Maria Barry and Cindy Cerenzie searched the nation for the most unique and charm-
ing holiday decorations, ornaments and table top accessories.
Their newly expanded showroom is set up like a Christmas wonderland featuring trees

and glitter pouring over the tops. The ceiling is adorned with Holiday “bling” strategi-
cally hung adding great detail to the winter wonderland.
“We have added a lovely collection of giftware this year,” adds Maria Barry. “We

“The reaction the holiday décor in our front windows has been tremendous.” says

FINE | F A S H I O N
San Diego, the beach community that usu-
ally exemplifies “casual chic” has recently been
drawn into the style spotlight predominantly due to a fresh
designer who is changing the way the world views San Diego
in the fashion arena.
Gordana Gehlhausen recently gained notoriety as top designer
on “Project Runway”. Hosted by super model Heidi Klum, a
select cast of up and coming fashion designers are selected to
compete to win the title of the “Next Top Designer”. Addition-
ally, at stake for those few who survive until the finale is the
coveted chance to create and show a collection of their work
on a world stage during the annual “Fashion Week” in NYC.
Although this innovative designer did not eventually claim
that crowning title, the international buzz created by this hit
reality show has become synonymous with the imminent fame
of those designers whose fashions are showcased. And, for
those of us who are fashion-forward in the San Diego area, the
entrance of Gordana onto the clothing design stage has been a
fortunate surprise.
Gordana knew at an early age her ambitions were unique
from those around her; that there was so much more to life
than farming with her family in the small village of Padjena,
Yugoslavia. Eventually frustrated by the isolation and single-
mindedness of her home village, her resolute nature started her
on a journey which lead her to the US, and ultimately to down-
town San Diego where her latest boutique ‘GOGA, by Gordana,
at 4th and Market, features one of a kind whimsical gowns as
well as ready to wear separates.
What follows are select questions from our interview and, in
her own words, the revealing and open answers I received.
FINE: How did you become interested in fashion, and
when did you know you wanted to become a designer?
Gordana: “For me, I got into fashion out of necessity. I come
from a very humble background and when I was a child I was
teased a lot about how I was dressed and how I didn’t really
have much. So when I started making my clothes I actually
liked it very much and could be very creative. I never knew
about fashion design school; I got into fashion almost by ac-
cident. I have a Masters in Linguistics and always thought that
I would teach German as a Professor. It took time for me to
realize that designing clothes was my passion.”
FINE: Knowing you create your own distinct lines, could
you describe your specific design style?
Gordana: “I have two lines; ‘GOGA, to Go’, and ‘GOGA Cou-
ture’. ‘GOGA to Go’ is a line that I wanted to give to a woman
to feel comfortable in and maybe a little edgy, appealing to a
woman more in her 30’s up to her 60’s who is professional yet
still wants to be youthful. Then I have the ‘GOGA Couture’
which are gowns crafted from texturized fabrics and silks; obvi-
ously more evening. And, I have been working a lot on Bridal.”
FINE: How do you typically find fresh inspiration for new
collections?
Gordana: “The biggest dilemma for any designer, is to focus
on what aspect they really want to pursue, because you do get
inspired everywhere. So to focus and decide where it is that
you really want to “tune into” is very important. And, for me,
traveling does inspire me a lot! For every collection that I have
made, there was a trip involved.”
article by: Andrene Rene Dziubinsk

F A S H I O N | FINE
FINE: In continuing along that same theme; what was the inspiration behind your current
collection?
Gordana: “My current collection was inspired by my recent trip to China. I was actually most inspired
by the Mongolian influence. So in the Fall of 2010, I used a lot of knits and textures that tribal Mon-
golian people would use: natural fibers, leather, wool, fur - everything was circular in shape.”
FINE: What’s your favorite color & why?
Gordana: “Currently, I love shades of gray. There are so many shades; from charcoal
all the way to blue, and I think that it’s such a noble and elegant color that looks good
on everybody. It’s timeless.”
FINE: If you could work alongside any famous figure who would it be & why?
Gordana: “For me, it would be John Galliano! If I could work with him on just one
collection that would be amazing! His last collection was so inspired; the music, the
hair, the fashions...! There is something about him – every time I see his collection
I’m like “Oh my god!”... it’s almost like I can feel him or something.”
FINE: What’s been the highlight of your career thus far?
Gordana: “The event that I was most excited about was my first boutique. I am
really an example of living the ‘American Dream’. I came to the United States not
speaking English and I never got financial help from anybody. Of course, “Project
Runway” was like the icing on the cake, but doing something through just my own
efforts was really, really amazing for me.”
FINE: What advice would you give to those who are contemplating a career
in the fashion industry?
Gordana: “For me, I feel that I was born with a gift and that if you do that
which you were born to do then that means the gift was given to you from the
universe to use. That’s why I feel confident. I feel that as long as I am creating then
I somehow have the fate that I won’t fail because my gift was given to me to use.
And, if you know what your gift is, and you use it, and you know that gift was given
to you to serve a purpose - then you won’t fail. Take advantage of that! Because,
in the end, if you are given a gift it is up to you to use it.”

WHAT TO BUY?WHAT IS YOUR RECIPIENTS’ PASSION?
What activities do they love? Do they ride horses, follow the latest fashion, or crave the latest in
technology? Do your research first, preferably online, then begin shopping. If they love fashion,
find their favorite designers and/or local stores. Think creatively and outside the box. Is it pos-
sible to have something custom made by that designer? Can you fly the recipient to a shopping
destination to spend the weekend? Focus on whatever they love (or can’t live without), then go
creative with it. If whisking someone away for the weekend isn’t possible, present gifts that are
symbolic to show your thoughtfulness and effort. This thematic approach could consist of a coffee
table book, a fragrance, the hottest shoes or accessory by their favorite designer.
1
Shopping for the perfect gift this Holiday season involves more than hitting your favorite stores and making a purchase. The key to selecting the “perfect” gift is to know your recipient and focus on what they really want. This challenge is easier said than done, however, the following Holiday FINE Checklist will have you shopping like a pro.

CAN YOU TAKE A HINT?
Recall the hints they have been dropping all year long. Take mental notes
of the things they have mentioned they liked or wanted. These hints
could be obvious or subtle, depending on the recipient’s personality.
Bottom line, it’s a win-win situation for both giver and receiver. When you
select a gift they’ve dropped a hint for, they are much happier. It shows
you listened. Nothing like winning points during the holidays for being
attentive and thoughtful!
SEEK HELP, IF POSSIBLE. DON’T GO ABOUT IT ALONE.
Look to specialized sites such as SheWants.com or use professional shop-
pers who eliminate the guessing game from the art (and struggle) of
shopping. Not only are these resources helpful, but they can be essen-
tial in finding the gift your recipient truely desires. SheWants.com is a
custom gift registry that allows you to select the items you want. Not
only does it provide a list for gift-givers to view, it also lists the items
they don’t want. You’d be surprised to learn what your recipients don’t
want. Co-creator, Marie Green, reveals that her mother put knickknack
collector items on her “SheWants Not” list because she hates dusting! To
Marie this was helpful information. She had been buying these items for
her mother year after year! This new way of shopping, via a personalized
registry, will eliminate time, stress and the guessing game.
TAKE YOURSELF OUT OF THE EQUATION.
What I mean by this is, picture the gift recipient “wearing the item” or
“with the item”. Is this the gift they would really want? Does it look like
them? Often times, people purchase an item they think someone will
like because they like it. They often forget to take into consideration the
style, or lifestyle, of the person for whom they are shopping. Is the per-
GO CLICHE, AS LONG AS ITS CLASSIC.
Some things never get old, so when you’ve exhausted all other options,
remember, “diamonds are a girl’s best friend”. A piece of jewelry is al-
ways an appropriate (and appreciated) gift for a woman. Men often love
gadgets. Find the latest and greatest technology driven item and a man
will be on cloud nine. Remember to keep the gift personal. When you
find yourself in a gift giving jam or you don’t know what to purchase,
grab a gift card. Everyone loves the gift of shopping! If you feel it’s too
impersonal, buy a trinket or two they can unwrap with the gift card.
The final rule that reigns supreme can be applied to both giver and re-
ceiver. At the end of the day, it is the thought that counts. Givers, put
some genuine thought into the item you purchase and set aside enough
time to select the right gift for each person on your gift list. Receivers,
be sensitive to the gifts that are given, knowing much time, effort and
money were expended on choosing the gift. Most of all, Happy Shopping
and Happy Holidays!
2
3
son loud and bold? Reserved and quiet? Sporty and energetic? The an-
swers are important because they paint a picture of each person’s needs.
A very bold and confident person might be comfortable in bright colors,
though the gift giver is not. So the moral of this story is, just because
you like something doesn’t mean the receiver will. It’s not about you; it’s
about them. Take your tastes out of the gift selection process and feel
great when giving the gift you know they will truely like.

Most women crave the ability to apply makeup well
and want to change their their routine. It is time to find a
more bold, beautiful look. We have been told to remove
our makeup or tone it down. This season I say, “Try new
techniques and update your look.” Holiday parties are a
great time to change your beauty routine and start flirting
with new trends. With a few quick easy steps you will be
ready to face the season with confidence in your new look.
TRY THESE 7 T IPS FOR SULTRY EYES:1.Dab Mac’s Bare Canvas Paints (my daily must) to the
entire eyelid with a concealer brush (prevents creasing)
2.Apply a dark eye shadow (new fav Mac’s Contrast) on the
lid all the way to the top of the crease (Varies on eye shape.
With your eye open you should see the top of the crease.)
3.Blend the shadow up and fade out from crease to brow
with lightest shade (Mac’s Shroom). Make sure there are no
hard lines between shades. Soft diffusd lines in shadow will
flatter your eyes. Remember, blending is your friend!
4.Be sure to clean under eyes with makeup wipes. This is
extremely essential, as you do not want fallen color from the
eyelid to be worked into your concealer.
5.For maximum POP, use a small angle brush and line the
bottom of the eye with the darkest eyeshadow.
6.Apply mascara. (Never leave home without it!)
7.Finish with an illuminating powder over the entire lid such
as La Mer’s. This will give you a natural glow and enhance
your radiance.
Viola! Now you have a GLAMOROUS new look!

With the holidays upon us, one thing is certain; the whimsy
of indulgence is in the air, and most of us will partake in some
way, whether it’s a frenzied shopping excursion, an extra trip
to the salon or the unavoidable feasting on holiday dishes. With
all of these choices, it’s a wonder any of us can stay on track
when it comes to diet and nutrition.
Surprisingly, studies show the “average” American gains only
one pound during the holiday season. However, the overweight
or obese tend to gain as much as 5 pounds. If you’re follow-
ing a low fat diet, the holiday season can be a difficult, mixed
blessing. Of course, it’s wonderful to be among family and
friends, yet it’s hard to say no to the endless array of tempting
holiday dishes. It seems there are only two choices: one, aban-
don your good intentions and regret it later; or two, abstain
and be miserable. The good news is this: there are ways to side
step these holiday pit falls and make additional choices that
will help balance your diet with little or no weight gain and
energy to spare!
Here are the TOP Holiday Diet Tips to get you through:
1. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise!
If you’re in the first category, like me, and refuse to abstain,
add one thing to your routine to counter-balance those extra -
albeit delicious! - calories: Keep Moving! To remain stress free
and burn extra calories from that piece of cake, that second
glass of eggnog or turkey leg slathered in gravy, keep up your
exercise routine. According to Joseph Greco of Pilates Studio of
San Diego, “Just 30 minutes a day can lead to a healthier heart,
elevated metabolic rate (i.e. less weight gain) and decreased
body fat,” he says. “Get out for a walk, run, bike, surf or swim.
Just keep your body moving during this holiday season.”
2. Strategize! To navigate these food land mines, you need a strategy. Think
of your appetite as an expense account. Determine early in the
day how much you want to “spend” on any number of menu
indulgences. Having a strategy beforehand offers you the confi-
dence to enjoy your favorites stress and pound free!
2. No Skipping Meals!People who skip meals to save on calories end up over eat-
ing when they get to the party. Eat sensible, low fat, high lean
protein meals throughout the day and have a high fiber, high
protein snack (between 100-150 calories) prior to leaving for
the party.
3. Be a food snob. How many of us eat whatever is put out in front of us; either

because we’re chit-chatting, or don’t want to offend the host?
Don’t be afraid to exude a little attitude; if you don’t love it,
don’t eat it. Scope out the food, then save your calorie intake
for the treats you really enjoy - and don’t be afraid to express
this to the host.
4. Skip the appetizers. Many hosts tend to overdo it in this department. Be careful! Ap-
petizers are high in calories. If you need a little nibble, choose
the healthiest options, like veggies, fruit, salsa or a handful of
nuts for an extra boost of vitamins and minerals.
5. Watch the extravagant alcoholic beverages! Talk about hidden calories! Alternate between alcoholic and
nonalcoholic beverages. Alcoholic drinks not only load you
down with extra calories; they lower your tolerance to resist
treats and make it more likely that you’ll overeat. This is akin
to a “calorie hangover!” Choose water or diet drinks, which fill
you up so you’re less likely to overindulge.
Other “extras” to watch include gravy, nuts, cream and sweet-
eners. They promote the dangerous eating habit called “snack-
ing”, where calories are lost and unaccounted for - until they
eventually find their way to your waistline, drain your energy
and make you wish you could have a do-over this holiday
season.
Hopefully, you’re feeling armed with some ammunition to
help you through the next thirty days. If not, here are a
few more TIPS to help you lower the fat in many popular
holiday recipes. Whether cooking yourself or just eating,
these are tips that can be handed down, year after year,
for a slimmer, healthier holiday feast:
Lower the FAT in.....1. Eggnog: Use mostly egg whites or egg substitutes
instead of whole eggs. Use fat-free half and half or
evaporated fat-free milk instead of their whole milk
counterparts. Substitute rum extract for the alcohol
if you want the taste without the effect.
2. Cakes, Muffins and Cookies: Use heart-
healthy canola oil instead of butter, or use ap-
plesauce or mashed bananas if you want to cut
the fat completely. Cookies can typically be
made with half the called-for butter (the tex-
ture is dry if all the fat is cut).
3. Nuts: In moderation, these make a great
snack. True, nuts are high in fat and dense
in calories, but most of the fat is unsatu-
rated and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help protect the
heart. Nuts are also an excellent source of B vitamins, iron, zinc
and potassium.
4. Appetizers: Serve plenty of raw vegetables to accompany
your dips, low-sodium crackers and fresh salsa. When making
your own dips, substitute low-fat or fat-free versions of mayon-
naise, yogurt and sour cream. Garnishes of fresh herbs or fruit
make for nutritional fillers.
5. Meats: Serve lean cuts of meat, such as pork or beef ten-
derloin. If serving ham, trim the fat. With poultry, go for white
meat over dark and skip the skin. And skip all ready-made
meats drenched in sauces. Check with your favorite national
brands to see if they carry a low-sodium version.
Together with a few new tips, we can all make the holidays an
enjoyable, delicious and healthier version of its own self.
Happy Holidays!!

HOLIDAYHOME SALES
Did you know that, statistically, the holiday months
are the best time to buy or sell real estate? Can you
believe that December is actually the fourth highest
closing month of the year? Why?
article by: Lisa Vomero Inouye & Zoraya de la Bastida
Seal that sale or purchase
during the holiday months
with a big red bow.
Because of our incredible weather and sunshine virtually
year round, San Diego is fortunate to have very consistent
monthly home sales. For example, in North County, which
includes Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe and Carmel Valley, there
are an average of 500 home sales every month, month after
month. Specifically, from the San Diego North County 2009
sales data, there were a total of 505 homes sold. Sales volume
for all of the fourth quarter, in North County totaled 1,521,
which averages out to 507 homes per month. In December,
that number peaked to 529 units, representing a 5% increase.
According to the Mike Ferry Organization - the top Real
Estate Coaching Company in North America headquartered in
Las Vegas, here are the the top five reasons why the fourth
quarter is the best time to sell your home:
1. People who are out home shopping during the holidays
are the most motivated, serious buyers as they simply have to
move. In a nutshell, the pressure is on!
2. The fourth quarter typically means there are fewer houses
listed for sale; therefore, there is less inventory supply to
choose from, which can force a higher selling price in the
fourth quarter. This is “supply and demand” at its best!
3. Many people need to buy before the end of the calendar
year for tax or business relocation/job transfer purposes,
which also coincides with the school break for families with
school age children. The mood at home will always be jolly
and festive, but for motivated buyers and sellers, it’s ‘business
as usual’ on the home front.
4. Homes are typically decorated for the holidays, show well
and smell good. At the same time, buyers are more influenced
by those senses and subsequently more emotional during the
holidays to make their home purchase. Who knew that the
‘Season of Giving” also translates into the Season of Buying
and Selling?!
5. During the holidays, more families are together and have
time off to look at properties; while sellers who are listed for
sale in the fourth quarter are ahead of the onslaught of homes
that are listed and hit the market right after New Year’s eve.
These are some good, statistical reasons to prepare your
home not just for holiday guests but for a great sale. Take
advantage of the beauty and merriment of the holidays by
making your home a warm, inviting place that anyone could
imagine living in comfortably. With this kind of attitude and
professional advice, you might just make the sale or purchase
of your dreams.

DOWNTOWNDOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO’s DINING HOT SPOTS
When we moved to San
Diego our dining choices
were Lubach’s, Mr. A’s,
the Grant Grill and
Jack In The Box (for
a different kind of
dining experience),
and long forgotten
restaurants, most of
which no longer exist. The
Chart House was new and helped to launch
the steak and salad bar concept. While working in a
downtown office location I went to restaurants near to the
office, none of which exist any longer. Downtown became a
ghost town in the evenings.
With the ups and downs of the economy over the years all of
the restaurants that carried fond memories suffered and closed.
However, a renaissance in the downtown area started about 25
years ago with the opening of the Horton Plaza Shopping Mall,
the San Diego Convention Center, nearby hotels along with the
construction of thousands of condominiums and apartments.
Sleepy little San Diego, a city near the border, was beginning
to grow up; not just in the population or the height of the
buildings, but with the opening of literally hundreds of dining
venues. The best part is that these restaurants offer more and
better choices of types of cuisine and the numbers made them
better; they had to compete with others serving the same type
of food. While not a dining mecca like San Francisco, our
choices are many and they are good.
Bice Ristorante is a relatively new addition; a reincarnation
of a restaurant that was on top of a shopping mall that no
longer exists. Managing Partner Rinaldo Colantani, of Rome,
and Executive Chef Mario Casineri, of Milan, brought Italian
dining to the downtown area. For years we have gone to
a number of other Italian restaurants on Fifth Avenue (there
must be a half dozen in the same block). However, our new
diningJSix opened at the Hotel Solamar to great acclaim with Executive Chef Deborah Schneider.

favorite is Bice. I went there to
try their food in anticipation of
writing this article. Since then I
have returned with friends. On
one occasion it was with five
friends from Italy. Not only
did they enjoy conversing in
Italian with Rinaldo and Mario
and other members of their staff, but they enjoyed Italian food
outside of Italy. What higher compliment can there be?
Having tried a number of Bice’s dishes (all of which have been
very good), one of my favorites is their Prosciutto di Parma
(an appetizer) innecchiato 24 meri con burrata; a gorgeous
presentation and terrific to eat. Share it with a friend. Their
Ravioli di Manzo alla Massaia con salsa di Funghi Profumati
al Marsala was terrific; homemade ravioli served aldente and
stuffed with braised beef, veal & spinach in a flavorful sauce.
They also have a cheese bar and salumi for appetizers or to
linger over with an after dinner drink. An excellent wine list
helps to complete the dining experience.
Another favorite since soon after it opened in 1999 is Can-
delas. Alberto Mestre decided that San Diego needed a fine
dining Mexican restaurant. He was right. Executive Chef Edu-
ardo Baeza provides sophisticated Mexican cuisine (continen-
tal dining with Mexican ingredients that make it very special).
My friends that have dined at Candelas have thanked me for
the recommendation. The dining experience starts out with
the delivery of fresh baked (in house) rolls to the table. The
rolls with the cheese inside are still my favorite. Each dish is
a flavorful adventure.
JSix opened at the Hotel Solamar to great acclaim with Executive
Chef Deborah Schneider. It was a real night time hot spot with
a line out the door for the bar and a wall of Fez’. It has evolved
under the leadership of Executive Chef Christian Graves, who
brings the slow food movement and fresh ingredients to every
meal. Their lunches are a treat and dinner is not left in the
dust. On a recent visit we enjoyed the hearts of palm salad,
but it was “one-upped” by the grilled asparagus salad. A
terrific tapenade with
fresh focaccia and bread is
served with each meal (a real treat). The chicken
dumplings served with a truffled chicken consommé, baby
carrots, mushrooms, and potato gnocchi was an enjoyable dish.
While not a steak house (The Palm is across the street, and
Morton’s, Ruth’s Chris’ and Donovan’s are nearby), the petite
fillet served with balsamic roasted Portobello mushrooms and
mashed potatoes was tasty and beautifully presented.
One of the newest and much anticipated dining spots in
the downtown area is Searsucker under the direction of Brian
Malakey of Top Chef fame. We enjoyed the appetizers that we
tried, but were disappointed with the sea bass that was very
tough and too small a portion of swordfish bedecked with
too many almonds. We have heard very positive comments
as well as some that were less so from friends that have tried
Searsucker. Hopefully they will improve the dishes coming
out of the kitchen and become more consistent. However, if
you want to carry on a conversation over dinner, this is not
the place.
Some of the other downtown restaurants worth a visit include
Roy’s, Cowboy Star, El Vitral, and Rhama. The number of tour-
ists and downtown residents has made it possible to have a
number of good dining choices in the downtown area.
JSix opened at the Hotel Solamar to great acclaim with Executive Chef
Deborah Schneider.
At Candelas Each dish is a flavorful adventure.
