Our demonstrator this month will be Tones Briggs. His focus will be Ornaments with Finials but like many long time turners he is sure to pass on a number of useful tips and tricks.

Tones got his start in 1998 after meeting Ted Bartholomew at a Seattle Center woodturning exhibition. “He made hats turned out of wood and I thought that was incredibly clever. So I signed up for one of his workshops.” It’s easy to see how he got hooked on turning.

Other turners have inspired him along the way...Bonnie Klein, Molly Winton, Dick Sing, and Dave Schweitzer among them. “Schweitzer and I got together and turned something every sin-gle Thursday night for years and years.”

One of his signature items is Ornaments with Finials; maple burls globes with long thin finals extending from the top and bottom.

Join us as Tones shows us all how to make this wonderful gift item.

Annual Elections will be held at this months meeting. The nominating committee led by Da-vid Lutrick has put forward the following nominations:

President - Jim Kief Director of Programs - David Lutrick Treasurer - Steven Gary Member at Large - Russ Prior

Nominations will be taken from the floor prior to elections. Floor nominations that have been seconded will run against those above.

Membership Renewal - We are starting membership renewal and hope that the members of Seattle Woodturners plan to renew your membership and continue to support the club. We currently have 179 members. A large amount of the clubs income is from memberships. The dues will remain the same as the last couple years. If you renew your membership today through December 31, 2017 you receive a $5.00 discount off the normal $40.00 membership rate. Renewal cost starting 1/1/2018 will be $40.00. (see page 3 for more details)

December Meeting - This meeting will be the annual Holiday Party; a potluck followed by a Yankee gift exchange. More details will be in the December Newsletter.

President’s Message To start off with this month, I want to remind everyone that Gordon will take your money for the annual renewal of the dues before the end of the year. Renewal is $35.00 by check, cash or on Pay Pal. If you wait un-til after the first of the year it is $40.00. I also want to remind everyone that the fee applies to a whole family, if there is more than one turner in your family.

The club will be voting on the people that have been nominated at the general membership meeting on the 9th of November. David Lutrick

headed up the nominating committee for elections this year. The positions up for election the year are, President, Treasurer, Director of Programs, Member at Large (Position 1). Please remember that our club cannot run on few members for long periods of time. Other club members are needed to step up and donate your time and energy to keep our club moving forward.

The workshops with Eric last month went very well along with the demo at the club meeting.

Ryan is stepped down as the Director of Communications. So our club is looking to fill this very im-portant position. This position takes a lot of computer skills that many people, like myself, are not too sure how to do. We also need someone with a warm place for the 55 gal drum of sealer.

The Bellevue Arts Museum is now showing our club member’s creative side of woodturning October 6th though January 8th of 2018. It is downstairs and you do not need to pay to see the pieces next to the gift shop on the ground floor. More will be said about this at the club meeting.

Our club is also looking for a new location to have workshops and saw dust sessions in January of 2018. If you know of a place that handle this contact Andy Firpo.

Committee members spent hours looking into new Audio/ Visual equipment for the club and are go-ing to let the general membership know how the purchase of this equipment in is going to happen in a timely manner over the next year.

Woodturning: Functional Craft to Decorative Art

October 6, 2017 – January 8, 2018

The Seattle Woodturners and Bellevue Arts Museum are pleased to present Woodturning: Functional Craft to Decorative Art, featuring forty original artworks created by artists from the Seattle Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. The exhibi-tion showcases the variety of items that can be made using a wood lathe.

Informal Reception Recap

A number of club members joined the general public for the Bellevue Arts Museum’s “1st Friday Open House” and informal reception for the Seattle Woodturners Exhibit.

The evening was highlighted by the presentation of a magic wand to BAM’s Head Geek/Wizard, Julia, by Mike Hughes and Tom Johanson.

The opportunity to show some of the great work being produced by club members came about from our continued support of the BAM KIDSfair with our turned tops. Julia has been our liaison and fan for this event since she joined BAM a few years ago.

Donations Several members have donated to the club. We thank those members for their donations.

Many companies in the Seattle area match charitable donations. Some match the time spent on charity work with a generous hourly rate. As you participate in club charitable activities (Bead of Courage, Empty Bowls, Tops for the KIDSfair) and as a club volunteer (Web Site, Audio, Trailer Puller, etc) we encourage you to sub-mit this time so the club has the resources to expose a wider audience to woodturning.

SmileAmazon.com: Shopping at SmileAmazon.com, instead of Amazon.com, gives you the same products and prices. SmileAmazon.com will donate .5% of your qualifying purchases to Seattle Woodturners if you designate our Chapter as your charitable organization.
