Highly desirable left and right bank Bordeaux from an impressiveBoston cellar. Maintained in ideal climate-controlled conditions andpicked up by Skinner staff.

1.Chateau Haut Brion 2000Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck, some with light bin abrasions to labels“It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with theperfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. However, it is not as fat, unctuous, flamboyant, or voluminous as La Mission. Yet, like a greatdiplomat, it is a wine of intensity, authority, and measured restraint. Asupremely elegant offering, its dense ruby/purple color, andburgeoning perfume of scorched earth, liquid minerals, plums, blackcurrants, cherries, lead pencil, and subtle spicy oak are followed by adelicate yet powerfully flavorful, multi-layered, highly nuanced, andextraordinarily pure and seamless wine. There have been so manyrecent classics from Haut-Brion, it is premature to suggest the 2000is better than the 1998, 1995, 1990, or 1989, but it is certainly aprodigious wine of dazzling persistence, length, and complexity. Ablend of 51% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% CabernetFranc, it should prove to be uncommonly long-lived, even by thestandards of Haut-Brion. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2040.” R. Parker,98 pts., 04/036 bottles$3,000-4,500

2.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: one into neck, three bottom neck, two very top shoulder, smallnicks to labels and small nicks to three capsules, two differentimporters“This is a denser version of the 1990 that stylistically reminds me ofwhat the young 1959 probably tasted like. Still backward with a deepruby/plum color revealing only a touch of lightening at the edge, thewine offers up an extraordinary nose of caramelized herbs, smoke, cedar, pen ink, black currants, and earth. The gorgeous aromatics arefollowed by a full-bodied, plump, rich, fleshy wine with low acidity. With 6-8 hours decanting in a closed decanter, it will offer beautifuldrinking, but it needs another 5-8 years to reach full maturity. It iscapable of lasting 50-60 years. This classic Lafite is not as fat andconcentrated as the 1982 Latour, nor as complex or concentrated asthe 1982 Mouton Rothschild, but it is a winner all the same.” R.Parker, 97 pts., 06/096 bottles$15,000-20,000

3.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1982Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: very top shoulderR. Parker, 97+ pts., 06/091 magnum$4,000-6,000

4.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck, light bin wear to some labels, light capsule wear, twodifferent importers“The 1986 possesses outstanding richness, a deep color, mediumbody, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. Thepenetrating fragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is ahallmark of this wine. Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, as well asmedium to full-bodied, with awesome extraction of fruit, this Lafitehas immense potential. Patience is required. Anticipated maturity:2000-2030.” R. Parker, 99 pts., 10/9412 bottles$9,500-14,500

5.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1986Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: into neckR. Parker, 99 pts., 10/941 magnum$2,000-2,500

6.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1988Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all bottom neck or better6 bottles$2,500-3,500

7.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1990Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neckR. Parker, 96 pts., 06/096 bottles$2,500-3,500

8.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck“Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild isunquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. As I indicatedlast year, only 38% of the crop was deemed grand enough to be putinto the final blend, which is atypically high in Cabernet Sauvignon(83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot, and 3%Petit Verdot). This massive wine may be the biggest, largest-scaledLafite I have ever tasted. It will require many years to come around,so I suspect all of us past the age of fifty might want to give seriousconsideration as to whether we should be laying away multiple casesof this wine. It is also the first Lafite-Rothschild to be put into a newengraved bottle (designed to prevent fraudulent imitations). The wineexhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purple color, and a knock-out nose oflead pencil, minerals, flowers, and black currant scents. Extremelypowerful and full-bodied, with remarkable complexity for such ayoung wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extract and richness, yethas managed to preserve its quintessentially elegant personality. Thiswine is even richer than it was prior to bottling. It shouldunquestionably last for 40-50 years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.The wine of the vintage?” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/996 bottles$4,500-6,000

9.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1998Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck“A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this winerepresents only 34% of Lafite’s total harvest. In a less than perfectMedoc vintage, it has been spectacular since birth, putting on moreweight and flesh over the last year. This opaque purple-colored 1998is close to perfection. The spectacular nose of lead pencil, smoky, mineral, and black currant fruit soars majestically from the glass. Thewine is elegant yet profoundly rich, revealing the essence of Lafite’scharacter. The tannin is sweet, and the wine is spectacularly layeredyet never heavy. The finish is sweet, super-rich, yet impeccablybalanced and long (50+ seconds). Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035. “R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/016 bottles$3,000-4,000

Page 8: Fine Wines | Skinner Auction 2503

10.Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 1982Pessac Leognan, Cru Classeu: four into neck, two bottom neck“The greatest La Mission Haut Brion made between the 1975 and1989, the 1982 is, stylistically, a dead-ringer for the ethereal 1959.One of the most massive wines of the vintage, it remains anadolescent in terms of evolution, but it can be drunk with greatpleasure if it is decanted 2-3 hours in advance. A thick, unctuously-textured wine with massive richness as well as abundant notes ofblack fruits, truffles, creosote, scorched earth, smoke, and camphor,a colossal mouthfeel, a layered texture, incredible depth of fruit andglycerin, and copious, but well-integrated tannins that are largelyconcealed by the incredible amount of fruit. An old school La Mission,it is a tour de force that should continue to age effortlessly for another40+ years. A monumental wine!” R. Parker, 100 pts., 06/096 bottles$3,500-5,000

11.Chateau Margaux 2000Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck“Bottled in late November, 2002, the 2000 has turned out to be acolossal example of Chateau Margaux that is tasting even better frombottle than it was from cask. Only 40% of the crop made it into this2000 Margaux, a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot.Stylistically, it is somewhat of a hybrid between the succulent, opulent, fleshy 1990, and the more delineated, structured, coolerclimate-tasting 1996. The 2000 possesses a saturated ruby/purplecolor to the rim as well as an extraordinarily promising nose of crèmede cassis intermixed with white flowers, licorice, and hints ofespresso and toasty oak. There is great intensity, compelling purity, amulti-layered, full-bodied palate, and a finish that goes on for nearly70+ seconds. Bottled naturally, with no filtration, it is a monumentalexample of the elegance and power that symbolize this extraordinaryvineyard. A tour de force in winemaking, many of my colleaguespredicted, far earlier than me, that it would be the “wine of thevintage.” It is certainly one of the wines of the vintage, but there isplenty of competition, even at this lofty level of quality. Absolutelyawesome! Anticipated maturity: 2012-2050.” R. Parker, 100 pts.,04/036 bottles$4,250-6,250

12.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck, light bin wear, slight capsule tears to twoR. Parker, 100 pts., 06/096 bottles$4,250-6,250

13.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1986Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: seven bottom neck or better, four very top shoulder, one topshoulder, some with light bin abrasions, one with light capsulenicking, and light capsule corrosion to some“Deep garnet-black colour. An incredible array of aromas on the nose:blackberry, black cherry, tobacco, espresso, leather, black olive andloam. The palate is absolutely seamless from first impression to finish, effortlessly building layers of complexity in the mouth and leading to avery long, earth and spice finish. I can’t see how this could possiblybe improvement so have no alternative but concede perfection. Drinknow to 2045+. Tasted March 2009.” Lisa Perotti-Brown for R. Parker,100 pts., 05/0912 bottles$6,000-8,000

14.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1998Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: all into neck6 bottles$1,200-1,800

Petrus - In the renowned village of Pomerol, pack-leader ChateauPetrus is unassumingly modest. Close by the road, lacking someformal alley, it is easy to overlook when contrasted with somearchitecturally grander neighbors. The robin’s-egg-blue shuttersagainst the limestone creates a hushed and dignified exterior to thechai. Of course the hedonistic treasures crafted within are anythingbut reserved… On average, only about 4,000 cases are made eachvintage. -PhM

15.Chateau Petrus 1959Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnelu: all top shoulder, light wear to capsules4 bottles$7,000-10,000

16.Chateau Petrus 1989Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnelu: one into neck, one bottom neck, different importers“Multi-millionaire collectors will have fun comparing the 1989 and1990 Petrus. The 1989 has a slightly more saturated color, andseems more tightly knit both aromatically and on the palate. However, this is splitting hairs, as this is another stunningly opulent, rich, full-bodied, amazingly concentrated, exotic, flamboyant Petrus thatremains remarkably youthful, and in need of 7-8 more years of bottleage. Additionally, the tannins are slightly more elevated, at least froma tactile impression. However, the 1989 looks to be another 30-yearwine, with extraordinary equilibrium between all of its componentparts. An amazing effort! Last tasted 11/97” R. Parker, 100 pts.,01/982 bottles$3,500-5,000

17.Chateau Petrus 1995Pomerol, Cru Exceptionnelu: all into neck“It is interesting how this wine continues to evolve. Unquestionablyone of the vintage’s superstars, the 1995 Petrus is taking on apersonality similar to the extraordinarily backward, muscular 1975.This is not a Petrus that can be approached in its youth (i.e., theperfect duo of 1989 and 1990). The wine exhibits an opaqueruby/purple color, followed by a knock-out nose of pain grille, jammyblack fruits, and roasted coffee. On the palate, it possesses teeth-staining extract levels, massive body, and rich, sweet black fruitsbuttressed by powerful, noticeable tannin. A formidably endowedwine with layers of extract, this is a huge, tannic, monstrous-sizedPetrus that will require a minimum of 10 years of cellaring. Forget allthe nonsense about Merlot producing sweet, soft, ready to drinkwines, because low yielding, old Merlot vines made in the way ofPetrus and other top Pomerols frequently possess as much agingpotential as any great Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine in the world.Look for the 1995 Petrus to last for 50+ years. Anticipated maturity:2007-2050.” R. Parker, 96 pts., 02/986 bottles$4,750-6,500

From the collection of a Gentleman of Massachusetts, stored in aclimate-controlled cellar, and picked up by Skinner staff.

19.Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse 1990St. Emilion“One of the most singular Bordeaux I have ever tasted, it verges onbeing port-like, but it pulls back because of the extraordinaryminerality and laser-like focus. The wine is massively concentrated, still black/purple-hued to the rim, and offers a nose of incense, blackberries, blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers, and forest floor. Itreveals low acidity and high tannins, which are largely concealed bythe sheer concentration and lavish glycerin the wine possesses.Aging at a glacial pace, it is approachable, but it will not hit its peakuntil 2020; it should last for twenty years thereafter.” R. Parker, 100pts., 06/0911 bottles$5,000-7,000

20.Chateau Cos d’Estournel 1986St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classeu: all bottom neck or better6 bottles$550-800

21.Chateau Lynch Bages 1985Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe2 bottles$200-300

22.Chateau Lynch Bages 1989Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe“Consistently backward and dense, with enormous potential, thisadmirable wine will not be ready for prime time drinking for another 5-7 years. The color is not quite as opaque as the 1990’s, but revealsmore purple and no lightening at the edge. Hugely concentratedflavors have just begun to offer up a nose of cedar and crème decassis. Powerful and muscular, with high tannin and superbconcentration, this is Lynch Bages at its biggest and most beastly. However, everything is in balance for a stunning evolution. Anticipatedmaturity: 2004-2030.” R. Parker, 95 pts., 06/007 bottles$1,000-1,500

23.Chateau Lynch Bages 1990Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe“I have drunk many bottles of this wine in many different locations(Cayman Islands, Shanghai, Bordeaux, Paris, and London), includingbottles from my own cellar, and I continue to be amazed by howremarkably consistent it is. One of my favorite Lynch Bages, the 1990is a more forward, fleshier, and sexier version of the brilliant 1989, andrepresents a poster bottle of what Lynch Bages is all about. A denseruby/purple color is followed by a sumptuously sweet bouquet ofroasted meats, herbs, sweet crème de cassis fruit, a massive level ofglycerin, and silky ripe tannins. It is a hedonistic as well as intellectualturn-on. There is not a hard edge to be found in this delicious 1990,which should last for another 15-20 years in a cold cellar. I wouldrank the 1990 and 1989 as the two greatest Lynch Bages made inthe last 30 years.” R. Parker. 97 pts., 06/093 bottles$450-650

24.Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf 1990St. Emilion6 bottles$1,500-2,200

25.Chateau Troplong Mondot 1989St. EmilionR. Parker, 96 pts., 01/984 bottles$450-650

26.Chateau de Beaucastel, Chateauneuf du Pape 1989Southern RhoneR. Parker, 97 pts., 01/034 bottles$400-600

27.Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape 1990Southern Rhone“Two great back to back vintages are the 1990 and 1989. The moredeveloped 1990 boasts an incredible perfume of hickory wood, coffee, smoked meat, Asian spices, black cherries, and blackberries.Lush, opulent, and full-bodied, it is a fully mature, profoundBeaucastel that will last another 15-20 years.” R. Parker, 96 pts.,01/034 bottles$400-600

28.Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape1995 (2 bts)1998 (5 bts)2000 (4 bts)Southern Rhone11 bottles$600-850

29.Jaboulet, Hermitage La Chapelle 1990Northern Rhoneu: all 3cm or better, one with possible seepage“The 1990 La Chapelle is the sexy and opulent. I had the 1990 at theJaboulet tasting, and again out of a double magnum three monthsago. On both occasions it was spectacular, clearly meriting a three-digit score. The modern day equivalent of the 1961, it deserves all theattention it has garnered.

The color remains an opaque purple, with only a slight pink at theedge. Spectacular aromatics offer up aromas of incense, smoke, blackberry fruit, cassis, barbecue spice, coffee, and a touch ofchocolate. As it sits in the glass, additional nuances of pepper andgrilled steak emerge. There is extraordinary freshness for such amammoth wine in addition to abundant tannin, an amazing 60-second finish, and a level of glycerin and thick, fleshy texture thathave to be tasted to be believed.

Despite its youthfulness, the 1990 La Chapelle is lovely to drink, although it will be even better with another 5-6 years of cellaring; itshould age for 35-40+ years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050” R.Parker, 100 pts., 06/006 bottles$1,500-2,000

31.Domaine de la Romanee Conti, La Tache 2001Cote de Nuits“Strikingly extravagant nose of rose petals, oriental spices, pungenttea and leather notes plus ultra elegant pinot fruit. The powerful, chiseled, pure flavors are remarkably detailed, precise and fine withmind bending complexity yet for all the emotional drama of this wine,it remains understated and almost aloof at the moment. The finish isdense, structured and quite firm though there is nary a hard edge tobe found and while this too cannot rival the other worldly 1999, 2001will one day be thought of as a genuinely excellent vintage for LaTâche. In short, aristocratic in every sense. Drink 2018-36.”Burghound, 96 pts., 01/041 bottle$1,000-1,400

32.Domaine de la Romanee Conti, La Tache 2004Cote de Nuits“This too is sublime in its subtlety and grace with ineffably purearomas and it strikes a balance between the opulence of the RSVand the restraint of the GE with an expressive yet ultra fine nose ofrose petals, violets and seductive spice notes that introduceunbelievably refined flavors that seem crafted from silk and lace, culminating in a linear, mouth coating finish that detonates like abomb and lasts and lasts. At present, this is taut and precise with thelithe muscularity of a world class gymnast yet it is not lean or undulytight as there is a generosity to the mid-palate that serves to bufferthe underlying tannic spine that will permit this to age for decades. This is clearly a great wine that epitomizes the concept of powerwithout weight. Drink 2018+.” Burghound, 95 pts., 01/075 bottles$4,250-5,750

33.Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Romanee St. Vivant 2005Cote de NuitsBanded“This is also very primary and backward as hints of supremely elegantand seductive exceptionally ripe black fruit aromas replete with soy, hoisin, clove and anise nuances merge into wonderfully fine andrefined linear and firmly structured flavors that culminate in a precise, pure and driving finish that goes on and on. This is a really impressiveeffort that offers terrific potential but fans of this wine should note thatit is arguably more masculine than it usually is yet at the same timeutterly seamless. A ‘wow’ wine that is perhaps the ripest of the DRC‘05s. A true knockout that is sheer class. Drink 2023+.” Burghound97 pts., 01/086 bottles (owc)$4,250-6,000

37.Dal Forno Romano Amarone 2001Valpolicella“The 2001 Amarone is on another level entirely. It exudes notablewarmth and ripeness, with profound layers of Venezuelan bitterchocolate, herbs, licorice, smoke, dark fruit and toasted oak. Made inan explosive style, this palate-staining Amarone possessesremarkable detail and nuance for such a big wine. It has beenphenomenal on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. Anticipatedmaturity: 2011-2021.” A. Galloni for R. Parker, 97 pts., 10/076 bottles (oc)$1,200-1,800

38.Gaja Barbaresco 1997Piedmont“Gaja’s 1997 Barbaresco is undoubtedly the finest he has yet made.An exquisite effort, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color in addition toan extraordinary nose of black cherry liqueur, smoke, licorice, mineral, and floral aromas. The wine is full-bodied, opulent, and loaded withfruit. Despite its precocious nature, there is abundant tannin, and thus3-4 years of cellaring is required. It is the most nuanced ofthese single-vineyard offerings, with gorgeous notes of tar, smoke, roses, violets, sweet toasted oak and earthiness that emerge from theglass in a counterpoint of sublime elegance and stunning purity. Itpossesses superb length and elegant, silky tannins to round out thefinish. This extraordinary Sori Tildin will require at least a few years ofbottle age, but it is destined to be one of the vintage’s legendarywines. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.” A. Galloni for R. 48.Chateau Margaux 1982Margaux, 1er Cru Classeu: five into neck, five bottom neck, two very top shoulder, light labelstaining and capsule corrosion, some tissue adhesion“Consistently scoring between 98-100, the superb 1982 Margauxmay be slightly bigger, bolder, and more masculine than vintagesproduced over the last 15-20 years. Its dark plum/purple color isfollowed by notes of melted tar intermixed with sweet cassis andfloral underpinnings. Very full-bodied and dense for a ChateauMargaux, with a slight rusticity to the tannins, it boasts blockbusterpower, richness, and impressive aromatics. It appears set for another30-40 years of life” R. Parker, 98 pts., 06/0912 bottles$6,000-9,000

49.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1955Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: top-high shoulder, slight discoloration to label“The 1955 should be a vintage to buy at auction as I suspect theprice is more reasonable than what such acclaimed vintages as 1959and 1961 fetch. The color reveals no amber or rust, only a slightlightening of intensity at the edge. The nose offers up that explosiveMouton perfume of mint, leather, cassis, black olives, and lead pencil. In the mouth, there is stunning concentration, magnificent extractionof fruit, and plenty of tannin in the long finish. The wine still tastesremarkably young and could easily last another 20-30 years.Amazing!” R. Parker, 97 pts., 10/941 bottle$500-700

51.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: eleven into neck, one bottom neck, some label staining, spottingand damp staining, slight nicks to one capsule“This wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. It has thrown offthe backward, youthful style that existed during its first 25 years oflife, and over the last 4-5 years has developed such secondarynuances as cedar and spice box. The crème de cassis, underlyingfloral note, full-bodied power, extraordinary purity, multilayered texture, and finish of over a minute are a showcase for what this Chateauaccomplished in 1982. The wine is still amazingly youthful, vibrant, and pure. It appears capable of remaining fruity and vibrant in 2082!Thank God it is beginning to budge, as I would like to drink most ofmy supply before I kick the bucket. This is a great, still youthful wine, and, on occasion, one does understand the hierarchy of Bordeauxchateaux when you see the complexity and brilliance of this first-growth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+.” R. Parker, 100 pts.,06/0912 bottles$8,000-12,000

This is not a La Tâchefor the ages as it simply doesn’t have the structure and density toenable it to age for two decades or more but it is remarkably complexand has sneaky finishing intensity. I like this a lot for its superb style, grace and penetrating minerality but those who expect the usual levelof power and structure won’t find it in the 2000. This is actuallyapproachable now though it should age for at least two decadessimply on the incredible balance that it displays. A terrific effort for thevintage but this clearly does not have the freshness and precision ofthe 2001.” Burghound, 94 pts., 01/04

Romane Conti – “Brooding, backward and quite a bit more reservedand less expressive with subtly spicy black fruit aromas trimmed by asubtle hint of oak and followed by restrained, pure, gorgeously sappyand harmonious, completely seductive flavors that offer the bestdelineation of any of these wines. This is extraordinarily fine anddetailed with length that lasts and lasts. Though this will undoubtedlyadd weight and complexity, it will likely always be understated andrefined rather than powerful. This is a simply sublime combination ofspice, silk and velvet delivered in a perfect sphere of impeccablebalance. Incredible by any standard but especially so for the vintageand clearly the best of these 2000s.” Burghound, 95 pts., 01/0412 bottles (owc)$10,000-15,000

55.Chateau Cheval Blanc 1964St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe (A)u: two top shoulder, one top-high shoulder, label staining and bin soilThe 1964 is a wonderfully rich, thick, powerful, and concentratedwine that is the most authoritative Cheval Blanc produced since themonumental wines made by this chateau in 1947, 1948, and 1949.Opaque dark ruby, with only some amber, and a powerful, yetrestrained bouquet of roasted ripe fruit, cedar, herbs, and gravelly, mineral scents, the wine remains amazingly young and tannic, withlayer upon layer of ripe fruit. This is a heavyweight, old-style ChevalBlanc that should be pure nectar for at least another 10-15 years. Itcontinues to evolve at a snail’s pace. Anticipated maturity: now-2010.” R. This huge, massively-endowed wineis packed with alcohol, glycerin, and high tannin. There is stupendousextraction of fruit and amazing length. The only criticism is that it isperhaps too big and robust for its own good. Lucky owners of well-stored bottles are advised to cellar it for a few more years. Inky plum/ruby/purpleto the rim, with a big, sweet nose of melted licorice, smoked meats, blackberries, cassis, and earth, the wine is deep, powerful, full-bodied, with fabulous concentration, purity, and a multi-dimensionalmouthfeel. The wine is aged in both tank (75%) and smalloak barrels (25%). Its inky/purple color is followed by a phenomenalnose of spring flowers, crème de cassis, blackberries, boysenberries, licorice, truffles, and spice. Displaying massive body, incrediblefreshness, laser-like focus from the excellent acids, and a finish thatgoes on well past a minute, this prodigious Chateauneuf du Pape isthe most extraordinary wine yet made at this estate. While accessible(as most 2007s are), ideally it needs 4-5 years of cellaring, andshould keep for three decades.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 10/0912 bottles (owc)$1,500-2,000

Unctuously-textured, with low acidity, high glycerin aswell as alcohol (16+%), and a monster finish, it displays enormousconcentration, silky tannin, and no hard edges. This remarkable,traditionally-styled Chateauneuf du Pape will be drinkable young, yetshould age effortlessly for two decades or more.” R. Parker, (95-98pts.), 02/0612 bottles (owc)$900-1,200

These are monumental wines, and when you think thatthis wine, much like most of its siblings, is made from yields of 12-18hectoliters per hectare, the explanation for its concentration andextraordinary expression of terroir is obvious.” R. 113.Clos des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape 2007Southern Rhone“Paul Avril was a bigger-than-life vigneron, a visionary, and a greatteacher, but Vincent has been in charge for a number of years, andhe has rewarded his father with what I believe is the greatestChateauneuf du Pape made since 1978 and 1990, the 2007. I havenot only tasted this wine at the estate, but I purchased it for my cellar, and have now drunk it on three separate occasions out of bottle. It isunquestionably one of the great Chateauneufs of my lifetime, and Isuspect it will merit a three digit score after another 3-4 years ofcellaring. The blend is generally 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, andthe rest small amounts of Muscardin, Vaccarese, Counoise, andSyrah. It exhibits what is probably the deepest color I have ever seenhere, and the finished alcohol is a high (for Clos des Papes) 15.5%.Still slightly restrained because of its recent bottling, but wow, whatpotential complexity, mind-boggling richness, and compelling flavorprofile are apparent. It is a sublime expression of the art ofwinemaking as evidenced by its dense purple color and big, sweetkiss of kirsch, framboise, blackberries, licorice, roasted herbs, andsmoked meat. It hits the palate with a fascinating combination ofsubstance, power, full-bodied authority yet extraordinary freshness, elegance, and precision. Give it 3-4 years of cellaring, and watch itunleash its glory over the next three decades. This is a prodigiouswine of great quality from one of the most important reference pointestates in Chateauneuf du Pape.” R. Parker, 99+ pts., 10/0912 bottles (owc)$1,200-1,600

Dense purple to the rim, the winedisplays superb concentration, with notes of creosote, blackberry, coffee, pepper, earth, meats, and smoke. A wine of massive intensity, fabulous purity, and a thick, unctuous texture, the tannins do kick inat the end, so this wine will probably require 5-7 years of bottle ageand drink well for close to three decades. The darkest of the three wines, it displays a classicGinestra nose of menthol, pine, underbrush, spices and minerals. This superbly balanced and refined Barolo offers intense dark cherryfruit, with tremendous substance and persistence. Notes of tar andmenthol become more pronounced as the wine sits in the glass. It isperhaps even more impressive than it was when I last tasted it a yearago. A great effort. 129.Bruno Giacosa Faletto Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja 2001Piedmont“The 2001 Barbaresco Riserva Rabaja caps off this magical series of2001 Barbarescos. It could not be more different from the Asili in itsexpression. It is a massively endowed, austere Barbaresco that fullycaptures the essence of the Rabaja vineyard in its explosive, deeplyspiced balsamic nose, layers of sweet dark fruit and big, imposingstructure. After 30 minutes in the glass, this magical wine is stillopening up and my sense is that, even after having tasted this winethree times within the last year, it is still holding back a lot of itsultimate potential. With each successive tasting this wine continues tointegrate its new oak (it was aged in a two-year old 55 hectolitercask). The 2001 is a profound, breathtaking wine, although readersshould note that stylistically it is a fairly contemporary wine from thisestate. The 2001 presents a multitude of aromasand flavors including roses, minerals, smoke, tar and sweet red fruit ina stunning display of sensual elegance. Today it comes across asopen-knit and incredibly expressive. It is hard to say if it will shutdown at some point or continue to offer the broad window ofdrinkability that is the hallmark of many wines from this vineyard.Regardless, it is a great privilege to get a glimpse of this monumentalwine at such an early stage. Cheval Blanc doesn’t scream out for attention, rather it ispassionately pursued by a knowing few. Unquestionalby worthy of“First Growth” stature. In keeping with the Right Bank scene, thebeautiful park-like setting feels surprisingly casual. Formal to a point, but not overly so. Cheval Blanc is comprised of cabernet franc andmerlot. The vinous equivalent of grace and good taste. -PhM

223.Chateau Cheval Blanc 2000St. Emilion, 1er Grand Cru Classe“This closed, backward blend of 53% Merlot and 47% CabernetFranc boasts a saturated purple color along with a reticent butstriking bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, truffles, and mocha. Inspite of its tightness, aeration reveals scents of licorice, menthol, andsaddle leather. Opulent and full-bodied, with low acidity, sweet tannin, and a 60-second finish, it is unquestionably as profound as the 1990and 1982. I still believe the 2000 has the potential to be the mostcompelling Cheval Blanc since the mythical 1947 and 1949, butpatience is required. It should merit a three digit score in 7-10 years, but it is closed at present. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2030+. 232.Chateau Haut Brion 2000Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe“It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with theperfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. 234.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild isunquestionably this renowned estate’s greatest wine. 236.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1998Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“A blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon and 19% Merlot, this winerepresents only 34% of Lafite’s total harvest. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035.”R. 239.Chateau Lafite Rothschild 2000Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“Well, well, well - Lafite Rothschild does it again. Ever since managerCharles Chevalier was transferred from his beloved Sauternesproperty of Rieussec (also owned by the Rothschilds) to Lafite in1994, there has been a succession of profound wines to emergefrom this noble estate. The 2000 Lafite Rothschild, a blend of 93.3%Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.7% Merlot (only 36% of the crop madethe grade) has an opaque ruby/purple color, followed by anextraordinary aromatic expression of liquid minerals/stonesinterwoven with the tell-tale graphite notes, mulberry, black currants, caramel, and tobacco. In the mouth, it is remarkably light on its feet, but somehow seems to pack intense flavors into layer upon layer offruit and richness that cascade over the palate. A compelling wine, with extraordinary precision, great intensity, and a seamlessness inspite of what are obviously elevated levels of tannin, this wine wasprovocatively open and beautiful when tasted in January andFebruary, but I am sure it will soon close down. The finish lasted awhopping 72 seconds! This is utterly fascinating stuff. Anticipatedmaturity: 2011-2050.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 04/032 bottles$3,000-4,000

243.Chateau Latour 2000Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe“There are only 14,000 cases (only 48% of the crop made it into thegrand vin) of the 2000, which flirts with perfection. Truly great stuff, itreveals perfect equilibrium, great finesse, yet colossal size, with athickness and density that rival the brilliant 1996. This saturated blackruby/purple colored wine seems almost discreet on first inspection, but with aeration, notes of vanilla, exceptionally pure, mineral-infusedcrème de cassis, and earth emerge. Full-bodied and tannic, it shouldcome close to representing perfection. Latour’s 2000 is hard tocompare with previous vintages. It obviously does not have theopulence of the 1990 and 1982, yet there is an extraordinary purity, delineation, seamlessness, and freshness to this wine that sets itapart from previous vintages. In any event, it is prodigious, with atleast five decades of evolution ahead of it. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2050.” R. Parker, 98 pts., 04/032 bottles$1,400-1,900

250.Chateau Margaux 1996Margaux, 1er Cru Classe“The 1996 Chateau Margaux, which was bottled in September, 1998,is undoubtedly one of the great classics produced under theMentzelopoulos regime. In many respects, it is the quintessentialChateau Margaux, as well as the paradigm for this estate, combiningmeasured power, extraordinary elegance, and admirable complexity. Itasted the wine on three separate occasions in January, and in short,it’s a beauty! The color is opaque purple. The wine offersextraordinarily pure notes of blackberries, cassis, pain grille, andflowers, gorgeous sweetness, a seamless personality, and full body, with nothing out of place. The final blend (85% Cabernet Sauvignon,10% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) contains ahigh percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. It tastes complete and long, although backward. My instincts suggest this wine will shut down, but at present it is open-knit, tasting like a recently bottled wine. Thefruit is exceptionally sweet and pure, and there are layers of flavor inthe mouth. I do believe this wine will develop an extraordinaryperfume, and possess a high level of richness. 254.Chateau Margaux 2000Margaux, 1er Cru Classe“Bottled in late November, 2002, the 2000 has turned out to be acolossal example of Chateau Margaux that is tasting even better frombottle than it was from cask. Fantastically pure with theclassic spice box, hoisin and soy nose followed by big, rich, verystructured flavors that display notes of earth, leather and tea. Thetannins are big, ripe and are completely buffered by the sap withlength that is simply phenomenal. This remains completely primary incharacter and seems not to have budged at all since it was bottled. Agenuinely great vintage for La Tâche that is softer in the mouth thanthe ‘96 Grands Ech and this should improve for another decade andlast for 50 years. Very classy juice. Note: while it’s happened onlytwice, the ‘96 can be intensely vegetal on the nose and not exhibitthe purity that the wine is justifiably famous for; however, I havetasted so many outstanding bottles of the ‘96 LT that I view thesetwo examples as outliers. It has been at itspeak for nearly 15 years, yet it shows no signs of losing its fruit anddrying out. The color is a dark garnet with orange/amber at the edge. The profound bouquet has the magnetic allure that leaves greatBordeaux unmatched for complexity. Sweet notes of dried fruits, herbs, tobacco, smoke, and roasted meats are followed by anopulently-textured, thick, nearly viscous wine with high glycerin, ripe, jammy fruit, and an intoxicating combination of glycerin, extract, andsuppleness. The wine holds in the glass without cracking up, and hasa good 40-45 second finish. There is no telling how much longer this1961 will retain its magic, but it is still a classic. 348.Chateau La Mission Haut Brion 2005Pessac Leognan“There are slightly more than 5,000 cases of the 2005 La Mission-Haut-Brion, a blend of 69% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and atouch of Cabernet Franc. While there is little difference between LaMission and Haut-Brion’s terroirs (their vineyards are only separatedby a two-lane road), La Mission possesses more fat, texture, andintensity. An enormously endowed wine with huge tannin andstructure, the 2005 offers a quintessential Graves bouquet of burningembers, charcoal, blackberries, truffles, black currants, and a meatycharacter. Reminiscent of the 1989, with more structure as well as alonger window of drinkability, the 2005 may be a modern day, improved version of a vintage such as 1955, which was well-endowed, very tannic, and took a long time to come around. Whilefabulously full-bodied and unctuous, the 2005 will not provide muchcharm in its youth. It needs 8-10 years of cellaring, and should ageeffortlessly for 30-40 years.” R. 349.Chateau Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a JacquesPerrin 2005Southern Rhone“The 2005 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage a JacquesPerrin represents the essence of Beaucastel. A super-concentrated,somewhat over the top style of wine based on 60% Mourvedre, 20%Grenache, and the rest Counoise and Syrah, they only made 4,000bottles in 2005. The wine has an inky blue/purple color, a moredramatic bouquet than the regular cuvee, consisting of asphalt, crushed pepper, fresh red beef, tar, truffle, and loads of blueberry, blackberry, and cassis. The wine is very full-bodied, extraordinarilypowerful, frightfully concentrated, and very tannic and backward.Anticipated maturity: 2015-2050+.” R. Parker, 98+ pts., 10/072 bottles$500-700

It issourced from a vineyard planted in 1920 and is one of the Syrahcuvees in which 100% new oak is utilized (along with Brookman,Hickinbotham, and Piggott Range). It delivers an ethereal bouquet ofsmoky oak, violets, espresso, black pepper, blueberry, and blackberryliqueur. Densely packed and tightly wound, all it needs is time. Thewine is totally harmonious, impeccably balanced, and exceptionallylong. When it fully unwinds, even my high rating will appearconservative. Its only competition comes from the likes of Guigal,Chapoutier, Chave, Krankl, and Ringland.” J. Miller for R. Parker, 99pts., 10/076 bottles$900-1,400

It boasts a sumptuous texture, great delineation, and a huge fragrance of bacon fat, blackberry liqueur, crème decassis, toast, espresso roast, and hints of chocolate as well aspepper. Full-bodied yet remarkably well-delineated and fresh, thisstunning wine is still a baby, but it promises to evolve for two decadesor more.” R. Parker, 100 pts., 10/041 bottle$500-700

A blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the rest Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this enormously-endowed,profoundly rich wine must be tasted to be believed. Opaque purple-colored, it boasts spectacular, soaring aromatics of vanilla, minerals, coffee, blackberries, licorice, and cassis. In the mouth, layer afterlayer unfold powerfully yet gently. Acidity, tannin, and alcohol are well-balanced by the wine’s unreal richness and singular personality. Thefinish exceeds one minute. 356.Levy and McClellan Cabernet Sauvignon 2005Napa“Levy and McClellan’s 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, which spent 26months in new oak (mostly Taransaud), is developing at an incrediblyslow rate. Its opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by beautifularomas of roasted coffee, melted chocolate, crème de cassis, burning embers, camphor, and a hint of cedar. On the palate, thewine combines considerable substance, power, and extract with asense of harmony as well as elegance. Black currant, blackberry, andgamy, meaty notes are also present in this full-bodied effort with anincredibly long finish. The wine is just beginning to shed some tanninand become accessible. 369.Chateau Haut Brion 2000Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe“It will always be tempting to compare the 2000 Haut-Brion with theperfect 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion. La Mission lies just across the road from Haut Brion. Thedescendents of American banker Clarence Dillon now run bothproperties (previously owning just Haut Brion). Given this fact, thereexists an inevitable fixation to contrast the properties. Still, thearrangement between them is not really one of sibling rivalry at all. What is striking is how these wine estates and adjacent vineyardsexist so close to the city center of Bordeaux (4 miles). Mercifully theunusually deep gravel soils so ideal for viticulture were never pavedover! -PhM

371.La Mission Haut Brion 2000Pessac Leognan, Cru Classe“A superstar of this great vintage, the 2000 La Mission Haut-Brion isas profound as the 1989, 1982, and 1975. It is more structured andtannic than the 1989, more civilized and refined, but not as thick asthe 1982, and sweeter as well as purer than the 1975. The 2000 isneither flamboyant nor accessible, but what upside potential itpossesses! In time, one might have to return to the prodigious duo of1959 and 1961 to find a La Mission with this much potential. Whilestill tight from bottling, its inky purple color is accompanied byextravagantly sweet aromas of blackberries, blueberries, toast, scorched earth, coffee, asphalt, graphite, and smoke. Super-intenseand unctuously-textured, with a sumptuous mid-palate and finish, thisis an explosively rich, layered effort that possesses everything I couldever want from a terroir that has given me as much hedonistic andintellectual pleasure as any other wine in the world. It is an amazingachievement for administrator Jean-Bernard Delmas, his son, Jean-Phillipe, and the entire winemaking team. The phenomenal aftertastegoes on for over a minute. Probably capable of rivaling the2000, the uncompromisingly made, formidably powerful, masculine, and highly extracted 2003 has an inky purple color to the rim, a big, deep personality with a tight but promising nose of forest floor, crèmede cassis, smoke, charcoal, licorice, and perhaps even truffle. It islayered, rich, and set for an exceptionally long life, but don’t expect toget a lot of joy even in this somewhat overtly styled vintage for atleast another 7-8 years. Thispowerful, vigorous, immensely impressive, concentrated Latour hasreached its plateau of maturity, where it will remain for another 10-20years.” R. Parker, 96 pts., 06/002 bottles$400-600

This huge wine is, in many ways, just as massive as LeovilleBarton, but it possesses a greater degree of elegance as well asunreal concentration. Classic lead pencil, cassis, kirsch, cedar, andspice characteristics are abundant in both the nose and full-bodiedflavors. The tannins are still there, and, at least from my cellar, this1982 does not appear to have changed much in the last 10-12 years. One wonders how much patience admirers of this brilliant St.-Julienwill continue to exhibit. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2050” R. Parker,95+ pts., 06/092 bottles$600-900

423.Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1982Pauillac, 1er Cru Classeu: four bottom neck, three very top shoulder, two top shoulder, smallcapsule nick to one and slight label discolorationThis wine remains one of the legends of Bordeaux. Pichon Longueville - The visually stunning Pichon Longueville couldserve as the post-card-image one conjures up when imaging achateau in France. A Second Growth for certain, but given Pichon’slofty neighbors, their competitive juices must be constantly flowing. An intriguing aspect with many these older, established estates ishow rigorously they embrace modernity – one could be forgiven forerroneously assuming that time has stopped inside the front door. InPichon’s case, it was the first property to attain the ISO 14001standard in the entire Bordeaux region! -PhM

An inky/purple color isaccompanied by a sumptuous bouquet of apricots, honeysuckle, black raspberries, blackberries, licorice, and a hint of roasted meats. The wood has been soaked up by the wine‚s extraordinaryconcentration. The 2005 exhibits a gorgeous thick-looking,ruby/purple color in addition to a beautiful nose of burning embersinterwoven with crème de cassis, roasted meats, sweet black truffles, and spring flowers. A hint of lead pencil shavings also emerges fromthis cuvee, which seems to want to be both a Pauillac and a ripevintage of La Mission Haut Brion. Full-bodied, dense, pure, andrevealing sweeter tannin than I remember, it can be drunk now, but itwill no doubt display even greater complexity in 10, 20, and 30years.” R. Notes

Page 64: Fine Wines | Skinner Auction 2503

Ullage of wines of vintages fifteen years and younger may be assumed to be of bottom neck or better unless otherwise noted.Similarly, regarding older vintages, lack of notation indicates acceptable and appropriate ullage, clear label and sound cork; potentialbidders must be prepared for reasonable variations in ullage in all vintages older than 15 years. Bidders with specificcondition questions should contact the Fine Wines department. Conditions generally not noted on group lots.

Bordeaux wines are catalogued referencing the 1855 classification. Chateau Petrus cataloguing reflects the practice of granting it 1erCru Classe and other notable Pomerol Chateaux are designated Cru Classe. All Bordeaux wines may assume to be chateau bottledunless otherwise stated.

It is standard practice for Skinner/Lower Falls Wine to open all original wooden cases (owc) for visual inspection. The opening ofbanded cases will be determined on an individual basis.

For Burgundy, German wines and all other more gradually slope-shouldered bottles, the ullage measurement is taken in centimetersfrom cork base, e.g. 3cm, 5cm, 7cm.

Bottle Sizes

bottle (750 ml) jeroboam (4xbt); Burgundy, Champagne half bottle (hbt)magnum (2xbt) jeroboam (6xbt); Bordeaux split (1/4 bottle) Champagnemarie jeanne (3xbt) imperiale (8xbt); Bordeauxdouble magnum (4xbt) methuselah (8xbt); Burgundy

Buyers’ Caution: Levels are as when catalogued; ullage may change due to cork deterioration; other bottle conditions may occurduring storage and shipment. Risk of ullage variation and cork deterioration and/or failure is assumed by the buyer at time of saleand no sale cancellations, price negotiations, or bottle substitutions will be undertaken by either Skinner or Lower Falls Wine.Similarly, no substitutions will be made due to inaccurate descriptions.

Flights of Lots: Are of the same type, vintage and bottle count and follow one after another numerically, though ullage and bottleconditions may vary. The auctioneer may exercise discretion to offer, in consecutive lot order and at that same price, the followinglots in the flight to the first successful bidder of that flight. Subsequently, those lots not purchased will be offered anew and so on.Absentee bids placed on any lot in a flight will be applied to the next lot in the flight (if unsuccessful) until the flight concludes.

Environmental Note: It has only been in the last 15-20 years that the wine industry has moved away from using lead capsules tocover the cork and neck of a bottle. When opening an older wine, if you do have a lead capsule, give consideration as to how youdispose of it.
