What’s Happening at SJECC:

A Prayer for World PeaceDear God, thank You for all creation. In the spirit of Jesus of Nazareth and all teachers of peace who inspire the many faith

traditions, help me and all the people of the world learn how to replace hate, war, oppression, and division with love, peace, freedom, and reconciliation. Help me to embody Your love in my relationships with my family, friends, strangers – even my

enemies. I commit myself to this sacred task throughout my life. So let it be. Amen.

Finish the Church: Capital Campaign SuccessWe are blessed to be back in our church, again whole with our enlivening faith environment. This new persistent message: Finish the Church, is our final push of the Capital Campaign, to complete the transformation of the entire campus and ensure our success for the next 30 years.

The Parish Family of Saint John truly believed in the Mission of our Capital Campaign: Build Our Future, Serve Our Past. Our vision was to become a beacon of community and faith here in Naples, renewed with our Life Center and campus as a “new wineskin” of Catholic engagement for decades to come. As such, we defined a strategy of incremental improvements to Saint John that could be achieved based on the success of the campaign.

To Know, To Love, and To Serve God in His Church and Our Community.

Capital Campaign Finish the Church: Capital Campaign Success

Continued from Page 1

Continued on Page 7

By the numbers, our Parish responded to this vision with substantial support. When we finally closed the initial campaign on March 8, 2018, (the three-year window allowed by the Diocese at the time), we had collected an impressive $11 million. And not just a small fraction of our Parish gave to this campaign. We had over 2,000 individuals and families participate, which is well over half of our Parish Family. The normal Catholic Church campaign currently has 27% participation in the U.S. We shattered that statistic, and we easily gathered enough for the construction of the Pulte Family Life Center, and much more to shape the future of the campus:

We were just about to identify the additional partial campus improvements we could move forward with the success of our campaign in September of 2017, when we had a visitor… Hurricane Irma.

July 14, 2019 ~ The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 9

According to Tolstoy, a drama does not tell us the whole of a person’s life. What it does is place a person in a situation. Then, from the way the person deals with that situation, his or her character is revealed to us.

This is precisely what Jesus does in his story. He places the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan in a situation. They are faced with a decision: To stop and help the wounded man, or to continue on about their own business? There is no escape for them, and no place to hide. They have to commit themselves one way or another. The priest and the Levite decide to pass by; the Samaritan decides to stop and help.

Crisis does not create character, it merely reveals it. In times of crisis people reveal what is already inside them – the generous person or the selfish person, the hero or the coward. One moment or event may cause a person to reveal his essential being. The encounter with the wounded man was such a moment for the priest, the Levite, and the Samaritan.

What did it reveal about the characters of the priest and Levite? It revealed a very damning thing, namely, that they were self-centered persons. They would not put themselves out to help another person. When the crunch came, they put themselves first.

And what did it reveal about the character of the Samaritan? A very admirable thing, namely, that he was a caring person. He was the kind of man who could not pass another human being in pain without wanting to relieve that pain.

Life is continually testing us. Everyday we are tested in little ways, and now and again in big ways. These tests reveal the kind of people we are – fundamentally unselfish people or fundamentally

selfish people.

Big opportunities are rare, and few could perform them. But we get many small, less spectacular opportunities to show care and concern for another human being in need.

The extent of our virtue is determined, not by what we do in extraordinary circumstances, but by our normal behavior. It is modest, everyday incidents rather than extraordinary ones that most reveal character. Every little action shapes our character.

Gospel Reflectionswith Father Tom

A Message to Our Young People from Pope Francis…“CHRIST IS ALIVE! He is our hope, and in a wonderful way, He brings youth to our world, and everything He touches becomes young, new, full of life! The very first words, then, that I would like to say to every young Christian are these: Christ is alive and wants you to be alive! He is in you, He is with you, and He never abandons you. However far you may wander, He is always there, the Risen One. He calls you, and He waits for you to return to Him and start over again. When you feel you are growing old out of sorrow, resentment or fear, doubt or failure, He will always be there to restore your strength and your hope.” (Christus Vivit 1-2).Come encounter Jesus with us! Please contact Natalie for more information on opportunities for our youth in the parish in regards to Faith Formation, Confirmation Preparation, Retreats, Scripture Study, and Service at 239-566-8740 or [email protected].

Ideas for Your Summer ReadThis time of year is the time that I look around for a book or two for a “summer read” and pass on ideas for books that you might find interesting. In past years, I’ve made some suggestions from my own library, both books I have read and re-read, and those still to be read. But, I also like to stretch myself and look for suggestions beyond my normal genre.

A few days ago, I scanned America Magazine’s newsletter and spotted an intriguing list from Vivian Cabrera, a writer at that Jesuit publication. She admitted facing a similar dilemma, what to read this summer. Her solution was to survey America editors and staff to get a list of titles they would recommend for a quick summer read—or perhaps a lengthy reading project.

This “eclectic list,” as she described it, may help you find a book or two that tickle your fancy. It contains fiction, non-fiction, and memoirs/essays, 18 books in all. Too many to describe on this page, so I just picked 4. But you can find the complete list at www.americamagazine.org/arts-culture.

Jack Kindsvater, Adult Faith Formation and RCIA Coordinator:

email [email protected] or call 239.566.8740 ext. 3918 and leave a message. I’ll return your call promptly.

American Moonshot: John F. Kennedy and the Great Space Race, by Douglas Brinkley

This is a great summer read for two reasons. First, this summer marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 landing on the Moon and of Neil Armstrong’s immortal words: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Second, it is the story of how J.F.K. came to see the lunar voyage as a great national endeavor, worthy of our effort and ambition. It showed how man can elevate himself by “reaching for the stars” and, at the same time, by realizing how vast the creation of God is. Most important, it recreates something we have sadly lost: a sense of adventure and the ability to imagine what can be. Joseph McAuley, assistant editor

Comedy Sex God, by Pete HolmesEverybody loves a good celebrity memoir. What’s even better, though, is a celebrity comedian memoir. Comedian Pete Holmes tells us all about his upbringing, from his childhood to his days at a Christian college to his marriage and divorce from his first wife, all while struggling to balance the idea of faith with his lived reality. It’s brilliant. Richard Rohr blurbs the book, saying: “Seldom do I read such creative and humorous writing—and have it be so profound and true at the same time.... Pete Holmes might just be the new Thomas Merton!” Same, Richard Rohr. Same. Vivian Cabrera, editorial assistant

Charming Billy, by Alice McDermottHow could a book that starts with a crowd of people drinking after a funeral not be a good summer read? Kerry Weber, executive editor

I Think You’re Wrong (but I’m Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations, by Beth A. Silvers

and Sarah Stewart HollandI know a book about politics does not sound like the ideal beach read, but the first presidential primary debates are coming (June 26 and 27), and we have to be ready. This new book from the hosts of the “Pantsuit Politics” podcast is a faith-filled, how-to guide for talking politics, disagreeing, and not killing anyone in the process. Beth and Sarah’s catchphrase is: “No shouting, no insults, plenty of nuance.” As the political climate heats up, I am trying to learn from Beth and Sarah how to disagree kindly and confidently—and maybe, despite the weather, to be less of a hothead.
