Fringing secured itself on the catwalk as a favourite embellishment for Spring’s fashions. It is interesting to see it translate quite literally into the release of new jewellery collections and it is predicted that this trend will see some fine jewellery examples in the upcoming seasons as a playful edition to traditional haute jewellery collections.

Market highlights.TrendS for 2014 WATCHeS: HermeS – THe fAubourg TimepieCe

TrendS for 2014fASHion fringe

TrendS for 2014 fLorALSWatchmaking is an increasingly important strand of the Hermès business and the French luxury maison has a century’s worth of watch design in the bag. One of the big Montres Hermès stories this year is The Faubourg. This tiny little gem of a timepiece looks set to start a new trend for small watches, last seen in the 1980s.

It goes without saying that it’s not spring without flowers, and the same is true with spring clothing. An endless source of design inspiration, spring’s blossoming flowers best portray the reawakening of nature after winter’s icy reign. And this year, designers dug a little deeper into their creative roots and gave us new visions of the flower with novel interpretations, 3D applications and hand painted patterns. For jewelry, floral motifs are a perennial favorite, so this is an easy trend to re-imagine in precious metal and vibrant colored gemstones. Hermes – The Faubourg.

Jewellery reinterprets a fashion trend seen on the runway as fringes inspire collections from fine jewellery houses including (left to right) Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co.

Spring inspires floral designs in both fashion and jewels with new floral inspired collections. Left to right: Irene Neuwirth, Chanel, Lydia Courteille.

After a line that played with the history of its iconic monogram motif, Louis Vuitton is taking another look into the house archives to create jewelry pieces that mark a new chapter in the brand's history books. With references to the form and studs of the brand's iconic trunks (illustrated right), the lines of these statement pieces evoke the moldings found on the high ceilings of a Haussmannian building, to highlight the shape of a watch case or a precious gem setting. The Emprise line sees the palette of amethysts, smoked quartz and lemon (illustrated left) come to life with yellow gold tassels, in the frame of pendants and delicate drop earrings. The structure of a Louis Vuitton trunk comes together with modern day style, for a timeless line that is pure Paris.

The Boucheron Quatre ring (above) is ten years old this year. This four-in-one ring, designed for men and women, is Boucheron’s homage to its home city: the narrow double rings on one rim represent togetherness and love; the diamonds reflect the City of Light tag; the ring of square ‘nails’ directly references the Clous de Paris street paving, while the grosgrain pattern on the other rim symbolises Paris’ couture heritage. Two ‘Radiant’ editions, in yellow and white gold, have been added this year.

bouCHeron QuATre: Ten yeAr AnniVerSAry reLeASe

The start of the year is a crucial time in the luxury world, as fine jewellery and watch brands unveil their preview collections. Two major events in Europe begin with the finest display from a selection of luxury brands: Firstly, The SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) in Geneva is the first major watch fair of the year, with a focus on brands owned by the Richemont group, such as Cartier, IWC and Ralph Lauren. Second, the haute Paris use Couture Week as a launch pad for a selection of fine jewellery collections. The demand for diamond-set and coloured gemstone designs is undoubtedly driving a new wave of creativity in watch and jewellery design.

ViCToire de CASTeLLAne – ‘AnimALminerALVegeTAbLe’The creative minds behind the world's finest luxury maisons are well known for the work they do for the luxury brands they lead however, their own personal creative practice has always been indicative of the creative force they represent. To observe a person's own creative work develops a sense of trust that resonates through the 'brand work' they do. Victoire de Castellane is the Dior fine jewellery Creative Director and her new exhibition 'animalmineralvegetable'. Renowned for her life-giving ability to reincarnate the natural world as enchanted jewels, de Castellane's

avant-garde use of colour, hyper-hued enamel work and her unorthodox pairing of precious gemstones is once again exercised with light-hearted splendour.

Self-taught, de Castellane began her career as an assistant at Chanel, before Karl Lagerfeld asked her to oversee costume jewellery at the house, where she remained for 14 years. In 1998, Bernard Arnault asked her to envisage Dior Joaillerie where she remains to this day reigning over the Place Vendôme, having been awarded the Légion d'Honneur in 2007 for her sartorial services.

This spectacular one-of-a-kind high jewellery wristwatch by Cartier pays homage to that intensely creative era with an octagonal morganite of 143.99 carats – the undoubted star of the horological show.

Dior’s fine jewellery Creative Director’s latest personal exhibition ‘animalmineralvegetable’ opens at The Gagosian in New York from March 11th – April 5th.

Page 9: Fine Jewellery & Watches

The Webb’s jewellery team presents our first Fine Jewellery and Watches auction for 2014, to be held on Saturday 29 March at 11:00am. This sale features a raft of beautiful antique jewellery, watches of top brands, statement pearls and stunning contemporary jewellery: an eclectic mix curated with luxury in mind.

Both Cartier and Tiffany & Co. are well represented in this offering with varied and plentiful pieces from these heavyweight brands.

There is a strong selection of watches, including a spectacular man’s diamond-and-sapphire-set Piaget white-gold dress watch, circa 1972. Included alongside is a wide and varied collection of Rolexes such as the Daytona cosmograph, a Rose gold and steel Datejust Oyster perpetual, an Air King Oyster movement in stainless steel and a Gold President perpetual. Many other houses such as Omega, Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Patek Philippe and Franck Muller are represented also.

In contemporary jewellery, we are excited to have a collection of the talented jeweller Peter Minturn’s designs; Peter first set up his workshop in Auckland in 1964 after emigrating from England. Peter has made commissioned pieces for the Queen, Princesses Anne and Alexandra, Lord Robens, Michael Caine, Elton John and Frankie Valli. Recently he was commissioned to make a commemorative piece in honour of the late Maori Queen Te Atairangikaahu, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of her succession to the throne. Peter is currently designing, making and teaching from his studio in Kingsland.

The ever-popular Jewels: Buy/Sell/Collect auction will make up a second sale to be held at 3:30pm on Saturday 29 March. Included is an extensive range of vintage, retro and contemporary jewellery. This sale will be a great place for anyone with an interest in good design and jewellery to get their hands on semi-precious loose stones and for those interested in remaking, replacing or reusing diamonds, stones and pieces from items in need of repair.

We are delighted to offer private treaty sales at Webb’s; this service is discreet and all aspects of a private sale are held in the strictest confidence. Enquires from those looking to buy privately are welcomed. Webb’s jewellery and watch specialists will reach out across our extensive network in order to source the loose diamond you are seeking.

masterpiece by Tony Fomison from 1969; a triptych by Jeffrey Harris from his influential mid-1970s period; two paintings of monumental scale by Garth Tapper; and an important work on canvas by Robin White, Bare Hill, Paremata (1969).

We are pleased to offer, for the first time on the market, two panels from Pat Hanly’s eminent 34-piece mural Prelude to a Journey, which was originally commissioned by Auckland Airport in 1977. The majority of the mural has been distributed amongst institutional collections throughout New Zealand and the presence of these two panels in the sale offers a rare prospect for private collectors.

Fronting the contemporary offerings, is Lillian Budd’s (et al.) postmodern masterpiece Modern World; it is a pleasure to be able to present this piece to the market for the first time. A highly influential example of New Zealand installation art, Modern World was a central highlight of the innovative 1992 exhibition Headlands – Thinking Through New Zealand Art, which was curated for the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney. Executed on a more intimate scale, but by no means any less thought-provoking or inspiring, are Ronnie van Hout’s “December 1948” Explaining Painting to Theo Schoon and an untitled taxidermied work by Francis Upritchard from 2001.

An impressive piece from Australian artist Dale Frank, It was sort of a dismal day... (2006), extends the substantial group of contemporary works on offer in the upcoming sale. This is joined by a suite of works by Peter Robinson, an important large-scale painting by Shane Cotton, Kiddy Kiddy, a standout 1987 portrait by Grahame Sydney, Winter Model, and a captivating domestic-scale work by Bill Hammond from his renowned Cave Paintings series. In addition to a superlative range of paintings, the March sale also includes a number of significant sculptural works by Russell Clark, Chris Booth and Paul Dibble.

The modern and contemporary periods are well represented and we are delighted to be able to present five exemplary paintings by Colin McCahon from diverse periods in his career. Included among these works is Kauri Trees, Titirangi, which was painted between 1955 and 1957 and is one of the most well-resolved and formally successful works of McCahon’s Cubist period. The offering also contains a beautiful and rare example from the 1974 Rosegarden series and a seminal work on canvas, Moby Dick is sighted off Muriwai Beach (1972), which articulates McCahon’s environmental concerns and religious convictions with exceptional clarity. These historically important paintings are joined by a large number of significant works including: a

“The Webb’s team has been proud to present our newly designed catalogues and an array of exceptional pieces across all genres of jewellery, enhancing a continued interest and growth in the jewellery auction market over the past year.”

Last year was one of evolution for Webb’s Jewellery department and, having set several substantial records including the highest price for the sale of a loose stone on the New Zealand market and this country’s highest-grossing jewellery sale, the department is planning a range of exciting auction events for 2014.

Along with our Fine Jewellery auctions, we are introducing special sales with calendar events in mind such as the Pre-Valentine’s Day Auction on 8 February and a Mother’s Day Auction. The new

team, Zora Bell Boyd, Anna Carr, Ruri Rhee and Peter Downey, conducted its first auction in August 2013 and achieved record-breaking sales totalling $800,193: a 34% increase on the average turnover for jewellery in the market. The new team offers a blend of expertise that delivers a bespoke and specialist service. Alongside appraisals and valuations, we are delighted to offer private treaty sales for those interested in buying loose diamonds of any size, colour, clarity and cut, outside of the auction calendar. Countless private

transactions have been brokered through Webb’s on behalf of clients and our direct access to an international diamond supply uniquely qualifies Webb’s to facilitate lucrative transactions both on and off the auction floor. There are new marketing channels and fully illustrated catalogues, and photographs of all pieces are now available to be viewed online; these advancements have encouraged an enhanced overall consigning and buying experience.

caRe foR JeWeLLeRYTo preserve the beauty

and sparkle of your fine

jewellery, it is important to

understand the individual

needs of each of your

pieces and maintain its

care so it will shine for

years to come.

While diamonds are durable, they can chip. The hardness of a gem is based on a gem trade standard called Mohs scale, developed in the 19th century. The scale rates the hardness of a material out of 10 so a material with a higher number can be abrasive to a material with a lower number. Diamonds are rated at the highest level of 10; rubies and sapphires are 9; emeralds and topaz are 8; garnets, tourmalines and quartz are 7. Those materials below 7, including opal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, coral and pearl, can be scratched. Gold, silver and platinum metals are rated at between 2.5 and 4.

These are some simple and easy steps for maintaining your jewellery:- Never allow your jewellery to come

into contact with chlorine bleach as it can pit gold alloys. Also, chlorine will tarnish silver severely .

- Never wear your jewellery while showering or cleaning because gold jewellery will develop a soapy film, which will dull its appearance.

- Never expose your gemstones to salt water and harsh chemicals as these will dull and erode your gems.

- Never rub gold or silver with anything other than a polishing cloth or piece of felt.

- Never clean cultured pearls with chemicals or abrasives as this will damage and scratch the surface of the pearls.

- Avoid allowing pearls to come into contact with perfumes, hairspray or cosmetics.

- Never wear jewellery to bed or while participating in sport, as this may cause kinking, snagging or breakage.

The following are recommended for the care of your jewellery:

- Clean your diamonds with a mild liquid detergent and a soft brush, or one of the specially designed jewellery cleaners, which are available from your jeweller.

- Remove jewellery before using household cleaners as they can contain chemicals which can be harmful to your precious jewellery.

- Have your jeweller restring your pearls once a year, as the strand could be stretched by contact with chemicals such as perfumes and hairspray. Ask for the string to be knotted between each pearl and its neighbour; this will prevent the loss of pearls if the string should break.

- Wrap your pearls in tissue paper or place in a cloth bag when storing and keep them in a box away from other jewellery as you don’t want your other jewellery to scratch the pearls.

- Store your jewellery in a jewellery roll when travelling; it will keep the jewellery organised and free from tangles and scratches.

- Make sure you have a detailed insurance valuation for your jewellery. As a rough guide, The description in a professional jewellery valuation will be detailed enough that a jeweller could use it to draw a pretty accurate sketch of the item.

- A professional jeweller should check jewellery for damage or wear, on a regular basis.

the four c’s

CUT, CaraT, ColoUr, ClarITyCutA diamond’s cut grade refers to the quality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdle and pavilion, are arranged with precise mathematical proportions to maximise a diamond’s fire, life and brilliance. The cut, not to be confused with the shape, is the only element of the four Cs to be influenced by the human hand. There are tables of proportion percentages, which are for diamond cutters and graders. Diamond cut grades range from ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, to the mid-range ‘good’ and low-end classifications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.

CaratCarat is the unit of weight for all gemstones. One carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamond measuring 75 points is three-quarters of a carat in weight or 0.75ct. There are five carats in a gram. Carat is a measure of weight, not size. Most importantly, two diamonds can be of equal carat weight but their values can differ greatly due to the cut, colour and clarity of each.

ColourIdeally, a white diamond should have no colour at all – like a drop of spring water. Increasing degrees of body colour are measured on a scale ranging from no colour at all (D) to deeply coloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the range where the diamond’s colour is vivid and rich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. The differences between one shade and the next are very subtle, so grading is carried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample set for comparison and accuracy. Natural diamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’, these stones are extremely rare and valuable. They are graded according to the intensity of their colour.

ClarityClarity refers to the presence of inclusions in a diamond. All diamonds contain imperfections. These are naturally occurring features – wisps of minerals, uncrystallised carbon and tiny fractures – formed deep within the diamond when it was first created. Most inclusions are not visible to the naked eye. The clarity of a diamond is graded by a gemmologist using 10X magnification. Clarity grades range from IF and FL (internally flawless and flawless) to I (included); also, grade may indicate whether the inclusion is near the centre of the stone or along its girdle or outer edge.

What is a diamond?A diamond is a type

of crystallised carbon

formed at extremely

high temperatures and

under immense pressure.

This process, naturally

occurring about 200

kilometres beneath the

earth’s surface, produces

one of the hardest and

most precious of all known

natural substances. No two

iMpoRtant conditions of saLes

Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition times specified in the catalogue. Interested persons including, without limitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, are understood to have examined all lots which they purchase and to accept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer, and not necessarily as they are described in any written material or oral communications. In placing bids, auction participants acknowledge that they have independently inspected and evaluated every lot they are bidding on.

Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations:

Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide an independent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metals comprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitable insurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery. A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculated replacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so that an insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes no provision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtained by individual bargaining.

Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance of experts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in its sole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assist buyers in understanding the methodology and technical details of Gemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants are responsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value of lots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees make no representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuation or certificate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the stated purpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc).

Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted when assessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions given in the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Where an actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed loose to minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.

Important Conditions of Sale for Watches:

As many of the timepieces are old, or their history is unknown, Webb’s offers no guarantee as to the mechanical condition or condition of seals, etc. A timepiece described as ‘fine’ or ‘as new’ is an opinion relating to appearance only. All watches are sold as viewed. It shall be assumed that all buyers have inspected the lots and that they are happy with them in all respects. Watches cannot be returned on the grounds that repairs or service have been carried out, or parts (including straps or bracelets) have been supplied, by anyone other than the named maker. Notwithstanding the foregoing condition, named wristwatches are sold on the basis that the movement (or movement and case where both would normally have been manufactured by the named maker) were manufactured by the named maker. It is recommended that buyers have watches serviced promptly to ensure that damage does not arise from faulty seals or any other aspect of mechanical condition.

5. Payment. Payment for all items purchased is due on the day of sale immediately following completion of the sale.

A. To issue proceeding against the purchaser for damages for breach of contract.

B. To rescind the sale of that or any other lot sold to the purchaser at the same or any other auction.

C. To resell the lot by public or private sale. Any deficiency resulting from such resale, after giving credit to the purchaser for any part payment, together with all costs incurred in connection with the lot shall be paid to Webb’s by the purchaser. Any surplus over the proceeds of sale shall belong to the seller and in this condition the expression ‘proceeds of sale’ shall have the same meaning in relation to a sale by private treaty as it has in relation to a sale by auction.

D. To store the lot whether at Webb’s own premises or elsewhere at the sole expense of the purchaser and to release the lot only after the purchase price has been paid in full plus the accrued cost of removal storage and all other costs connected to the lot.

E. To charge interest on the purchase price at a rate 2% above Webb’s bankers’ then current rate for commercial overdraft facilities, to the extent that the price or any part of it remains unpaid for more than seven days from the date of the sale.

F. To retain possession of that or any other lot purchased by the purchaser at that or any other auction and to release the same only after payment of money due.

G. To apply the proceeds of sale of any lot then or subsequently due to the purchaser towards settlement of money due to Webb’s or its vendor. Webb’s shall be entitled to a possessory lien on any property of the purchaser for any purpose while any monies remain unpaid under this contract.

H. To apply any payment made by the purchaser to Webb’s towards any money owing to Webb’s in respect of any thing whatsoever irrespective of any directive given in respect of, or restriction placed upon, such payment by the purchaser whether expressed or implied.

I. Title and right of disposal of the goods shall not pass to the purchaser until payment has been made in full by cleared funds. Where any lot purchased is held by Webb’s pending i. clearance of funds by the purchaser or ii. completion of payment after receipt of a deposit, the lot will be held by Webb’s as bailee for the vendor, risk and title passing to the purchaser immediately upon notification of clearance of funds or upon completion of purchase. In the event that a lot is lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed before title is transferred to the purchaser, the purchaser shall be entitled to a refund of all monies paid to Webb’s in respect of that lot, but shall not be entitled to any compensation for any consequent losses howsoever arising.

11. Bidders deemed Principals. All bidders shall be held personally and solely liable for all obligations arising from any bid, including both ‘telephone’ and ‘absentee’ bids. Any person wishing to bid as agent for a third party must obtain written authority to do so from Webb’s prior to bidding.

12. ‘subject Bids’. Where the highest bid is below the reserve and the auctioneer declares a sale to be ‘subject to vendor’s consent’ or words to that effect, the highest bid remains binding upon the bidder until the vendor accepts or rejects it. If the bid is accepted there is a contractual obligation upon the bidder to pay for the lot.

13. sales PosT aUCTIon or By PrIVaTe TreaTy. The above conditions shall apply to all buyers of goods from Webb’s irrespective of the circumstances under which the sale is negotiated.
