing SMART Tubes. They are the ‘in budget’
composite tubes which can be WELDED, BENT, POWDER COATED & have the
original shine, properties & usage of costly stainless steel tubes.
Each industry has its own codes. In marine environments, corrosion resistance is
a priority. In architecture, the aesthetic elegance and self-repairing properties
are much appreciated. In the food and beverage industry, the hygienic
advantages of stainless steel are vital. The combination of strength together with
high fire resistance offers considerable advantages in all kinds of structures.

SS304 Composite Tubes vs. “New 200 Series” Stainless Steel Tubes
Chrome-Manganese non-magnetic steel grades have been gaining market lately due to low cost. They are having company
specific names as grades as they do not comply with any national or international standards of stainless steel. But in the
market, they are referred to as SS 200 series material. These materials have Nickel as low as 0.20% and Chromium as low as
13% as against 4-6% Nickel and 17-19% Chromium in actual Stainless Steel of 202 grade. SS 304 grade is superior grade
with 8-10.5% Nickel and 17.5-19.5% Chromium.
These “New 200 series” grades have been developed for certain niche applications like utensils for better drawability and
formability. But due to cheaper prices and non-magnetic characteristics, they are now getting used in applications for which
they are not at all recommended.
In a study done by M/s. International Stainless Steel Forum
(Brussels, Belgium) called “New 200-series Steels An Opportunity
or a threat to the image of Stainless Steel?”, corrosion resistance of
these grades against SS304 has been compared. The lowest grade
Chrome-Manganese steel considered for the study was with 15%
Chromium and 1% Nickel. So, the result with the material currently
sold in Indian market will certainly be much worse than those. We
reproduce here a graph for pitting corrosion resistance from the
study:
Since these grades are non-magnetic and equally shiny in the
beginning, they are not identifiable without sophisticated chemical
testing. This, many times, leads to mislabelling and fraud in the long
chain between the manufacturer and consumer and gets sold as
SS304 material. With S304 Composite Tubes, you can be sure that
the material used is of SS304 grade and if used appropriately, will
last as long as pure SS304 material in the same application.
We sometimes feel that protection of SS304 is not required in indoor
applications. But we forget that everyday usage articles also have
many chemicals which lead to corrosion. Acetic acid is present in
vinegar. When milk deteriorates, lactic acid is produced. Citric acid is
commonly present in fruit juices. Soap has Fatty Acids. Chloride
Salts are most commonly occurring substances in nature. All these
add to corrosion. So, it is always better to use SS304. And best to
use SCP-manufactured through finite engineering for similar
protection at much lower cost.
Corrosion resistance in a chloride-
containing solutionAfter a 575-hour salt-spray test on “304” chrome-
nickel, 4% Ni and 1% Ni, the 4% Ni, 1% Ni
samples showed signifi cant corrosion. These
chrome-manganese grades are unsuitable for
marine-environment applications.
The following image shows corrosion resistance of these Chrome-Manganese grade steels against SS304 in 24 days in a
salt-spray test.

FAQs
Q. How is SMART stainless steel composite tubing made?A. Mild steel strip of requisite grade is rolled and HF welded into a tube. Then, as the formed tube passes through the second welding heads, a sleeve of stainless steel strip is formed around the mild steel tube and TIG welded. The combination is passed through final rollers to straighten the tubes.
Q. What grade of stainless steel and mild steel does SMART use to manufacture stainless steel composite tubes?A. The stainless steel outer sleeve is in stainless steel grade 304 with 316 to follow. The mild steel is in grade IS513/S195/S235.
Q. How thick is the stainless steel layer and mild steel layer?A. Outer stainless steel layer thickness is 0.3mm and balance is mild steel layer of usually 0.9 to 1.2mm. But higher thicknesses of both MS (1 to 2.5mm) and SS (0.3-0.7mm) can be used for large requirements.
Q. Is the bond airtight?A. This is the heart of the technology. The sophisticated rolling process ensures that the stainless steel outer sleeve is rolled tightly around the mild steel core leaving no air gap.
Q. Can SMART tubes be bent and formed?A. The material can be manipulated in any way that would normally be used for stainless steel or mild steel. Standard elongation values of both the mild steel IS513 and stainless steel S304 shall be applicable. We recommend using rotary Draw bending with wiper die & flexible mandrel for good quality bending.
Q. Can SMART tubes be cut?A. Material can be cut using normal saw blades for stainless steel, e.g. 5/8 variable pitch or laser cutting using Oxygen or Nitrogen.
Q. Can SMART tubes welded?A. The material is welded as normal stainless steel e. g. TIG welding, MIG technique with argon shielding gas. Using SS309 electrode and at low amperage. Detailed welding instruction in different languages and video showing the manual welding are available on our website.
We care, We equip
Q. What is the life of stainless steel?A. The outer layer is made of recognised grades of stainless steel and has the usual inherent properties associated with the grade.
Q. What about internal corrosion of inner layer of mild steel?A. The ends of the tubes should be capped with stainless steel or joined by full welding to other similar sections, leaving the inner with no exposure to air or moisture to form corrosion. If done properly, there will not be any internal corrosion. Even if some air gap remains at the end, the corrosion rate due to indirect exposure to moist air will be very very slow.
Q. Will contact with Mild Steel induce corrosion in stainless steel?A. Not at all. On the contrary, MS will act as a sacrificial anode and enhance the corrosion resistance of SS layer.
Q. Is it possible to make specific tube sizes?A. Any size of tube from 19.05mm up to 63.50mm with various wall thicknesses can be made for regular requirement against order.
Q. What polished finish is available?A. Standard finish in production is bright polished or Mat finish but we can make the material in any particular polished finish for regular requirement against order.
Q. Can SMART tubes be painted?A. The material will easily take both wet paint and powder coating finishes provided normal priming and preparation is carried out.
Q. In what lengths is SMART available?A. The SMART material is manufactured in 6 meter lengths as standard though longer or shorter lengths are available upon request.
Q. Are bends & fittings of composite tubes available in the market?A. It will be our endeavor to provide bends & fittings made of clad tubes. But in case of nonavailability with your dealer, you can use bends and fittings of equivalent grade of SS tubes.
FAQs
