Fringing secured itself on the catwalkas a favourite embellishment forSpring’s fashions. It is interestingto see it translate quite literallyinto the release of new jewellerycollections and it is predicted thatthis trend will see some ne jewelleryexamples in the upcoming seasonsas a playful edition to traditionalhaute jewellery collections.

MARKET HIGHLIGHTS.TRENDS FOR 2014

 WATCHES: HERMES– THE FAUBOURGTIMEPIECE

TRENDS FOR 2014FASHION FRINGE

TRENDS FOR 2014 FLORALSWatchmaking is anincreasingly important strandof the Hermès business andthe French luxury maison hasa century’s worth of watchdesign in the bag. One of thebig Montres Hermès storiesthis year is The Faubourg. This tiny little gem of atimepiece looks set to start a

new trend for small watches, last seen in the 1980s.

It goes without saying that it’s not spring withoutowers, and the same is true with spring clothing. An endless source of design inspiration, spring’sblossoming owers best portray the reawakeningof nature after winter’s icy reign. And this year, designers dug a little deeper into their creative rootsand gave us new visions of the ower with novel

interpretations, 3D applications and hand paintedpatterns. For jewelry, oral motifs are a perennialfavorite, so this is an easy trend to re-imagine inprecious metal and vibrant colored gemstones.Hermes – The Faubourg.

Jewellery reinterprets a fashion trend seen on the runway as fringes inspire collections from ne jewellery housesincluding (left to right) Van Cleef & Arpels, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co.

Spring inspiresoral designs inboth fashion and jewels with neworal inspired

collections.Left to right:Irene Neuwirth,Chanel, LydiaCourteille.

After a line that played with the history of its iconicmonogram motif, Louis Vuitton is taking another

look into the house archives to create jewelrypieces that mark a new chapter in the brand'shistory books. With references to the form andstuds of the brand's iconic trunks (illustratedright), the lines of these statement piecesevoke the moldings found on the high ceilingsof a Haussmannian building, to highlight theshape of a watch case or a precious gemsetting. The Emprise line sees the paletteof amethysts, smoked quartz and lemon(illustrated left) come to life with yellow goldtassels, in the frame of pendants and delicate dropearrings. The structure of a Louis Vuitton trunk comes together

with modern day style, for a timeless line that is pure Paris.

The Boucheron Quatre ring (above) is tenyears old this year. This four-in-one ring, designed for men and women, is Boucheron’shomage to its home city: the narrow doublerings on one rim represent togethernessand love; the diamonds reect the City ofLight tag; the ring of square ‘nails’ directlyreferences the Clous de Paris street paving, while the grosgrain pattern on the otherrim symbolises Paris’ couture heritage.

Two ‘Radiant’ editions, in yellow andwhite gold, have been added this year.

BOUCHERON QUATRE: TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY RELEASE

The start of the year is a crucial time in theluxury world, as ne jewellery and watchbrands unveil their preview collections. Twomajor events in Europe begin with the nestdisplay from a selection of luxury brands:Firstly, The SIHH (Salon International de laHaute Horlogerie) in Geneva is the rst majorwatch fair of the year, with a focus on brandsowned by the Richemont group, such asCartier, IWC and Ralph Lauren. Second, thehaute Paris use Couture Week as a launch padfor a selection of ne jewellery collections. The demand for diamond-set and colouredgemstone designs is undoubtedly driving a newwave of creativity in watch and jewellery design.

SIHH 2014 & PARISCOUTURE WEEK

 VICTOIRE DE CASTELLANE– ‘ ANIMALMINERALVEGETABLE’

The creative minds behind theworld's nest luxury maisonsare well known for the work theydo for the luxury brands they

lead however, their own personalcreative practice has always beenindicative of the creative force theyrepresent. To observe a person'sown creative work develops asense of trust that resonatesthrough the 'brand work' theydo. Victoire de Castellane isthe Dior ne jewellery CreativeDirector and her new exhibition'animalmineralvegetable'.Renowned for her life-giving abilityto reincarnate the natural world as

enchanted jewels, de Castellane's

avant-garde use of colour,hyper-hued enamel work and herunorthodox pairing of preciousgemstones is once again exercised

with light-hearted splendour.

Self-taught, de Castellane beganher career as an assistant atChanel, before Karl Lagerfeldasked her to oversee costume

jewellery at the house, whereshe remained for 14 years. In1998, Bernard Arnault asked her toenvisage Dior Joaillerie where sheremains to this day reigning overthe Place Vendôme, having beenawarded the Légion d'Honneur in

2007 for her sartorial services.

This spectacular one-of-a-kind high jewellery wristwatch by Cartierpays homage to that intensely creative era with an octagonal morganite

of 143.99 carats – the undoubted star of the horological show.

“The Webb’s team has been proud to present our newlydesigned catalogues and an array of exceptional pieces acrossall genres of jewellery, enhancing a continued interest and

growth in the jewellery auction market over the past year.”

Last year was one of evolution for Webb’s

Jewellery department and, having set

several substantial records including

the highest price for the sale of a loose

stone on the New Zealand market and this

country’s highest-grossing jewellery sale,

the department is planning a rangeof exciting auction events for 2014.

Along with our Fine Jewellery auctions,

we are introducing special sales with

calendar events in mind such as the

Pre-Valentine’s Day Auction on 8 February

and a Mother’s Day Auction. The new

team, Zora Bell Boyd, Anna Carr, Ruri

Rhee and Peter Downey, conducted its

rst auction in August 2013 and achieved

record-breaking sales totalling $800,193:

a 34% increase on the average turnover

for jewellery in the market. The new team

offers a blend of expertise that delivers abespoke and specialist service. Alongside

appraisals and valuations, we are

delighted to offer private treaty sales for

those interested in buying loose diamonds

of any size, colour, clarity and cut, outside

of the auction calendar. Countless private

transactions have been brokered through

Webb’s on behalf of clients and our direct

access to an international diamond supply

uniquely qualies Webb’s to facilitate

lucrative transactions both on and off the

auction oor. There are new marketing

channels and fully illustrated catalogues, and photographs of all pieces are now

available to be viewed online; these

advancements have encouraged

an enhanced overall consigning and

buying experience.

FINE JEWELLERY & WATCHES

92 CATALOGUE 357

CARE FORJEWELLERY To preserve the beauty

and sparkle of your ne jewellery, it is important to

understand the individual

needs of each of your

pieces and maintain its

care so it will shine for

years to come.

While diamonds are durable, theycan chip. The hardness of a gem isbased on a gem trade standard called

Mohs scale, developed in the 19thcentury. The scale rates the hardnessof a material out of 10 so a materialwith a higher number can be abrasiveto a material with a lower number.Diamonds are rated at the highestlevel of 10; rubies and sapphires are9; emeralds and topaz are 8; garnets, tourmalines and quartz are 7. Thosematerials below 7, including opal, turquoise, lapis lazuli, coral and pearl, can be scratched. Gold, silver andplatinum metals are rated at between

2.5 and 4.

These are some simple and easy stepsfor maintaining your jewellery:

- Never allow your jewellery to comeinto contact with chlorine bleach as itcan pit gold alloys. Also, chlorine willtarnish silver severely .

- Never wear your jewellery whileshowering or cleaning because gold

jewellery will develop a soapy lm,which will dull its appearance.

- Never expose your gemstones to salt

water and harsh chemicals as thesewill dull and erode your gems.

- Never rub gold or silver with anythingother than a polishing cloth or pieceof felt.

- Never clean cultured pearls withchemicals or abrasives as this willdamage and scratch the surface ofthe pearls.

- Avoid allowing pearls to come intocontact with perfumes, hairspray orcosmetics.

- Never wear jewellery to bed or whileparticipating in sport, as this maycause kinking, snagging or breakage.

The following are recommended forthe care of your jewellery:

- Clean your diamonds with a mildliquid detergent and a soft brush,or one of the specially designed

jewellery cleaners, which are availablefrom your jeweller.

- Remove jewellery before usinghousehold cleaners as they cancontain chemicals which can beharmful to your precious jewellery.

- Have your jeweller restring your pearls

once a year, as the strand could bestretched by contact with chemicalssuch as perfumes and hairspray. Askfor the string to be knotted betweeneach pearl and its neighbour; this willprevent the loss of pearls if the stringshould break.

- Wrap your pearls in tissue paper orplace in a cloth bag when storing andkeep them in a box away from other

jewellery as you don’t want your other jewellery to scratch the pearls.

- Store your jewellery in a jewelleryroll when travelling; it will keep the

jewellery organised and free fromtangles and scratches.

- Make sure you have a detailedinsurance valuation for your jewellery. As a rough guide, The description in aprofessional jewellery valuation willbe detailed enough that a jewellercould use it to draw a pretty accuratesketch of the item.

- A professional jeweller should check jewellery for damage or wear, on a

regular basis.

93CATALOGUE 357

The Four C’s

CUT, CARAT, COLOUR, CLARITYCut

A diamond’s cut grade refers to thequality of the tiny surfaces, or facets, polished onto its surface. The facets, known as the crown, culet, table, girdleand pavilion, are arranged with precisemathematical proportions to maximisea diamond’s re, life and brilliance. Thecut, not to be confused with the shape,is the only element of the four Cs to beinuenced by the human hand. Thereare tables of proportion percentages,

which are for diamond cutters andgraders. Diamond cut grades rangefrom ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’, tothe mid-range ‘good’ and low-endclassications of ‘fair’ and ‘poor’.

Carat

Carat is the unit of weight for allgemstones. One carat is subdividedinto 100 ‘points’. Therefore, a diamondmeasuring 75 points is three-quartersof a carat in weight or 0.75ct. Thereare ve carats in a gram. Carat is a

measure of weight, not size. Mostimportantly, two diamonds can be ofequal carat weight but their values candiffer greatly due to the cut, colour andclarity of each.

Colour

Ideally, a white diamond should haveno colour at all – like a drop of springwater. Increasing degrees of bodycolour are measured on a scale rangingfrom no colour at all (D) to deeplycoloured (Z). Beyond ‘Z’ is the rangewhere the diamond’s colour is vivid andrich; these are called ‘fancy colours’. Thedifferences between one shade andthe next are very subtle, so grading iscarried out under controlled lighting, using a master diamond sample setfor comparison and accuracy. Naturaldiamonds also occur in shades of blue, green, yellow-orange, pink, red and

even black. Known as ‘coloured fancies’,these stones are extremely rare andvaluable. They are graded according tothe intensity of their colour.

Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence ofinclusions in a diamond. All diamondscontain imperfections. These arenaturally occurring features – wispsof minerals, uncrystallised carbon andtiny fractures – formed deep withinthe diamond when it was rst created. Most inclusions are not visible to thenaked eye. The clarity of a diamond isgraded by a gemmologist using 10Xmagnication. Clarity grades rangefrom IF and FL (internally awless andawless) to I (included); also, grademay indicate whether the inclusion isnear the centre of the stone or along itsgirdle or outer edge.

References: De Beers, Harold Weinstein.

WHAT IS ADIAMOND?A diamond is a type

of crystallised carbon

formed at extremely

high temperatures and

under immense pressure.

This process, naturally

occurring about 200

kilometres beneath the

earth’s surface, produces

one of the hardest and

most precious of all known

natural substances. No two

diamonds are the same.

A diamond’s worth and

quality are determined by

the Four Cs: a concept rst

introduced by De Beersin 1939.

IMPORTANT CONDITIONS OF SALES

Before the sale, all lots may be examined at the exhibition timesspecied in the catalogue. Interested persons including, withoutlimitation, bidder’s representatives and auction agents, areunderstood to have examined all lots which they purchase and toaccept their condition as they are at the moment of the fall of the

FINE JEWELLERY

Independent Gemmological Reports and Valuations:

Valuations are made available to Webb’s customers to provide anindependent opinion as to the quality of the stones and metalscomprising a piece, and so that buyers can obtain suitableinsurance cover immediately upon purchase and prior to delivery.A valuation for insurance purposes represents a calculatedreplacement cost allowing for maximum retail margins, so thatan insurer can assess the outer limit of their exposure to risk. It

does not represent actual new retail replacement, as it makes noprovision for competitive trade practice, or for discounts obtainedby individual bargaining.

Value estimates have been arrived at with the assistance ofexperts, tests and other methods which Webb’s has deemed in itssole discretion to be appropriate. Whilst Webb’s staff will assistbuyers in understanding the methodology and technical details ofGemmological reports and valuations, all auction participants areresponsible for reaching their own conclusions as to the value oflots prior to bidding. Webb’s, its consultants and employees makeno representation or warranty regarding any opinion, valuationor certicate of any item on offer. Buyers should note the statedpurpose of the valuation (insurance, retail market, cash value, estate division etc).

Unless otherwise stated, all stones have been mounted whenassessed for weight, colour or clarity, and the descriptions givenin the catalogue or report are therefore limited in accuracy. Wherean actual weight is given, the stone will have been weighed looseto minimise error margins. Nonetheless, the buyer accepts that all

reports and descriptions remain opinions and not matters of fact.
