Market highlights.
Marjorie Merriweather Post, socialite, philanthropist and heiress of Postum Cereal Company (later to become General Foods Corporation), was one of Cartier’s important and enduring US clients and patrons, commissioning some of the most exquisite jewellery sets, fashionable accessories and finely crafted jewelled frames from the 1920s through to the 1960s. Posts’ private collection is on display for the first time, showcasing works from arguably its most creative period and providing perspective on the development and growth of the brand across the 20th century. The exhibition provides a notable
perspective on the life and style of this American icon as well as of Cartier’s most avant-garde designs and jewelled objects d’art.

Natural pearls are beginning to rival diamonds as the fashionista’s choice of gem with necklaces and earrings again reaching record sale prices at premier auction houses. The popularity of pearls with style icons such as Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Middleton and Angelina Jolie is bringing renewed activity and excitement to auctions including the May sale of the largest (33.15-carat) natural saltwater pearl ever to appear at a public auction. A pre-sale estimate of £80,000–£120,000 was eclipsed by vigorous bidding, resulting in a £811,000 sale for British auction house Woolley & Wallis.

Warwick Freeman and Karl Fritsch , two of New Zealand’s most prominent jewellers have curated an exhibition they modestly describe as: “Not a history of New Zealand jewellery, or pronouncement on contemporary making in this country , just what two artists see from their viewpoints (local and international) when they look at adornment in Aotearoa New Zealand”. The Wunderruma collection brings together more than 200 pieces from 75 contemporary New Zealand jewellers and artists, in
addition to Maori taonga, and Pacific and historical European jewellery.

a modern tanzanite and diamond necklace. estimate $12,000 - $15,000
Our first auction curated by the dynamic new jewellery team of Zora Bell Boyd, Peter Downey, Anna Carr and Ruri Rhee held in August 2013, achieved record-breaking sales totalling $800,193 and a 34% increase on average turnover for jewellery compared to 2012. With 10 auctions conducted subsequently and numerous record highlights across the past year, it is expected the August 2014 sale will be no exception.
Offered in our August catalogue is an extensive and exclusive selection of fine jewellery, watches and objects of virtu. Featuring stunning diamond jewellery spanning a variety of periods and styles; the sale includes rings, bracelets, earrings and necklaces in varied carats, clarity and colours and at a range of price points.
Although diamonds may be forever, the sale also offers a raft of exquisite coloured gems, which will dazzle with their brilliance. From emeralds, opals, sapphires and rubies to a selection of more exotic gemstones such as tourmalines, topaz, tanzanite, Jadeite, and kyanite, there are jewels for every occasion and every season in this sale. A highlight for purveyors of precious stones is an exceptional 16.86ct blue/green emerald, which intriguingly has inclusions indicative of Columbian origin.
For admirers of fine crafted time-pieces, the sale includes an interesting collection from the Swiss luxury brand Heuer including a vintage Heuer German Bundeswehr Military “Flyback” chronograph wristwatch with manual wind movement, black face and rotating bezel. Heuer watches from this era embody modernist principals that began in the early 1960s with simple, well-proportioned designs that are at once aesthetically pleasing and functional. For collectors of vintage timepieces, Hodinkee (one of the most widely read wristwatch publications in the world) considers the Heuer Bundeswehr watch an underrated classic and an excellent investment at an affordable entry-level price point.

14 CATALOGUE 385
Starting with modern painting of the 1950s, the catalogue examines: the elementary approach to painting that was at the forefront of image-making in the 1960s; the conceptually ambitious and socially aware practice of the 1970s; large-scale masterpieces by artists who first rose to prominence in the 1980s; and contemporary painting, photography and sculpture from the 1990s to today. Many of the works included in this sale are of a quality that will ensure that they are forever imbedded in the lexicon of the New Zealand art market.
Colin McCahon’s Elias (1959) anchors the catalogue’s suite of paintings from the 1950s. The offering of Elias is extremely significant as, over the last 20 years, only three other text paintings by McCahon have ever been presented to the New Zealand auction market. Also included in the sale is a late-1960s’ landscape by Don Binney which depicts Te Henga on Auckland’s west coast and a group of superb examples of minimalist painting by Ralph Hotere. Works from the 1970s include a large-format work on jute from Colin McCahon’s Jump series and Pat Hanly’s A Young Love (1977), a work from the artist’s Torso series.
The inclusion of the collection of Helene Quilter sees the 1990s extensively surveyed in this catalogue. Included are works by Bill Hammond, Peter Robinson, Séraphine Pick, Tony de Lautour, L. Budd, Michael Stevenson and Julian Dashper. Prior to being presented to the market in this auction, these works had been on long-term loan to Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and, in 1998, the collection was the focus of a major exhibition at the gallery. Before this, they were included in the exhibition A Very Peculiar Practice – Aspects of Recent New Zealand Painting at City Gallery Wellington in 1995.
Contemporary New Zealand practice is also well represented. A number of works by pre-eminent painters are included, such as: Elizabeth Klarer (2013), a portrait by Peter Stichbury of a well-known alien abductee; Shane Cotton’s Broken Prayer (2010), a work
which relates to those that were recently the focus of the artist’s mid-career survey The Hanging Sky; and an untitled painting from 2008 by Rohan Wealleans. The sale also features sculptural works from artists such as Michael Parekowhai and Peter Robinson as well as photographic works by Yvonne Todd, Fiona Pardington, Jae Hoon Lee, Ronnie van Hout and Gavin Hipkins.
This catalogue is a
journey through the
strategies, decisions and
actions that have defined
the historical narrative of
art-making in
New Zealand.

caRe foR JeWeLLeRYTo preserve the beauty
and sparkle of your fine
jewellery, it is important to
understand the individual
needs of each of your
pieces and maintain its
care so it will shine for
years to come.
While diamonds are durable, they can chip. The hardness of a gem is based on a gem trade standard called Mohs scale, developed in the 19th century. The scale rates the hardness of a material out of 10 so a material with a higher number can be abrasive to a material with a lower number. diamonds are rated at the highest level of 10; rubies and sapphires are 9; emeralds and topaz are 8; garnets, tourmalines and quartz are 7. Those materials below 7, including opal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, coral and pearl, can be scratched. Gold, silver and platinum metals are rated at between 2.5 and 4.
These are some simple and easy steps for maintaining your jewellery:- never allow your jewellery to come
into contact with chlorine bleach as it can pit gold alloys. also, chlorine will tarnish silver severely .
- never wear your jewellery while showering or cleaning because gold jewellery will develop a soapy film, which will dull its appearance.
- never expose your gemstones to salt water and harsh chemicals as these will dull and erode your gems.
- never rub gold or silver with anything other than a polishing cloth or piece of felt.
- never clean cultured pearls with chemicals or abrasives as this will damage and scratch the surface of the pearls.
- avoid allowing pearls to come into contact with perfumes, hairspray or cosmetics.
- never wear jewellery to bed or while participating in sport, as this may cause kinking, snagging or breakage.
The following are recommended for the care of your jewellery:
- Clean your diamonds with a mild liquid detergent and a soft brush, or one of the specially designed jewellery cleaners, which are available from your jeweller.
- remove jewellery before using household cleaners as they can contain chemicals which can be harmful to your precious jewellery.
- Have your jeweller restring your pearls once a year, as the strand could be stretched by contact with chemicals such as perfumes and hairspray. ask for the string to be knotted between each pearl and its neighbour; this will prevent the loss of pearls if the string should break.
- Wrap your pearls in tissue paper or place in a cloth bag when storing and keep them in a box away from other jewellery as you don’t want your other jewellery to scratch the pearls.
- Store your jewellery in a jewellery roll when travelling; it will keep the jewellery organised and free from tangles and scratches.
- Make sure you have a detailed insurance valuation for your jewellery. as a rough guide, The description in a professional jewellery valuation will be detailed enough that a jeweller could use it to draw a pretty accurate sketch of the item.
- a professional jeweller should check jewellery for damage or wear, on a regular basis.

the Four C’s
cUT, caraT, cOlOUr, clariTYcuta diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. There are tables of proportion percentages, which are for diamond cutters and graders. diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the mid-range ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.
caratCarat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. one carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Most importantly, two diamonds can be of equal carat weight but their values can differ greatly due to the cut, colour and clarity of each.
colourIdeally, a white diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale ranging from no colour at all (d) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour.
clarityClarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. all diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless and flawless) to I (included); also, grade may indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle or outer edge.
references: de Beers, Harold Weinstein.
What is a diamond?A diamond is a type
of crystallised carbon
formed at extremely
high temperatures and
under immense pressure.
This process, naturally
occurring about 200
kilometres beneath the
earth’s surface, produces
one of the hardest and
most precious of all known
natural substances. No two
diamonds are the same.
A diamond’s worth and
quality are determined by
the Four Cs: a concept first
introduced by De Beers
in 1939.

Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on.

Independent Gemmological reports and valuations:
valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. a valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining.
value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc).
Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

Important Conditions of Sale for Watches:
as many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. all watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.
THe rUle OF ‘caveaT emPTOr’ aPPlies UniversallY TO all aUcTiOns.
Webb’s acts as an agent only and all items are sold at auction together with any relevant reports and valuations. If these differ in any way from other reports or opinions on the same items, this will not be deemed as a reason for the cancellation of a sale.
The rule of ‘Caveat emptor’ applies universally to auctions. The buyer will be assumed to have examined the items and be satisfied about their authenticity and originality. Webb’s endeavours to describe all lots as accurately as possible but makes no guarantee as to the material content of items such as gold, silver, platinum, diamond, sapphire or any other material. By bidding at any of Webb’s auctions, buyers will be deemed to acknowledge this important condition and take full responsibility for their participation in any sale.
