Fine Turnings Seattle Chapter, American Association of Woodturners — December 2018
Web: www.seattlewoodturners.org Facebook: seattlewoodturners
This month it’s Christmas Party Time. No demonstrator—we will have a Yankee Gift Exchange. Gifts can be home made or purchased, try to keep the price under $20. If you attend, please bring a pot luck dish to share (no signup, just bring whatever you like!)
New Board Slate Approved—The slate of new board members proposed by the board was approved by the members at the last meeting. Thanks again to the nominating committee (Andy Firpo, Jim Hogg and Tom Johanson) for their work. See the list of board members and volunteers at the end of this newsletter for the complete club leadership/volunteer picture.
New Trailer Parking Spot Still Needed — Please contact Jim Hogg or Russ Prior if you have or know of a place where we can store our trailer. Access to a plug-in to run the low-wattage trailer heater is needed.
January Show and Tell — In January, our president Jim Kief will be discussing/demonstrating finishes for your turned items. In conjunction with this, we’d like the members to bring in ex-amples of finishes they like to use (as well as finishes they DON’T like) for part of the Show and Tell.
Raleigh AAW Symposium Discount — Once again the national AAW is offering discounted registration ($300 instead of the regular $325) for the national convention next July in Ra-leigh. Please let Brian Flippin know if you are interested—note that we need a minimum of 10 club members signed up in order to qualify for the discount.
New Library Additions—We have some new additions to the library coming. If anyone has re-quests for new books or DVDs for 2019, let George or one of the board members know.
January 12th Sawdust Session at Woodcraft—Remember that we are having a special “Beginning Bowls” sawdust session at Woodcraft in January. While all the spots are currently full, we frequently have spac-es open up—so go ahead and sign up for the waitlist using SignupGeni-us. See more details in the Sawdust Session description later in this newsletter.
Demo at Rockler (Northgate store) in February—The national AAW organization is partnering with Rockler and local clubs to hold demo / recruiting events at Rockler stores on Feb 9. We’re looking for a couple folks who would be interested in helping at the Northgate store event.
Eric Lofstrom Demo Piece to be Auctioned—Eric Lofstrom very kindly took the demo piece from the October meeting home and finished it and returned it to the club. We intend to auction it at a future date to raise money for the club. Stay tuned.

President’s Message
In 2018 the club has made an effort to build more engagement with local vendors that support us. We participated in the Wood-craft In-Store event in October and met a number of local woodturners and potential woodturners. In January, Woodcraft is sponsoring a Club Day for Seattle Woodturners where we will be teaching a Basic Bowls class for new turners and talking about the club. We hope you will all stop in to grab a cup of coffee and say hi. On February 9 we will be demonstrating and supporting an event at Rockler Seattle. This is part of coordinated effort between Rockler and national AAW to expose more Rockler customers to the benefits of membership in a local chapter. We hope that by scheduling more events in other loca-tions around the Seattle area (such as the Woodcraft and Rockler stores) we will make the club more accessible to members and potential members who don’t attend because of our Eastside location. The board is also discussing the potential of creating a “virtual meeting” capability that would allow members to participate remotely when they are unable to attend the meetings in Redmond. If you have suggestions about activities we should support in the Seattle area, or are interested in the “virtual meeting” capability, please drop me a note or talk to me at the next meeting. Be sure to check out the chapter Facebook page, and post some pictures of what you are creating this week, shows you attended, ask questions, etc. In addition to help our membership get to know each other better (and to help each other), social media is also an important tool to help the club reach the younger audience that we need to attract in order to continue being a vital resource to current, new and potential woodturners. Viewers are more responsive to a page that has lots of ac-tivity, so your posts are important. Here is a link to the page. Seattle Woodturners has added 32 new members in 2018, let’s make them feel welcome. Many of these new members are new to woodturning and have joined the club to improve their skills. Please take this opportunity to welcome them to the club; offer to share your skills and experience, or just invite a new member to your shop and inspire them with all the beautiful pieces you have created, or just introduce yourself to a new member at the next meeting. We have a “Basic Bowls” Sawdust Session planned for January, but there are only eight spaces available (already filled!), so there are lots of folks out there who could use your help. For new members, a list of Mentors is posted on the chapter website. If you want to contact new members in your area, send an email to Steve Gary, se-attleaawt [email protected], and Steve will send you a list of new members. In addition to your involvement with the Seattle chapter, think about getting involved with other lo-cal chapters and get inspired in 2019: follow our chapter and others on Facebook, attend other chapter meetings as a guest, attend a regional workshop, visit the Oregon Symposium in Albany in March, etc. Bring your enthusiasm back to Seattle Woodturners and let’s make 2019 a special year.

Tools and supplies to bring: 1. Turning tools - bowl gouge, parting tool, and scrapers. 2. Other tools - face shield, dust protection, live center, and spur drive center (if needed). 3. Choices in mounting your blank on the lathe are: a. Chuck - bring jaws, wrenches, spindle adapters (you could be working on a lathe with 1" - 8 or 1 1/4" - 8
spindle threads). Your chuck needs to be compatible with the lathe you are using. b. Faceplate - bring drill, drill bits, and screws. c. Screw chuck—bring a drill and drill bit of the proper size. 4. You need to bring wood to make your bowl(s). If possible bring your blanks prepared for mounting. 5. Contact a board member if you do not have the items above and we will try to help you.

November Meeting John Shrader both educated and entertained us at the November meeting, showing us shop tips for more efficient use of space (in partic-ular, some less-common uses of pegboard) as well as a variety of off-label applications, as shown in the list below. (And check out John’s attire—he acquired a lifetime supply of turning smocks when he hap-pened upon a close-out sale of surgical gowns!)
Thanks to Ross Nooney for the
great job on the pictures.

Lesson imparted: Make sure
friends who may want to get your
attention while you are turning
do NOT choose to turn off the
lights while you are cutting...
Lesson imparted: Celebrate the
design opportunity! Don’t just
patch the hole, accentuate and
embellish it.
Lesson imparted: And if you **almost** go
through the bottom, don’t hesitate to glue
on a matching or contrasting base before
the funnel becomes complete...

Lesson imparted: Keep on turn-
ing! Even if “just one more cut”
gets you into trouble occasionally,
keep on reaching for perfection.

great job on the pictures.

Lesson imparted: Be careful when ex-
tracting your tool from the work. An
excellent example of “only a
woodturner would find fault with this
bowl.” (i.e., there is a tiny imperfec-
tion on the inside rum where Don
nicked it on the way out).

Lesson imparted: When life
gives you a two-part bowl/
hollow form—make wall
sconces!
Heidi Bredehoeft
Lesson imparted: Don’t let a few
cracks (or an incipient funnel) stop
you from finishing a piece!

wood—or a late-breaking feature (pun
intended) - can just be a starting point
for the flow of creative juices.

AAW TIP OF THE WEEK — Understand How UV Light Affects the Woods You Choose
When selecting your wood species and designing the pattern for a bowl-from-a-board or any segmented de-
sign, take special care to understand how the color of the wood will change over time. Although all wood
species are affected by UV light, some are affected by UV light more than others. The striking color contrast
between wood species when the
piece comes off the lathe may disap-
pear in a year or more. The attached
photo shows the color change in
some typical woods after being
placed in direct sunlight for 6 months.
Although this is an extreme test con-
dition, it's representative of what the
wood color will look like in a number
of years. Take special note of the col-
or change in the Padauk sample.
